A FiveM map that never appears is usually failing at one of five points: the resource is packaged incorrectly, it never started, the client cannot stream its assets, the client cache is missing, or the map contains oversized or poorly optimized files. Diagnose in that order. Check the resource folder and fxmanifest.lua, confirm startup errors in txAdmin, then use the client streamer commands strdbg, strlist, and strmem before changing graphics settings or buying hardware.
First determine whether the problem is the server or your FiveM client
Join a different FiveM server before editing anything. If custom maps and textures work elsewhere but fail on one server, the fault is almost certainly in that server’s resource package, startup configuration, dependencies, or asset budgets. Start with the server owner’s resource folder and startup log.

If buildings, roads, or textures are missing on every server, investigate the client streamer, graphics-memory pressure, and local cache instead. This is a diagnostic inference rather than a published failure rate, but it prevents a common mistake: rebuilding a server resource when the client cannot stream any large world assets reliably.
| Symptom | Most useful first check | Likely failure stage |
|---|---|---|
| No custom map appears at all | Resource folder, ensure entry, manifest, txAdmin first error |
Startup or registration |
| Map loads but buildings or props are invisible | Dependencies, .ymap/.ydr/.ytyp files, strlist and strdbg |
Placement, model registration, or streaming |
| Textures flicker, turn gray, or disappear at distance | strmem, texture dimensions, compressed .ytd size |
Client streaming memory |
| Only the first load is slow | Generate and install a GTA cache for the resource | Initial loading and cache generation |
| Players crash near the map | Oversized files, high polygon counts, missing LODs | Client resource or memory exhaustion |
Verify the resource layout and manifest
FiveM streams custom models, textures, and data files from a server resource to the client. Files in the resource’s stream/ directory are scanned automatically, including common map and model extensions such as .ymap, .ydr, .yft, and .ytd. Do not treat the stream directory like a normal list of downloadable files: adding every streamed asset as a files entry is unnecessary and can make troubleshooting harder.

Use the expected folder structure
A simple map resource should resemble this:
resources/
└── my_map/
├── fxmanifest.lua
└── stream/
├── downtown.ymap
├── downtown.ydr
├── downtown.ytyp
└── downtown.ytd
The folder directly containing fxmanifest.lua is the resource root. A frequent cause of an apparently dead map is one extra nesting level, such as my_map/my_map/fxmanifest.lua, or a stream directory beside the resource rather than inside it. Check capitalization and spelling as well; a startup entry must refer to the actual resource folder name.
Use a valid map manifest
For a map resource, begin with this minimal manifest:
fx_version 'cerulean'
game 'gta5'
this_is_a_map 'yes'
The this_is_a_map 'yes' directive identifies the resource as a map and helps FiveM optimize loading, particularly for large MLOs and interiors. Keep the stream files in stream/; only add explicit files entries when the resource contains other data that genuinely requires them, such as a generated cache file or a data file referenced by another manifest directive.
Save the file as exactly fxmanifest.lua, not fxmanifest.lua.txt. Remove malformed quotes, copied smart punctuation, and unsupported manifest syntax. A syntax error can prevent the entire resource from starting even when every model is present.
Check map dependencies and placement data
A map can start successfully yet show an empty lot when its placement or archetype dependencies are absent. Confirm that the package includes the required .ymap placement data, .ydr drawable models, and any referenced .ytyp archetype definitions. If a resource author supplied separate dependency resources, those resources must start before the map. Missing dependencies commonly produce invisible buildings, props without collision, or objects that appear only after repeated reconnects.
Confirm that the server actually starts the resource
A correctly structured resource does nothing until the server starts it. In the server configuration, use an ensure line with the exact resource folder name:

