How to Fix a FiveM Server That Won’t Start: A Layer-by-Layer Diagnostic Guide

Fix a FiveM server by finding the first meaningful startup error, then testing each layer separately: FXServer and txAdmin, the artifact and operating system, server.cfg, resources, recipes and databases, and finally network reachability. Start FXServer without a +exec server.cfg argument to test txAdmin on its own, use the recommended complete artifact for your platform, and treat ports 30120 and 40120 as different services. A working panel does not prove that players can reach the game server.

Start with the first failure, not the last symptom

Repeated restarts can bury the useful message under several pages of later errors. Stop the server, then read the FXServer console or txAdmin Live Console from the beginning of that startup attempt. Record the first line that indicates a failure, the resource or task named beside it, and whether the process exits or continues running.

The first error usually identifies the layer that needs repair. A later message such as “resource failed to start” can be a consequence of an earlier missing dependency, invalid configuration line or failed database task.

Know which startup layer is failing

FiveM startup is not one operation. Use the symptom to choose the smallest test that can confirm or eliminate a layer.

Step 1: Test txAdmin separately from the game server

txAdmin is bundled with FXServer and provides a useful diagnostic boundary. A panel that cannot start points to a runtime, extraction or listener problem; a panel that starts but cannot launch the configured server points farther up the stack, usually at configuration, resources or a recipe.

1. Stop every existing FXServer process so an old instance cannot hold a port.
2. Start FXServer without a +exec server.cfg argument. This puts it into txAdmin monitor mode instead of immediately loading your game configuration.
3. Watch the console for the panel address and listener errors. The typical txAdmin panel port is TCP 40120.
4. Open the displayed panel address locally on the host. If it does not appear, inspect the artifact extraction, operating-system platform and whether another process already owns the listener port.
5. Only after the panel is available, use its configuration flow or CFG editor to launch the game server.

Keep txAdmin panel settings in txAdmin itself or in the documented TXHOST_* environment variables. Do not mix panel settings into game endpoint lines in server.cfg; those are separate configuration domains.

The official txAdmin repository describes the software as being used by more than 27,000 servers. That is a repository-stated adoption figure, not an independent market census, but it explains why txAdmin is the normal first boundary for diagnosing an FXServer installation.

Step 2: Confirm the artifact and platform prerequisites

Configuration debugging is wasted effort if the executable or its runtime prerequisites are incomplete. Download the recommended build for the operating system you are actually running and extract the complete archive into a clean server directory. Partial extraction, nested folders created by an archive tool or mixing files from different builds can make FXServer close before it reaches txAdmin.

Use the recommended build for the correct platform

• Choose the artifact marked recommended for your platform rather than combining binaries from another operating system.
• Extract all files and preserve the directory structure. If in doubt, extract to a new empty folder instead of overwriting an older installation.
• Do not copy only the executable; supporting files in the artifact are part of the installation.
• After extraction, launch the fresh copy without +exec to determine whether txAdmin can start before you restore configuration.

Windows requirement for GTAV Enhanced

For GTAV Enhanced on Windows, install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable before treating an immediate exit as a configuration failure. Restart the launch test after installation. If the process still closes, return to the first console error rather than adding resources or changing ports.

Rule out a listener conflict

If txAdmin reports that its listener cannot bind, another process may already be using the panel port. Stop the older FXServer instance or change the panel setting through txAdmin or the appropriate TXHOST_* environment variable. Keep the game endpoint and panel listener distinct; changing one does not automatically change the other.

Step 3: Validate server.cfg before adding anything else

Once txAdmin itself loads, validate the game configuration in the txAdmin CFG editor and validator. Work from a minimal known-good file, then add your normal settings in small groups. The validator can identify malformed lines, while the console reveals failures that occur only when a resource is loaded.

Check registration and endpoints

• Confirm that a valid Cfx.re registration key is present, but never paste that key into a public log or support post.
• Verify that the TCP and UDP endpoint lines use valid addresses and the same intended game port. Port 30120 is the typical FiveM game endpoint.
• Make sure another application is not already using the selected endpoint.
• Check that every ensure entry names a resource directory that actually exists in the server’s resources path.

A common endpoint arrangement uses TCP 30120 and UDP 30120. The exact address may be bound to all interfaces or a specific interface according to your host, so preserve the syntax expected by your artifact and validator rather than copying an address intended for a different machine.

Check resource paths and load order

Resource names are normally the folder names, not the display name shown inside a manifest. A renamed directory, missing manifest or dependency that loads after its consumer can stop startup even though the file is present somewhere on disk. Correct the path and order, validate, and restart once; do not make several unrelated edits between tests.

Keep a minimal recovery configuration

Save a backup containing only the essential endpoint, registration and baseline resources. If the full configuration fails, substitute this minimal file through txAdmin. A server that starts with the minimal file proves that the artifact and runtime are viable and narrows the problem to one of the omitted resources or settings.

