A blurry website screenshot usually has one of three causes: the site supplied low-resolution images, the capture was rendered at too few pixels for its intended size, or a sharp image is being enlarged in a preview. The right fix depends on which one you have.
Diagnose what is actually blurry
Open the original screenshot in an image viewer and inspect it at 100% or its native-pixel setting. Record the file’s pixel width and height. A thumbnail or a preview scaled to fit a message pane can make a sharp image look soft, so do not judge it only at an arbitrary enlarged size.

Apple’s archived Safari image-delivery guide explains why the first case can happen: “Text and HTML forms are already optimized for Retina displays.” The same guide notes that images can appear blurry when they lack sufficient image data. Capture a Retina-sized screenshot with shot-scraper
If the saved file itself has too few pixels, recapture the page at a higher device scale factor. The shot-scraper manual documents --retina as setting the device scale factor to 2, which doubles both output dimensions while retaining the CSS viewport dimensions. Its documented example turns a 400 by 600 CSS-pixel viewport into an 800 by 1200 pixel image. Install shot-scraper in the Python environment you use for browser automation, then run a capture with the Retina option:
python -m pip install shot-scraper
shot-scraper install
shot-scraper https://example.com --retina -o screenshot.pngReplace https://example.com with the page you need. If you need a particular layout, set the CSS viewport dimensions using the viewport options supported by your installed shot-scraper version, then add --retina. Keep the viewport at the dimensions that produce the desired responsive layout; increasing the viewport changes how the page lays out, while increasing device scale factor raises the output pixel density.

Check dimensions before using the capture
- Compare the resulting file’s pixel dimensions with the size at which it will be placed or displayed.
- Inspect text, controls, and embedded images separately. A higher-resolution capture cannot restore detail absent from an image the site served.
- When testing responsive behavior, distinguish the CSS viewport from the output file’s pixel dimensions; they are related but not interchangeable.
Use Safari zoom only when readability is the goal
Safari page zoom changes how large webpage content appears to you; it is not an image-enhancement operation and cannot restore missing pixels in an existing screenshot. To change zoom for one site, use Page menu > Page Zoom. For broader site-specific defaults, use Safari > Settings > Websites > Page Zoom. If you maintain the website, fix the image assets
Retina displays use more physical device pixels to represent content laid out in CSS pixels. Apple’s archived guide describes four device pixels within each CSS pixel on Retina displays and explains delivering standard- and higher-resolution image resources so a browser can use suitable artwork for display density. The archive dates to 2013, so treat it as background for the pixel-density principle rather than current implementation instructions in every detail. - Provide raster images with enough source pixels for their rendered size and target density; stretching a smaller image does not recreate lost detail.
- Prefer a vector format such as SVG for graphics that are naturally represented as paths, such as many icons and logos.
- Check the actual image resource the browser loads at the relevant viewport and display density, not just the CSS dimensions assigned to it.
Test viewport and pixel ratio in Safari
Safari Responsive Design Mode lets developers vary the viewport and pixel ratio to inspect page rendering. A preview can be scaled down when the simulated viewport is larger than the Safari window, so assess the actual image output rather than relying only on the preview’s apparent sharpness. Text is sharp but a logo or photo is blurry
This points toward the website’s image asset rather than the screenshot scale. Recapturing at a larger device scale may preserve a larger file, but it cannot add details missing from the image resource. If you maintain the site, serve a suitable high-density raster asset or vector artwork where appropriate.

The entire screenshot is soft, even at native size
Check its pixel dimensions against the intended output dimensions. If the file is undersized, recapture with a browser tool that supports device scale factor, such as shot-scraper’s documented --retina option. Preserve the CSS viewport needed for the desired page layout.

The preview may be enlarging the image beyond its native dimensions. Inspect the original file at native size; if the image must be placed larger, recapture it at sufficient pixel dimensions rather than enlarging the existing screenshot.

Safari zoom made the page larger but the screenshot is still blurry
Page zoom changes webpage readability, not the detail available in raster image files. Use a higher device-scale browser capture for a larger screenshot, or replace the site’s low-resolution assets if you control the page.

Technical context: CSS pixels and Retina pixels
A CSS viewport describes layout dimensions; a screenshot file records output pixels. On a Retina display, more physical pixels can represent a CSS pixel. Consequently, a page can have the correct layout at its CSS dimensions while its screenshot needs more output pixels to appear crisp at a larger display size. The capture scale controls rendered screenshot density; the website’s asset selection controls the detail in its images.
