If a carrier trial won’t activate, first check eligibility, eSIM availability, device lock status, and internet access. If the eSIM is already installed but data will not work, confirm that the trial line is turned on and selected for mobile data. The exact steps depend on your carrier, phone, and error message, so use the checks below to narrow down the problem before following the carrier’s device-specific instructions.
Start by identifying where activation fails
Write down the carrier and trial, your phone model and operating-system version, and the exact error shown on screen. Check whether the trial eSIM appears in your phone’s SIM or cellular settings, which line is selected for mobile data, and whether the phone shows cellular signal. Apple recommends noting the error message when troubleshooting eSIM setup; its eSIM setup guidance can help with iPhone-specific issues.

These details separate two different problems: the carrier profile may not have installed or activated, or it may be installed while the phone is routing data through another line. The next check depends on which state you see.
If the trial will not activate
Confirm that the offer and phone are eligible
Check the trial’s current terms for your location and device. An eSIM-capable phone is not necessarily eligible for every offer: compatibility, carrier lock status, and an available eSIM slot or profile can matter. Requirements are carrier-specific. For example, Verizon’s Free Trial FAQ says a smartphone must have an eSIM slot available and that the eSIM intended for its trial must not already be active with another carrier. Do not assume another carrier has the same rule.

The Verizon FAQ describes a 30-day trial; that is a Verizon offer term, not a general trial length, and offer details can change. Check the carrier’s current terms before enrolling.
Check whether the phone is unlocked and online
Some trials require an unlocked phone. T-Mobile’s instructions for non-T-Mobile Android devices say to make sure the device is unlocked. Its Android trial guide also notes that the phone needs working Wi-Fi or cellular internet during setup. If the phone is offline, an app-based activation may not complete.

Update, restart, and retry the carrier’s steps
T-Mobile recommends updating device software and restarting before retrying Android trial setup, then using the instructions for the specific error. Follow your own carrier’s activation flow rather than assuming its app, eligibility checks, or menu labels match another provider’s. Do not delete an installed eSIM as an early catch-all fix: installing it again may require carrier assistance or a new activation flow.
If the eSIM is installed but mobile data does not work
Turn on the trial line and select it for data
On a dual-SIM phone, an installed or active trial profile is not automatically the line used for data. In the phone’s SIM or cellular settings, make sure the trial line is enabled and selected as the cellular or mobile-data line. Apple explains that dual-SIM iPhones can have multiple plans but use one cellular data network at a time; labels and steps vary by device and operating system. Check cellular signal and Wi-Fi separately
Note whether the phone has cellular bars, whether mobile data works, and whether Wi-Fi works. No signal, a signal with no data, and a Wi-Fi connection problem are different symptoms. Verizon separates these checks in its connectivity troubleshooting guidance. If Wi-Fi works but cellular data does not, focus on the trial line, coverage, and carrier settings. If the issue affects this phone across locations, device network configuration may be involved.
Leave network reset and APN changes to the relevant instructions
A network-settings reset can remove saved network configuration, so treat it as a later step and follow the phone maker’s or carrier’s directions. For bring-your-own-device data problems, T-Mobile says APN settings may need to be added; do not copy APN values from an unrelated carrier or device. Use the carrier’s current instructions for your exact setup.

When the carrier needs to resolve it
Some failures involve offer eligibility, account verification, or activation on the carrier’s side; changing phone settings cannot resolve every such issue. If setup still fails, contact the trial provider through the support route it specifies. Share the exact error, phone model and OS version, whether the eSIM appears installed, and what you have already checked. Use the trial’s temporary number if the carrier asks you to.

For example, Verizon says to enable location services for My Verizon if its app cannot verify location. Its FAQ also warns that free-trial support is limited and that in some cases the trial can end if activation cannot be completed.
