Does Apple Watch Series 12 require a subscription for health tracking? No. Its new Readiness score and related health insights do not require a separate subscription, according to CNET reviewer Vanessa Hand Orellana. That does not make every Apple Watch service free: Apple Music requires a subscription, and Apple Fitness+ is a separate service with a limited promotional offer for eligible new subscribers in some regions.
Announced September 9, 2026, and available from September 18, Series 12 starts at $399 in the U.S. Its headline health addition is a Readiness score built from activity, training load, vitals and sleep. The trade-offs are familiar styling, a battery rating that still calls for regular charging, and new audio features reviewers had not yet tested at publication.

What’s new in Apple Watch Series 12?
Apple announced Series 12 on September 9, 2026. It became available September 18, with U.S. pricing starting at $399. Apple lists 42mm and 46mm sizes and aluminum, titanium and ceramic case options. The main change is an expanded health-sensing system and Readiness feature, rather than a dramatic redesign.

These are Apple’s descriptions of the system; they do not establish that the watch can diagnose a medical condition.

How the Readiness score works
Readiness combines recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep score into a score from 0 to 10. Apple pairs the score with guidance labeled Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready or Go For It. It is best understood as a wellness prompt to help interpret recent patterns, not a diagnosis or a replacement for discussing health concerns with a clinician. Apple says its Vitals app is for wellness, not medical use.
Do not expect a useful baseline on the first morning. CNET reviewer Vanessa Hand Orellana says Readiness requires seven full days and nights of wear to establish a baseline, with at least four hours of sleep for each counted session. If you do not wear the watch consistently overnight, or the sleep sessions are too short, the feature may take longer to become useful.
Does Apple Watch Series 12 require a subscription for health tracking?
No separate subscription is required for the new health insights, including the underlying data behind Readiness, according to CNET’s review. Orellana contrasts that with Oura’s $7-per-month fee to see what drives its score and long-term trends; that figure and comparison are the reviewer’s, not a verified current Oura price.
The subscription-free point applies to Series 12’s health and Readiness features, not every service in Apple’s ecosystem. Apple says Apple Music requires a subscription. Apple also advertises a three-month Apple Fitness+ promotional offer for eligible new subscribers who purchase an eligible watch, subject to regional availability and offer terms. Cellular plans, third-party apps and other optional media or fitness services may also cost extra; their terms vary.

Battery life and charging in a day-and-night routine
Apple rates Series 12 for up to 24 hours of normal use, up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode and up to 10 hours during an outdoor workout. Apple also says a 15-minute charge can provide up to 12 hours of normal use, while five minutes can provide up to 10 hours of sleep tracking. These are manufacturer results, not promises for every wearer.
Apple’s battery figures come from tests of preproduction watches in July and August 2026 using a prescribed schedule of checks, notifications, app use, a workout and sleep tracking, with defined iPhone and cellular connections. Apple cautions that actual battery life varies with use, configuration, network, signal and other factors. In practical terms, the short charging windows may help fit a top-up around sleep tracking, but charging remains part of the routine.
- WIRED: Reviewer Boutayna Chokrane says the 24-hour rating still means regular charging, though she found a quick top-up before bed useful.
- CNET: Orellana reports about 30 hours in her test, which included a GPS outdoor run and one night of sleep tracking. That is one reviewer’s result, not a general battery estimate.
Design, materials and upgrade value
Series 12 retains a familiar look, according to both WIRED and CNET reviewers. Apple offers aluminum, titanium and ceramic cases. Apple says the aluminum models use Ceramic Shield 2, which is 60 percent tougher than the Ion-X glass on Series 11. That is Apple’s materials claim, not the result of an independent drop or scratch test; WIRED’s reviewer says she did not meaningfully test the durability claim.
WIRED awarded the watch 9/10 after a week of day-and-night use. Its reviewer sees a stronger case for upgrading from Series 8 or older than from Series 9, 10 or 11. That is a reviewer’s buying judgment, not a guarantee that every owner will notice the same improvement. CNET notes that the optional ceramic cases start at $899 in its review, a substantial increase over the $399 U.S. starting price.

Consider the purchase in light of your current watch and priorities:
- Coming from Series 8 or older: The new health sensing and Readiness feature may make the generational change more compelling, particularly if you will wear the watch at night consistently.
- Coming from Series 9, 10 or 11: WIRED’s reviewer sees fewer reasons to switch. Decide whether Readiness, the newer sensing system, materials or charging features matter enough to justify the change.
- Choosing a case: Compare aluminum, titanium and ceramic options against your budget and material preference; the ceramic entry price cited by CNET is $899.
- Expecting a no-cost ecosystem: Health insights are included, but services such as Apple Music are not. Check each optional service and cellular plan separately.
- Wanting a longer-lasting battery: Treat Apple’s ratings as results under its test schedule, and factor regular charging into your day-and-night wear plans.
Audio Intelligence, privacy and untested features
Apple announced Audio Intelligence features including Live Rewind and Siri Recap. At publication, neither the WIRED nor CNET reviewer had been able to test them; they were expected later in 2026. Their usefulness, reliability and day-to-day behavior therefore were not established in those reviews.
WIRED reports Apple’s account that raw audio is processed in a protected area and that the features do not create or store audio recordings. Those are Apple’s statements, not an independent privacy verification. WIRED’s reviewer also raises concerns about having an always-listening device. Readers who are uncomfortable with that premise should weigh it against the convenience of the announced features.

CNET reviewer Orellana also reports frequent false Sound Recognition alerts in her testing. This is one reviewer’s experience; it does not establish a general false-alert rate.

The verdict: who should consider Series 12?
Series 12’s clearest appeal is that its new Readiness and health insights are included without a separate health-data subscription. That makes it easier to try the feature without committing to a recurring fee, though it takes a week of consistent day-and-night wear to establish the baseline described by CNET. The watch still asks buyers to accept regular charging, and its design is familiar rather than a visible reinvention.
It is most persuasive for people upgrading from an older Apple Watch who want integrated wellness and readiness prompts, and who are comfortable wearing a watch overnight. Owners of more recent models have a narrower upgrade case. Anyone buying chiefly for Audio Intelligence should wait for independent hands-on assessments, since reviewers had not tested Live Rewind or Siri Recap at publication.
Apple vice president of Worldwide Apple Watch Product Marketing Kaiann Drance said: “With our new Health Sensing System and S11 chip, Apple Watch Series 12 gives you meaningful insights, like readiness, so you can better understand how to take on your day and care for your health, plus intelligence features that make everyday life easier.” That is Apple’s description of its goals; the health score remains a wellness tool, not medical advice.
