If your foldable phone resists opening, stop rather than forcing it; if its inner screen flickers, shows lines, or develops a green tint, check the model-specific software guidance and arrange service if the problem persists. A crease—and, on some Motorola Razr models, slight waviness or faint movement noise—can be normal. Those traits do not make new hinge resistance or display flicker normal.
What to do first if your foldable will not open normally
Stop at resistance or visible damage
Do not push the phone flat against resistance, bend it backward, squeeze the hinge, press hard on the center fold, or try to lift the inner display. Do not put a pin, brush, compressed-air nozzle, or other object into the hinge. Motorola’s guidance for Razr devices says, “Don’t open the phone farther than the hinge allows” (Motorola Razr care). Its 2026 Razr Fold guide also cautions against excessive force on the middle of the display and warns that objects such as cards, coins, keys, or debris can damage the screen or interfere with hinge operation (Razr Fold 2026 user guide).

If the phone has a crack, a separated screen layer, debris visibly trapped inside, or a recent drop or liquid exposure, stop handling the hinge and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. A symptom alone cannot identify which component has failed.

Look for an obvious item caught between the phone’s halves, but do not probe into the hinge or try to dislodge anything from inside it. Remove an external case only if it comes off easily and is not attached to the inner display. Avoid adding a third-party protector to the foldable inner screen unless the exact manufacturer guidance for your model permits it.

Protector instructions differ by device. Motorola’s general Razr care guidance says not to use a screen protector on the internal display; its Razr Fold 2026 guide discusses the factory protector and directs owners to approved service if it is damaged. Follow the instructions for your exact model rather than applying advice for another Razr generation.
How to troubleshoot a flickering foldable screen
For Google Pixel Fold and other Pixel phones
Google says flicker, a green tint, or horizontal or vertical lines may indicate a hardware issue. Its recommended first step is to check for a system update at Settings → System → System update and install any available update. If the display problem remains, Google directs owners to contact support or arrange repair (Google Pixel screen appearance troubleshooting).

That menu path is Pixel-specific; do not assume it applies to Samsung, Motorola, or another brand. Google’s separate touch-response guidance covers checking for obstructions and cleanliness, and points appearance problems such as flicker to its screen-appearance guidance (Google Pixel touchscreen troubleshooting).

For other brands
Use the support instructions for the exact make and model. The guidance here does not establish a Samsung-specific troubleshooting sequence or a universal software fix for foldables. If flickering continues, or the display shows lines, a green tint, dead pixels, or cracking, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider instead of pressing the screen or trying a generic hinge fix.

Is a crease or hinge noise normal?
A visible crease is a characteristic of foldable displays and is not, by itself, proof of a defect. Motorola says a slight wave or uneven feel at the fold and sounds associated with hinge or display movement can be normal on certain Razr devices. Its Razr Fold 2026 guide says, “The crease at the bend on the main display and the faint noise you may hear while flipping open the phone are part of the design and do not impact product durability.”
Those statements apply to the Motorola models described in the relevant guidance; they do not establish a normal flatness tolerance for every foldable phone. A crease or faint movement noise is different from new, pronounced resistance, a phone that no longer opens as designed, flickering, lines, dead pixels, or visible damage. Treat those symptoms as reasons to seek model-specific support.

When to contact support or arrange repair
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if the hinge will not open normally, the display flicker persists after the applicable software check, or the screen has lines, a green tint, dead pixels, cracks, or new deformation. Google directs owners with unresolved appearance problems to support or repair; Motorola separates software issues, hardware faults, and physical or liquid damage in its troubleshooting and repair guidance (Motorola repair and warranty guidance).

If the device is still usable, back up important data before service. Check the warranty and repair options for your exact model and country: coverage and eligibility vary, and damage from an accident or an attempted repair may affect coverage. Do not assume a repair will be free; request a current, device-specific diagnosis and quote.
Check before considering DIY repair
Motorola says repair kits containing genuine parts and tools are available for selected devices through iFixit, but availability and difficulty vary by model and damage. Motorola advises limiting DIY repair to out-of-warranty devices because repair damage may affect standard warranty. That does not establish that a kit is available for your phone or that it fixes a hinge or flexible inner display. Before buying parts, confirm model compatibility, repair documentation, warranty status, and the availability of the specific part. For a hinge or inner-display fault, professional diagnosis is the safer starting point.

How to reduce avoidable hinge and display damage
- Keep dust and loose debris away from the hinge area. Motorola warns that dust exposure can reduce hinge life and damage the display (Razr Fold 2026 user guide).
- Do not insert a tool or direct a compressed-air nozzle into the hinge. An external wipe with a dry cloth is care, not a way to repair debris trapped inside or a faulty mechanism.
- Use only the inner-screen protector specified or approved for your exact model; do not peel or lift a factory protector yourself.
- Open and close the phone within the range allowed by its hinge, without pressing hard on the fold.