Step 4: Isolate a resource that fails to start

Resource failures are a separate layer from txAdmin launch and configuration parsing. Use the txAdmin CFG editor and validator first, then isolate changes so one faulty resource cannot hide another failure.

1. Identify the first resource named in the console error, not merely the last one reported.
2. Check that its folder exists under the expected resources directory.
3. Open the resource manifest and confirm that required files and dependencies are present.
4. Temporarily remove or disable the newest resource or recent edit.
5. Restart and observe whether the original first error disappears.
6. Reintroduce disabled resources one at a time, restarting between changes, until the failing dependency is identified.

If disabling a resource fixes startup, keep it disabled while you repair its manifest, dependency order or missing files. Re-enabling a whole group at once makes the next failure ambiguous and can reintroduce a dependency error that was already solved.

Step 5: Repair a recipe deployment at its first failed task

txAdmin recipes execute tasks sequentially and stop at the first failure. The task that appears later in the log may never have run, so repairing later files first cannot fix the deployment.

Repository and network tasks

• Check the repository URL exactly as entered in the recipe.
• Confirm that the server host has network access and can reach the repository.
• Look for authentication, DNS or transient connection messages in the first failed task.

Database tasks

• Verify database host, port, user, password and permission details used by the recipe.
• Confirm that the selected account can create or alter the required schema, if the recipe expects those operations.
• Inspect SQL errors for a missing database, incompatible schema or denied privilege.

Protect production files

Back up production configuration, resources and the database before retrying a recipe. A redeployment can overwrite files that contain local edits or secrets. If the recipe failed after changing some files, compare the backup with the working directory and restore deliberately instead of running the entire deployment repeatedly.

Step 6: Verify database and secret handling

Framework-based recipes may require a database even when the base FXServer can run without one. A server can therefore reach txAdmin successfully while a recipe-backed framework fails during startup.

• Test the database connection with the exact host, user and password configured for the server.
• Check that the user has the permissions required by the framework’s schema and migrations.
• Confirm that required SQL has been imported into the intended database, not a similarly named local database.
• Keep Cfx.re keys, database passwords and private configuration files out of screenshots, public repositories and support posts.

If credentials were exposed in a log, rotate them and update the private configuration before restarting. Redaction after publication does not guarantee that an old copy is unavailable.

Step 7: Prove player reachability independently

txAdmin commonly listens on TCP 40120, while the FiveM game endpoint commonly uses TCP and UDP 30120. The panel can be fully functional while the game endpoint is blocked by a host firewall, cloud security rule or router/NAT configuration.

1. From a client outside the server host, use FiveM Direct Connect with connect IP:Port, substituting the server’s reachable address and game port.
2. Use the exact TCP/UDP game port configured in server.cfg; do not substitute the txAdmin panel port.
3. If Direct Connect fails, inspect the host firewall for both required protocols and confirm that the router forwards the same port to the correct internal address.
4. Check that the server is bound to the interface receiving traffic and that the public address has not changed.
5. Retest from a separate network when possible, because a local test can succeed through a router’s loopback behavior even when outside clients are blocked.

Cfx.re support documentation summarizes the likely cause this way: when a direct connection fails, incorrect port forwarding or a firewall blocking connections is likely. Treat that as a reachability problem, not evidence that txAdmin or the resource stack is broken.

Symptom-to-action troubleshooting matrix

A clean recovery sequence

When several changes have accumulated, use this order to return to a known state:

1. Stop the server and preserve the first failed log.
2. Back up configuration, resources and database data; redact secrets in any copy shared for support.
3. Install or extract the recommended artifact for the correct platform in a clean directory.
4. Launch without +exec server.cfg and confirm that txAdmin appears.
5. Load a minimal validated configuration with a valid private registration key and intended game endpoints.
6. Start the server with no optional resources, then add resources one at a time while watching the first error.
7. If a recipe is required, repair its first failed task and verify repository and database prerequisites before retrying.
8. Test local server operation, then test external player reachability with Direct Connect and the configured game port.

This sequence prevents a network symptom from masking a broken artifact, and prevents a resource problem from being mistaken for a txAdmin problem.

Self-managed repair or managed hosting?

Moving the server to managed hosting changes who performs the operational work; it does not remove the need to identify the failing layer. Compare the access and responsibility you need before moving an existing installation.

A precise support report shortens diagnosis and avoids exposing credentials. Include:

• Operating system and whether the server targets GTAV Enhanced or another supported environment.
• Artifact channel or build description and whether the archive was freshly and completely extracted.
• The first meaningful error and several surrounding lines from the same startup attempt.
• Whether FXServer was launched with or without +exec server.cfg, and whether txAdmin loaded.
• The configured game port and panel port, without publishing registration keys or passwords.
• The resource, dependency or recipe task named in the error.
• Whether local access works and whether external Direct Connect fails.

Do not post an entire configuration file if it contains credentials. Share only the relevant lines after replacing secrets with a short note such as [redacted] inside the private support channel’s accepted format.
