An Assetto Corsa server problem usually falls into one of three categories: the process stops during startup, outside players cannot connect, or the server runs but is missing from the online list. Start with the symptom rather than changing random ports. A startup failure is diagnosed in the server’s logs folder; an access or listing failure is diagnosed with firewall, router-forwarding, lobby-registration and client-filter checks.

Use the symptom that matches what you can observe. The first check is different for each case:

Do not begin by reinstalling the game. A clean log message or a port mismatch usually identifies the fault faster and preserves a working configuration for comparison.

When the server will not start or the console closes
Read the newest log first
In the documented AssettoServer workflow, a log should be created in the server’s logs folder even when the console window disappears immediately. Open the most recent log and read from the bottom upward until you find the first error that explains the shutdown. Later messages are often consequences of that first failure.
The guide distinguishes the severity labels used in these logs:
[FTL]means a fatal error. It terminates the server process and must be fixed before the server can start.[ERR]means an error that the process can recover from. It can still affect a session, but it does not necessarily explain an immediate shutdown.
Copy the complete message, including the path and line number, before editing files. A path in the message tells you which installation or track the running process is actually using; that can reveal that you edited a different copy of the configuration.
Fix a missing AI spline or track file
One documented fatal case is a message similar to No ai folder found. Please put at least one AI spline fast_lane.ai(p) into .... It means the server’s AI-traffic configuration expects a spline file, but the required folder or file is absent.
- Use the exact track path printed in the log rather than guessing which track installation is active.
- Open that track’s
aifolder, creating it only where the server expects it. - Place a suitable
fast_lane.aior.aipspline in the reported location. - Start the server again and inspect the new log for a different fatal message.
This particular example comes from an AssettoServer configuration that enables AI traffic. It is not a universal requirement for every ordinary Assetto Corsa dedicated server. If your server does not use AI traffic, do not add random spline files; instead, check whether an AI-related option or track entry was enabled accidentally.

Correct YAML or other configuration syntax
A malformed YAML file can stop startup before the server opens any network port. The parser normally identifies the line and character position. In the documented example, an extra leading space before a YAML document marker caused the parse failure.

- Compare its indentation with neighboring keys. YAML structure is determined by spaces, so tabs or one extra space can change the meaning of a block.
- Check that colons, quotation marks and list markers are balanced and that a value is on the correct indentation level.
- Save a backup, make one focused correction, then restart and read the new log.
Avoid reformatting the entire file while diagnosing one parser error. Large unrelated edits make it difficult to identify which change restored startup.
Check the .NET runtime only when the log is missing
The AssettoServer guide notes that if its Windows workflow produces no log at all, an incorrect .NET Runtime version or bundle is a likely cause. Treat that as a diagnosis for the documented AssettoServer setup, not as a universal explanation for every Assetto Corsa server build.
First verify that you are launching the server executable from the intended installation and that the account running it can write to the installation’s folders. If the process still closes without producing a log, compare the runtime required by your specific AssettoServer release with the runtime installed on the host. Installing a random runtime version can create a new mismatch, so use the version specified by that server build.
When the server runs but outside players cannot connect
If the local host can start a session but a player on another network cannot join, the game content is usually loading correctly. Work through the network path from the process to the Internet.

Use the actual configured ports
For the documented default public-server configuration, forward and permit:

An independent Linux setup guide lists the same default port numbers. A Steam Community response mentions both protocols for 8081, but the explicit AssettoServer documentation specifies TCP for that port. Use the protocol required by your server version and configuration; do not add UDP to 8081 solely because a different setup says so.
These are defaults, not universal values. If you changed a port in the server configuration, the firewall and router must use the changed number and protocol. A rule for 9600 does nothing if the running server is listening on a custom port.
Allow the server through the host firewall
- Open the operating system’s firewall management tool on the computer running the server.
- Allow the server executable to accept inbound connections on the private and, where appropriate, public network profile.
- Create inbound rules matching each configured port and protocol: TCP and UDP 9600, plus TCP 8081 for the documented defaults.
- Apply the rules to the active network profile and save them.
Allowing the executable and opening a port are separate checks. A port rule can exist while the firewall still blocks the program, and an executable exception can exist while the router never forwards the traffic.

