First, identify where the image is blurry
Display the projector’s built-in focus or test pattern, if available. If the whole image looks soft, check focus, lens cleanliness, throw distance, and the source resolution. If the center is sharp but one side or corner is not, check the screen and projector alignment first. Sony advises checking for a tilted or curved screen and making sure the projector’s front is parallel to it; misalignment can leave one side larger and blurred. Sony support

Correct the screen and projector position
- Look for bowing, wrinkles, a tilted frame, or an uneven wall surface.
- Make sure the projector is level and centered, with its front or lens plane parallel to the screen.
- Reposition the projector or correct the screen installation, then inspect the test pattern again.
Do this before using keystone correction to disguise a physical alignment problem. Epson recommends positioning the projector so the keystone adjustment angle is not excessively wide, because correction can distort the image. Epson support
Refocus with your projector’s own procedure
Depending on the model, focus may be controlled by a remote, an on-screen setting, a ring, a lever, or autofocus. Consult the manual for the exact model and focus on a test pattern or fine text. Check the center and corners, aiming for the best overall balance; Sony notes that some models may not allow every corner to be equally sharp.

Sony’s guidance for the products covered by its support article recommends allowing the projector to run for more than 30 minutes before fine adjustment and completing that adjustment within 15 minutes after changing the projected image. Those timings are model-specific, not universal UST requirements. Sony support
Focus and geometry are separate checks: correct placement and screen flatness first, then refocus. Epson’s EF-21/22 guide describes that family’s autofocus and manual focus procedures; its settings and operating conditions should not be assumed to apply to other projectors. Epson EF-21/22 guide

Check the lens, room temperature, and throw distance
Clean the lens or projection window only as the owner’s manual permits, using its specified materials and method. If the projector has just been brought in from a cold environment, condensation on the lens can blur the image; Epson advises letting the projector warm to room temperature before use. Epson support

Also check that the projector is installed at the distance specified for its screen size. UST throw distances vary by model, so use the manual rather than a generic measurement.

Reduce correction and verify the input signal
Once the projector is as square to the screen as practical, reset or reduce keystone and corner correction, then refocus. Epson warns that keystone adjustment can reduce image quality. For a computer source, select the projector’s native resolution when available. If the image is still soft or shows bands, follow the signal-adjustment instructions for that projector and source.
For the Epson EF-21/22 only, the 2024 guide specifies autofocus and keystone correction conditions: a projected diagonal of 30–100 inches, projection distance of about 28–87 inches (0.7–2.2 m), and installation angle within 20 degrees right, left, up, or down. When a screen replacement or service may make sense
Consider replacing a screen only if it is actually curved, uneven, or otherwise preventing a flat projection surface. A new screen will not fix a projector that is out of alignment or has a focus-mechanism fault; confirm size, mounting, and compatibility with the exact projector before buying.
