A failed Virtualmin installation is usually recoverable, but the safest fix is not to rerun the installer blindly. First read /root/virtualmin-install.log, identify whether the failure is caused by an unsupported or modified operating system, repository metadata, network access, a hardened /tmp, conflicting packages, or a ClamAV post-install step. Repair only the proven cause. If the server was not fresh or contains nonstandard packages, rebuilding on a supported image is often faster and safer than trying to unwind the changes.

Start with the installer log
Virtualmin’s troubleshooting guidance, published November 22, 2023, says most installation problems come from third-party repositories, an unsupported operating system, or network connectivity. The installer log normally records which package, repository, command, or service caused the stop.

Open and preserve the log
- Log in as root or use an account with equivalent privileges.
- Read the complete log with
less /root/virtualmin-install.log. PressGto jump to the end, then search with/error,/failed,/cannot, or the name of the package shown on screen. - For a quick view of the final messages, run
tail -n 100 /root/virtualmin-install.log. - Copy the exact error, including the package name, repository URL or hostname, exit status, and the step immediately before the failure. Do not edit the log or delete it before troubleshooting.
A message printed in the terminal can be a symptom rather than the cause. For example, a later service failure may simply be the first visible result of an earlier package-download error. Work upward in the log until you find the first substantive failure.
Match the symptom to the first check

Confirm that the server is a supported, fresh installation
Before changing packages, verify the foundation. Virtualmin’s download documentation says normal installation should be performed only on a fresh supported operating system. Its installation guidance identifies Rocky Linux, Debian, and Ubuntu Server LTS as safe choices for a Grade A installation. Exact support can depend on the current Virtualmin release, so check the current support list when selecting an image.

- Use a newly provisioned server image rather than a machine that has already hosted unrelated services.
- Do not preinstall a web stack, mail stack, control panel, security bundle, or “helpful” repository before running the installer.
- Do not apply custom package substitutions or extensive hardening before the installation completes.
- Confirm that the operating-system release is still supported and that the server architecture matches the installer’s requirements.
The installer repository documentation is explicit that the script is for installation, not upgrading. If Virtualmin is already installed successfully, do not run the normal installation script again to update packages or repair an unrelated service. Use the appropriate package and Virtualmin administration procedures instead.
Why a non-fresh system is difficult to repair
The installer makes decisions about package names, repositories, configuration files, users, services, and firewall behavior. A third-party repository may provide a newer or differently built dependency; a source-built daemon may not be registered with the package manager; and a pre-existing configuration can prevent the installer from safely replacing files. The result may be a chain of conflicts that is more time-consuming to reverse than to replace with a clean image.

Repair package metadata before retrying
Package-manager errors should be repaired before another installer attempt. Use the command set for the operating-system family, and wait for each command to finish with a successful exit status.

If the refresh still reports a repository problem, do not keep rerunning the Virtualmin installer. Disable or remove the offending third-party repository, correct the configured mirror or installation media, and refresh the metadata again. A repository that points to an unavailable disc, retired release, private network, or blocked host can make the installer wait indefinitely or fail on an apparently unrelated dependency.
Third-party repositories
Temporarily return the package sources to the distribution repositories supported by the Virtualmin installation guide. Record any repository you disable so it can be evaluated later, after Virtualmin is working. Avoid replacing distribution packages with source builds or vendor packages during the installation window; those changes make dependency resolution and support diagnosis harder.

Use the installer’s diagnostic options
The installer provides three useful switches for diagnosis and repository repair:
--connecttests whether the configured repositories can be reached.--setuprepairs the installer’s repository configuration.--verboseincreases diagnostic output so the failing command and response are easier to identify.
Pass these options to the official installer script you downloaded. For example, the pattern is sh install.sh --connect --verbose; use the actual filename supplied by Virtualmin rather than downloading an unrelated script. If repository configuration itself is damaged, run the script with --setup as directed by the installer documentation, then repeat the connectivity test.
Do not add --insecure-downloads simply to make a failed download proceed. That option weakens download verification. Use it only when you understand the specific reason secure retrieval cannot work and have accepted the security implications; fixing DNS, time synchronization, certificates, or the repository is the safer solution.
Fix network, DNS, and time-related failures
The installer source documentation notes that failed library downloads require checking the network connection, DNS, and accurate system time. A server can have working SSH access while still being unable to reach the particular package mirrors or name servers required by the installer.
Network checks
- Run the installer with
--connectto test its configured repository endpoints. - Check the log for one unreachable hostname, repeated timeout, or connection refusal. One dead mirror can stop an otherwise healthy installation.
- Verify that outbound HTTPS and DNS traffic is permitted by the hosting provider, security group, firewall, and local policy.
- Confirm that the configured package source matches the operating-system release; a repository for another release can produce both network-looking and metadata errors.
DNS and clock checks
Resolve the repository hostname using the server’s configured resolver and compare the result with a known-good resolver if your environment permits it. Then verify that the system clock and time zone are correct and that time synchronization is active. A clock that is substantially wrong can cause TLS certificate validation and signed-repository checks to fail even when the network path is open.