- Give the server computer a stable address on the local network, either with a DHCP reservation or another method supported by your router.
- In the router’s port-forwarding page, create entries for every configured port and protocol.
- Set the destination address to the server computer, not to a different gaming PC, a second host or the router itself.
- Save the rules and restart the router only if its interface requires that step.
Compare the router entries with the server’s current configuration after every port change. A forwarding rule aimed at yesterday’s local address can fail even though its port numbers look correct.

Interpret “invalid server” or “lobby could not be reached”
Those messages do not prove that the installation is corrupt. They can result from a blocked port, a protocol mismatch, forwarding to the wrong host or a server that is not registering with the public lobby. Check the log and the network rules together rather than repeatedly restarting the game.

Confirm public-lobby registration
The sample configuration for the documented setup uses REGISTER_TO_LOBBY=1. Confirm that this setting is enabled in the configuration actually loaded by the running process. If it is disabled, the server may be reachable directly or on a LAN while remaining absent from the public list.
After changing registration, restart the server and watch its log for registration or connectivity errors. A successful local launch alone does not prove that the lobby received the server’s registration.

Public listing still depends on the server being reachable from outside the host network. Recheck the executable exception, inbound rules, router destination address and protocol for every configured port. A server can appear locally while its public traffic is blocked at the host or router.
Remove client-side filters
Search filters can hide a correctly registered server. On the joining computer, clear restrictive filters such as region, password, track, session type or player-count filters, refresh the list and search by the exact server name. The Steam Community troubleshooting response specifically calls out filters as a cause of missing entries.
Allow time for the listing to refresh
A 2022 Steam Community response reports that a listing can take roughly two to five minutes to appear. That is an anecdotal observation, not an official service-level guarantee. Refresh after a short wait, but do not use the delay as evidence that forwarding is correct. If the server remains absent, return to registration, firewall and router checks.
LAN visibility is not public visibility
AssettoServer documentation notes that LAN discovery can take a few moments and may require refreshing the LAN list. A server appearing there proves only that local discovery works. It does not prove that public-lobby registration succeeded or that an Internet player can reach the forwarded ports.
Use two separate tests:
- LAN test: a second computer on the same network refreshes the LAN list and can join.
- Outside-network test: a player on a different Internet connection finds or joins the server.
If the LAN test fails, investigate the server process, local firewall and game configuration first. If LAN works but the outside test fails, focus on public registration, router forwarding, address stability and Internet-facing firewall rules.
Make sure you are troubleshooting Assetto Corsa, not ACC
The standard Assetto Corsa Dedicated Server software is for Assetto Corsa. A Steam Community answer explicitly distinguishes it from Assetto Corsa Competizione. ACC has separate server requirements and should not be assumed to use the same files, ports or configuration labels.
Check the game title in the launcher and the server package name before applying any fix. If the host is running ACC, stop and use documentation specific to ACC rather than copying an AC configuration.
Content Manager is optional
The AssettoServer guide states that the full version of Content Manager is not required to host, configure or play on a server. You can therefore diagnose startup, ports and listing problems without treating Content Manager as a prerequisite.
If you use Content Manager as a convenience, verify that it points to the same server and track files as the dedicated-server executable. Editing a setting in one installation does not change a separate server directory. When in doubt, use the path shown in the server log as the authoritative location.
A complete recovery sequence
Use this order when several symptoms appear at once. It prevents a network change from hiding a configuration error.

- Forward to the right host: make sure the router targets the server computer’s current local address.
- Enable public registration: confirm
REGISTER_TO_LOBBY=1where that setting is used. - Test public visibility: clear client filters, refresh and allow a short listing delay before diagnosing a persistent absence.
What not to change blindly
- Do not add AI spline files when the server is not configured for AI traffic; use the log to establish that requirement.
- Do not assume default ports after customizing the server configuration.
- Do not treat LAN visibility as proof of Internet reachability.
- Do not install Content Manager solely to make a dedicated server work.
- Do not apply Assetto Corsa instructions to Assetto Corsa Competizione.
- Do not interpret a recoverable
[ERR]as equivalent to a fatal[FTL]shutdown.