ensure my_map
ensure starts the resource during server boot and starts it again if it was stopped. During a live troubleshooting session, the same action can be performed from txAdmin’s resource controls. Avoid adding several differently named startup lines while testing; duplicate or misspelled entries obscure which copy of a resource is running.
Read txAdmin Live Console before changing the client
txAdmin provides resource start, stop, and restart controls, a Live Console with searchable logs, monitoring, and a CFG editor and validator. Open the server’s Live Console and restart only the suspect resource. Read the first error associated with that restart, not just the final cascade of warnings.
- Manifest or Lua syntax error: correct
fxmanifest.luaand restart the resource. - Missing dependency: install the dependency in the same server data folder and start it before the map.
- Resource not found: verify the folder name, resource path, and the server data directory selected by txAdmin.
- Duplicate or stale copy: remove or rename old copies so the server cannot load the wrong package.
- Permission or file-access error: make sure the account running FXServer can read the resource and write required cache data.
When installing txAdmin itself, use a current recommended FXServer artifact, extract it to a dedicated folder with write permissions for the account running the process, and start FXServer without +exec server.cfg while entering the txAdmin setup flow. Including that argument during initial setup can bypass the intended configuration screen. Once txAdmin is configured, use its selected server-data path consistently; editing one folder while the panel launches another produces a map that appears correct on disk but never reaches the running server.
Use FiveM’s client streamer diagnostics
Run these commands from the FiveM client console (usually opened with the console key configured for your client) while near the affected map. They reveal whether the server resource is absent or whether the resource is running but the client cannot keep up with its assets.

save_gta_cache my_map
Replace my_map with the exact resource name. The command generates a cache file intended to speed subsequent loading; it does not repair a malformed manifest, missing model, or broken dependency.
- Start the server and ensure the map resource is running.
- Run
save_gta_cache my_mapfrom the client console. - Wait for the command to finish and inspect the console for messages such as
loading CFX_PSEUDO_CACHEanddone loading. - Copy the resulting cache file into the resource root, alongside
fxmanifest.lua. Do not put it in a subdirectory. - Add that exact filename to the manifest with a matching
filesentry. For example:
files {
'my_map_cache.y*'
}
Use the actual generated filename and pattern provided by your cache output; do not copy the example name blindly. Restart the resource and verify that the cache is being loaded. If the resource still fails registration, remove the cache declaration temporarily and fix the underlying package first.
Optimize textures before blaming hardware
Texture loss is often a budget problem rather than a server CPU problem. The asset-streaming guidance identifies textures larger than 2048×2048 as a cause of severe “texture loss,” including city sections blinking or disappearing, particularly for players with lower VRAM. Treat 2048×2048 as a risk threshold, not a guarantee that every larger texture will fail on every client.
Reduce texture dimensions and compress dictionaries
- Resize unnecessarily large source images before importing them into a
.ytddictionary. - Compress textures using a format appropriate to the asset and remove unused alpha channels.
- Inspect
.ytddictionaries above 10 MB and split, reduce, or recompress them. - Do not keep multiple high-resolution variants when a smaller shared texture is visually sufficient.
- Test the map on a lower-VRAM client, not only on the developer’s machine.
These values are practical guidance from the asset-streaming documentation, not universal limits for every artifact or client build. A texture below 2048×2048 can still be inefficient if many copies stream at once, while a carefully optimized larger asset may behave acceptably on some systems.
Respect single-file and pack-size risks
The same guidance warns that a single file over 16 MB can crash players in the clothing-streaming context. That warning is not a promise that every 16 MB map file will crash, nor does staying below 16 MB guarantee safety, but it is a strong reason to inspect unusually large files before recommending new hardware. Break oversized packs into logical resources so that clients do not have to re-verify an entire collection after one asset changes.
Check models, LODs, and collision
If geometry disappears while textures remain visible, inspect high-poly models and level-of-detail (LOD) definitions. Excessive polygon counts can destabilize clients and reduce frame rate; missing or incorrect LODs can make buildings vanish at distance or force the highest-detail model to remain active. For a building that is visible but has no usable collision, verify that its collision asset is included and that the corresponding placement data references it correctly. A texture edit cannot fix missing collision or an invalid .ymap.