After correcting the underlying issue, run the connectivity diagnostic again with --connect --verbose. A clean diagnostic is a stronger reason to retry than simply waiting longer at the same frozen screen.
Check whether /tmp is mounted with noexec
Some security baselines mount /tmp with noexec, preventing programs stored there from running. If the log specifically shows execution failures involving temporary files, temporarily remount the filesystem with execution enabled:
mount -o remount,exec /tmpRetry the installation while that temporary setting is active. If your security policy requires a non-executable temporary directory, restore it after the installation with:
mount -o remount,noexec /tmpDo not change the mount merely because the installation failed for another reason. The remount addresses execution permission errors; it will not repair a bad repository, unsupported operating system, or package conflict.
Handle package conflicts instead of forcing them
Virtualmin’s FAQ, updated July 14, 2024, warns that nonstandard Apache, Postfix, Webmin, or similar packages can cause installation failure. The same risk applies to source-installed software and packages supplied by repositories that are not part of the supported operating-system set.

When an in-place repair is reasonable
- The server is a genuinely fresh supported image.
- The log identifies a stale metadata cache, a single disabled mirror, a temporary network outage, or a reversible
/tmpmount setting. - No important service was installed from source or from an unrelated repository.
- You can take a snapshot or backup before changing package sources.
When rebuilding is safer
- The operating system is outside the supported Grade A list or has been upgraded across releases.
- Several third-party repositories are enabled and their packages are already interdependent.
- Apache, Postfix, Webmin, or other core components were manually compiled or heavily customized.
- The installer stopped after making partial changes and the package manager now reports a large, unclear conflict set.
- You need a predictable, supportable production result and can migrate data to a new server.
Rebuilding is not an admission that the installer itself is defective. It removes unknown state and returns the machine to the conditions Virtualmin documents for normal installation.

A safe rebuild sequence
- Back up websites, databases, mail, DNS zones, user data, TLS material, and any custom scripts. Verify that the backup can be read before destroying the old server.
- Record IP addresses, hostnames, nameservers, reverse-DNS settings, firewall rules, scheduled jobs, and application credentials.
- Provision a new image running a supported Rocky Linux, Debian, or Ubuntu Server LTS release.
- Leave the image clean. Do not install alternate web or mail stacks, source packages, extra repositories, or hardening layers before Virtualmin.
- Run the official Virtualmin installer and monitor
/root/virtualmin-install.log. - Complete the post-install wizard, then migrate data and switch DNS or service endpoints in a controlled window.
- Keep the old server available until websites, mail delivery, backups, and administrative access have been verified on the new host.
Resolve ClamAV messages after installation
ClamAV messages often appear near the end of an otherwise successful installation. An “outdated” warning is generally non-fatal; it does not by itself mean that Virtualmin must be reinstalled.
Lookup or database-update failure
If the log reports that the virus database cannot be looked up or updated, refresh it with:

After the database update and service start complete successfully, retry the post-install wizard rather than rerunning the full installation script. If freshclam cannot reach its update servers, return to the DNS, network, and time checks; do not treat the resulting lookup error as proof that the whole Virtualmin installation failed.
Retry without creating a second installation problem
- Make one change at a time and write down what changed.
- Re-run the relevant diagnostic: package metadata refresh,
--connect, or the/tmpmount check. - Read the newest section of
/root/virtualmin-install.logafter each attempt. - Use
--verbosewhen the normal output does not identify the failing operation. - Stop if the log shows that Virtualmin is already installed successfully. The normal installer is not an upgrade or package-update tool.
Do not combine a repository change, a major package removal, a security-policy change, and an installer retry in one step. If the next attempt fails, you then have no reliable way to know which change helped or caused the new error.
Get help with the right evidence
When escalation is necessary, provide the exact operating-system release, whether the image was fresh, the command and options used, the first meaningful error, and the relevant portion of /root/virtualmin-install.log. Remove passwords, private keys, tokens, and customer data before sharing logs.

Support is more effective when you report the first failure rather than only the final “installation failed” line. Include any third-party repositories, source-installed services, nonstandard /tmp mount options, and network or DNS restrictions that were present.
Practical decision tree
- Frozen installer: inspect the log for unreachable repositories, unavailable installation media, and timeouts; then test with
--connect --verbose. - Package conflict: disable third-party sources and remove the cause if the server is otherwise clean; rebuild when packages were manually installed or the conflict set is broad.
- Metadata error: run
dnf clean allon EL systems orapt-get clean ; apt-get updateon Debian derivatives, then retry only after the refresh succeeds. /tmpexecution error: usemount -o remount,exec /tmpduring installation and restorenoexecafterward if policy requires it.- Download or repository failure: verify network access, DNS, and accurate time; use
--setupfor repository configuration problems. - ClamAV post-install failure: run
freshclam, startclamd@scanon EL orclamav-daemonon Debian, and retry the post-install wizard. - Existing successful installation: do not rerun the normal installer; use the supported upgrade or package-maintenance procedure instead.
What a successful recovery looks like
The recovery is complete when the package manager refreshes without errors, the installer’s connectivity test succeeds, the installation finishes on a supported clean operating system, and the post-install wizard completes without an unresolved service or database error. Keep the log and your change record with the server documentation so a future failure can be compared with a known-good installation.
