Start by opening the TV’s own menu or running its built-in picture test. If the black vertical line appears there, it is likely a TV-side display problem; if the test is clear, check the connected device, input, and cable before considering service.
First, find out where the line appears
Check whether the line shows on every input, only with one HDMI device or broadcast source, or even over the TV’s own menu. A line that appears in the menu or built-in test is different from an artifact confined to one signal path. This comparison helps separate a TV-side symptom from a problem with an external source.

Run the TV’s built-in picture test
Use the picture test or screen self-diagnosis for your exact TV model. Menu paths vary by manufacturer, model, and software version, so follow the instructions for your set rather than relying on a universal button sequence. - The line appears in the menu or test: The symptom is present without the external picture source. Continue with a basic restart; if the line remains, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider.
- The test image is clear: Focus on the source device, selected input, and cable used for the affected picture.
If the test is clear, check the cable and source
- Turn off the TV before handling connected cables.
- Inspect the HDMI or antenna cable and the connected ports for visible damage or debris, then reconnect securely.
- If available, try a known-good spare cable. Test another input or source device when practical to see whether the line follows one connection or device.
- Replace a cable only if the checks point to it. A new HDMI cable cannot fix a fault in the TV’s display.
Samsung recommends starting with the external device’s cable when its picture test shows no lines; LG also recommends trying a spare cable. These checks help narrow the cause, but they do not establish that every line limited to an external source is a cable fault.

Check settings only when the symptom fits
Line or artifact near the screen edge
LG says an incorrect aspect ratio can cause edge lines and recommends checking the setting; 16:9 or Original may be appropriate, depending on the picture and model. The menu name and available options can vary.
Artifacts tied to an HDMI device
If lines occur with flicker or color distortion on an external HDMI source, HDMI Deep Color incompatibility is one possibility identified by LG. Its guidance describes turning that setting off for the affected input. Use your model’s manual or support page for the exact control and path. These settings are troubleshooting possibilities, not proof that they caused a persistent black line.

When to contact TV support or arrange service
If the line remains in the built-in picture test or over the TV menu after a basic restart, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider. Samsung notes that a black line can be associated with a cracked screen and that physical damage may not be covered by warranty. Check your warranty terms and ask about diagnostic and repair charges before authorizing work; repair pricing and coverage depend on the set and circumstances.