Match the fix to the exact symptom
The resource is absent and there is no map
- Confirm the resource folder is inside the server’s active resources directory.
- Open the folder and verify that
fxmanifest.luais at its root. - Confirm streamed assets are inside
stream/. - Check that the manifest contains
game 'gta5'andthis_is_a_map 'yes'. - Verify an
ensure resource_nameline or start the resource from txAdmin. - Read the first txAdmin error and correct dependencies, syntax, or the server-data path.
The map loads but buildings or props are invisible
Run strlist true and strdbg true while approaching the location. If the entries are absent, revisit the manifest and startup order. If they register but do not render, check that the .ymap references the intended .ydr and .ytyp assets, that all dependency resources are running, and that LOD data is present. A map can be correctly started yet still contain a broken placement reference.
Textures flicker, turn gray, or disappear at distance
Use strmem true to identify large individual assets and the total streaming load. Lower texture dimensions, remove unused alpha channels, compress and split large .ytd dictionaries, and reduce the number of high-resolution assets loaded simultaneously. Retest from a fresh client session and at the location where the loss occurs; a map that looks fine in its spawn area may exceed the budget only after neighboring resources stream in.
Only the initial loading screen is slow
Generate a GTA cache with save_gta_cache resource_name, copy the output to the resource root, and declare the matching filename in fxmanifest.lua. Confirm the console reports cache loading and completion. Do not use a cache to conceal missing files or a malformed manifest.

Players crash when approaching the map
Audit the largest files first. Look for single files above 16 MB, very large texture dictionaries, high polygon models, and absent LODs. Split the resource, reduce texture dimensions, and simplify geometry before suggesting a hardware upgrade. A server host cannot compensate for an asset that exceeds what a client can safely stream.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a hosting change is—or is not—the answer
Changing hosting may help with operational problems such as an inaccessible server-data folder, insufficient permissions, unreliable restarts, or an owner who cannot maintain txAdmin and resource dependencies. It will not correct a misplaced stream/ folder, an invalid fxmanifest.lua, a missing .ytyp, an oversized .ytd, or a broken map reference. Fix the resource and client evidence first; only then evaluate whether management overhead is the remaining problem.
There is no single hardware product that reliably fixes this class of fault. Server CPU and bandwidth matter for uptime and downloads, but missing map registration and client-side texture loss require package, manifest, streamer, cache, or asset-budget changes.

- Resize textures above 2048×2048 where practical, compress dictionaries, remove unused alpha channels, and inspect
.ytdfiles above 10 MB. - Investigate files above 16 MB, high polygon counts, missing LODs, and oversized packs.
- Retest with a lower-VRAM client and after a clean resource restart.
What a successful fix looks like
A reliable repair has evidence at each stage: txAdmin starts the resource without a manifest or dependency error; strlist shows the map assets registered; strdbg shows them loading as you approach; strmem no longer shows an unsustainable spike; and the map’s buildings, textures, collision, and distant LODs remain present after reconnecting. Document the final folder structure, manifest, dependency order, cache filename, and asset changes so the next update does not reintroduce the same failure.

Do map files have to be listed individually in fxmanifest.lua?
No. FiveM scans supported streamed assets placed in the resource’s stream/ directory automatically. Add explicit files entries only for other data that requires them, such as a generated cache file.
Can clearing the client cache fix a missing FiveM map?
It may remove stale client data, but it cannot repair a missing ensure entry, invalid manifest, absent dependency, or oversized asset. Check server startup and streamer diagnostics first.
Why does a map work for the developer but not for some players?
Different clients have different available VRAM and streaming headroom. Large textures, high-poly models, and oversized dictionaries can work on a developer’s system while causing texture loss or crashes on lower-VRAM systems.
Is a GTA cache required for every map resource?
No. It is an optimization and loading aid for resources with significant map or collision files. Generate it only after the resource itself is valid and loading.
