First identify those symptoms, then check the device and video connection that fits your setup. Netflix says black video with sound usually points to a device or video-cable issue; a black screen with no sound can also indicate a device or connection problem.
Is the screen black with sound or without sound?
Notice whether audio continues while the picture is black. Netflix separates these symptoms because the checks differ: black screen with sound and black screen with no sound. If both picture and audio are absent, follow the no-sound guidance.

Does it happen with one title or every title?
Play another show or movie. If other titles work normally, report the affected title through your account’s Viewing Activity using Netflix’s instructions for reporting a title problem. If multiple titles show the same symptom, troubleshoot the device and its connection.

For a TV, streaming player, console, or other TV-connected device
Restart the device
Netflix’s TV-connected-device procedure is to unplug the device, press its power button once, then wait one minute before reconnecting it—or leave it unplugged for three minutes. Reconnect it and try Netflix again. Follow the device maker’s instructions if they differ.

Check the TV input and video path
- Confirm the TV is set to the input used by the Netflix device, and make sure both devices are powered on.
- Check that the video cables are firmly connected. If you use HDMI, reverse the cable ends and test again.
- Connect the streaming device directly to the TV, bypassing any receiver or sound system.
- Try another HDMI port on the TV, then test another cable. A replacement HDMI cable is worth trying only if these checks point to the cable; it is not a guaranteed fix.
- If the device works on another TV, the original TV port may be the problem. Contact the TV manufacturer for device-specific help.
Menus and connection options vary by TV, streaming player, console, and model. For model-specific instructions, consult the device manual or manufacturer. Netflix’s sound-present troubleshooting steps and no-sound steps provide the relevant branches.
For a phone or tablet
Use steps intended for the device’s operating system and model rather than assuming every menu is in the same place. Netflix notes that Android screen mirroring to a TV may not be supported; use a supported connection instead.

- Android: Netflix’s sound-related troubleshooting includes restarting the device and updating Android OS. Check the device maker’s instructions for the current update and restart process.
- iPhone or iPad: Quit and reopen the Netflix app, then restart the device if the issue continues.
For the current device-specific sequence, start with Netflix’s black-screen steps or its no-sound troubleshooting, as applicable.

Browser playback has browser-specific troubleshooting, so do not apply one browser’s fix to every computer or operating system. Use Netflix’s general video troubleshooting guide and select the instructions for your browser and device. If you are using a computer connected to a TV, also check the TV input and test the video connection directly, without an intermediate receiver or sound system.

When to contact Netflix, the device maker, or your ISP
- One title fails while others play: Report that title through Viewing Activity.
- The problem follows a particular device, TV port, or picture setting: Check the device manual or contact its manufacturer; settings and menus vary by model.
- No-sound trouble persists after device checks: Netflix’s guidance includes contacting your internet service provider about a possible network connection issue. Tell the ISP whether other devices on the same network are affected and whether the Netflix device connects over Wi-Fi or a cable.
