Tracking problems point you toward the sensor, mouse surface, or wireless conditions; a mouse that vanishes or reconnects calls for checks of power, receiver placement, cable, and USB connection. Work through the steps below in order, stopping when the problem clears.
1. Check power and basic tracking
- For a wireless mouse: Recharge it or replace its batteries before testing further. Low power can complicate diagnosis.
- If the cursor skips but the mouse stays connected: Temporarily lower sensitivity using the control in the mouse maker’s software, if available. Logitech also recommends surface tuning on supported gaming mice; use the instructions for your model in Logitech’s tracking troubleshooting guide.
2. Clean the sensor and try another surface
Dust on the sensor or an unsuitable tracking surface can cause erratic cursor movement. SteelSeries recommends updating firmware on devices managed through GG, then cleaning the sensor with compressed air if the issue remains. Follow your mouse maker’s instructions for the exact model.

SteelSeries Support warns: “We do not recommend using a liquid cleaner to clean the surface of the sensor as it can result in permanent damage.” Avoid spraying liquid onto or into the sensor. Try the mouse on a different surface: SteelSeries suggests a single-color matte surface for optical mice, and a matte or glossy dark surface for laser mice. Charge the mouse, then move its receiver closer and reduce possible radio interference. Logitech’s guidance is to keep the receiver within 20 cm of the mouse and the mouse and receiver at least 2 m from wireless routers and other 2.4 GHz devices. These are Logitech’s placement recommendations, not universal guarantees for every mouse. You can also temporarily disconnect other wireless devices to see whether tracking changes. For Razer HyperPolling wireless operation specifically, Razer recommends keeping the dongle in line of sight and within 30 cm, and away from active USB 3 hubs. For wired HyperPolling operation, it recommends connecting directly to a native USB port. These instructions apply to HyperPolling setups; consult Razer’s HyperPolling guidance rather than treating them as universal settings.
4. For wired disconnects, isolate the USB connection
- Connect the mouse to another USB port, directly on the computer if possible; bypass a hub during the test.
- If it is connected to USB 3.0, try a USB 2.0 port if one is available.
- Test the mouse on another computer, if possible. This helps distinguish a problem with the mouse or cable from one involving the original computer.
- If the problem continues, check whether USB Selective Suspend is enabled and disable it temporarily as a diagnostic. The exact setting path depends on your operating system and version.

5. Lower polling rate when mouse use coincides with FPS drops
Polling rate, also called report rate, is how often the mouse sends its position to the computer. If the cursor still tracks but game performance drops when you move the mouse, lower the report rate in the mouse software and test again. Logitech says rates above 1 kHz can cause FPS drops for some users because of added USB traffic; it also recommends testing another game. This is a possible performance issue, not a general explanation for every stutter or disconnect. Details are in Logitech’s report-rate guidance.

For Razer HyperPolling, the maximum discussed is 8,000 reports per second, and Razer notes that some PCs may not have enough resources to process that rate. If you use HyperPolling, try a lower rate to see whether performance improves; do not assume the highest setting is best for every system.

6. Decide whether the problem follows the mouse
If the mouse works reliably on another computer, focus on the original computer’s USB connection, power settings, software, or game. If it fails across different ports and another computer, check the current support and warranty options for the specific model. Coverage and repair steps vary by manufacturer and product, so confirm them with the maker rather than assuming a universal failure threshold.
Firmware steps are model-specific. Logitech notes that its Firmware Update Tool is no longer supported or maintained, so do not use that obsolete utility; check the current support page for your mouse instead.
