What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Start with the mouse’s battery or charge, power cycle it, and move it closer to the computer. Then reduce wireless interference, check Bluetooth and power settings, and pair the mouse again. If it still disconnects, test it with another computer: that helps distinguish a mouse problem from an issue with the original computer’s Bluetooth setup.
First identify whether the connection or tracking is the problem
A mouse that disappears from Bluetooth or takes a while to reconnect has a connection problem. If it stays connected but the pointer moves slowly, erratically, or in jumps, focus on tracking, the sensor, and interference. Both symptoms can occur together, so work through the basic checks before assuming the mouse is defective.

Check power, Bluetooth, and distance
- Charge the mouse or replace its batteries. If it uses replaceable cells, confirm they are installed in the correct orientation and use the type specified by the mouse or its manual. A low battery can prevent some Bluetooth devices from maintaining a connection, according to Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.
- Switch the mouse off and on. Check that Bluetooth is enabled on the computer. If you are reconnecting or pairing the mouse, put it into pairing mode as directed by its manufacturer.
- Bring the mouse closer to the computer. Remove physical obstructions, especially metal objects between them, and temporarily reduce nearby wireless devices if practical.
Reduce wireless interference
Interference can cause a poor connection or make pointer movement erratic and jumpy. Apple recommends moving the computer and Bluetooth device closer together, reducing sources of interference, and moving USB 3 or Thunderbolt devices and hubs away from the computer’s wireless devices. See Apple’s guidance on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth interference. This is useful beyond Macs: nearby equipment and obstructions can affect wireless conditions around a computer.

- Temporarily turn off Energy Saver or Battery Saver. If the problem stops, power management may be involved.
- Check the Bluetooth adapter’s power setting. Open Device Manager, find the Bluetooth adapter, open its properties, and look for a Power Management tab. If Windows offers the option to turn off the device to save power, clear it. Microsoft recommends this check for recurring disconnections in its Bluetooth disconnection troubleshooting steps.
- Restart Bluetooth Support Service and check the driver. Microsoft includes restarting Bluetooth Support Service and updating the Bluetooth driver among its suggested steps for repeated drops. Use the computer maker’s or adapter maker’s current driver guidance if Windows reports that no update is available.
- Try the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter. Windows 11 users can begin with the Bluetooth troubleshooter in Get Help, as described in Microsoft’s Windows Bluetooth troubleshooting page.
Microsoft’s troubleshooting pages cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That distinction matters when deciding whether the operating system continues to receive free support updates; see Microsoft’s Bluetooth support guidance.
Remove the mouse and pair it again
A fresh pairing can help when the mouse appears in the computer’s Bluetooth list but will not connect reliably.

- Open the computer’s Bluetooth settings and remove or forget the mouse.
- Put the mouse into pairing mode.
- Use the computer’s option to add a Bluetooth device, then select the mouse when it appears.
For Windows, Microsoft includes removing and reconnecting a device in its Bluetooth connection troubleshooting.
Test whether the fault follows the mouse
Try the mouse with another computer, if one is available. If it works there, the original computer’s Bluetooth settings, adapter, driver, or power management are more likely places to investigate. If the same problem follows the mouse, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact model and its service options.

For Microsoft Surface mice and keyboards, Microsoft also suggests temporarily turning off other Bluetooth devices connected to the computer and testing the mouse with another PC. Its Surface mouse and keyboard troubleshooting page notes a specific wake-up behavior: in that context, Bluetooth devices may hibernate after 8–10 minutes of inactivity and take several seconds to reconnect. This is not a general timing rule for every Bluetooth mouse.
If the mouse stays connected but pointer movement lags
Clean the sensor and check tracking settings
For a Magic Mouse, Apple recommends checking the sensor for dirt and reviewing the Mac’s tracking-speed settings if tracking is slow. Follow Apple’s Magic Mouse tracking guidance. For another model, use its manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and sensor care.

Check for interference before changing hardware
Jumpy or inconsistent motion can be caused by interference even when the mouse still appears connected. Apply the distance and USB 3 or Thunderbolt placement checks described above before treating slow tracking as a sensor or hardware failure.
Use model-specific support when the basic checks fail
Mouse behavior and recommended fixes vary by model. Logitech, for example, has a support article for Bluetooth products that disconnect or lag: Logitech’s Bluetooth disconnection and lag guidance. Follow current instructions for the exact device rather than relying on a generic utility; Logitech marks its Connection Utility as no longer supported or maintained.

If the mouse still fails after power, signal, pairing, and cross-computer checks, use the manufacturer’s diagnostics or service path. Consider replacing the mouse only if those checks point to a hardware fault; a replacement cannot fix a problem that is actually in the computer’s Bluetooth setup.
