First locate where the picture goes black: OBS preview, YouTube’s live output, or the archived stream. Those are different symptoms with different likely causes; “24/7” alone does not identify the problem. Compare OBS’s preview and output with YouTube’s live dashboard and a local recording before changing capture, network, or encoding settings.
How to fix a black screen on a 24/7 YouTube lofi stream in OBS
Use this sequence to isolate the failure before changing settings. Note when the black screen begins, what OBS shows at that moment, and whether YouTube reports an encoder or connection error.

- Compare the three views: OBS preview/output, YouTube’s live preview or dashboard, and a local recording of the stream. YouTube recommends checking the encoder’s picture and sound, dashboard errors, CPU load, and a local archive; if encoder output looks healthy, investigate the outbound connection. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.
- Identify the source type for any black source in OBS: Display Capture, Window Capture, Game Capture, Media Source, or Browser Source.
- Follow the branch below that matches the evidence: black in OBS, black only on YouTube, dropped frames/disconnection, or choppy/overloaded output.
If the OBS preview or source is black
Start with the source that is actually black. A lofi scene commonly uses media or browser content, but do not assume that: inspect the scene’s Sources list and select the affected source. Game Capture guidance only applies if the scene uses Game Capture.
Media Source or Browser Source
Confirm that the source is present, visible (the eye icon is enabled), and positioned within the scene canvas. Check the source’s own file or URL and whether its content plays or loads. If the source is animated video or a browser page, game-hook settings are not a justified fix; use OBS’s media- or browser-source troubleshooting for that source type. OBS notes that demanding or numerous media and browser sources can also affect performance, but that does not establish them as the cause of every black screen. Display Capture, Window Capture, or Game Capture
For a desktop, app window, or game that is black in OBS, verify that the selected display/window/game is the one currently open and that the capture source is visible. Game Capture targets games; OBS notes that some games may need Window Capture instead. Apply Game Capture-specific steps only when the source is actually Game Capture. OBS Game Capture troubleshooting.
Laptop or multi-GPU display capture
On laptops, OBS and the captured display or application may be assigned to different GPUs, which can affect capture. Check the GPU assignment and capture method, and record your Windows and OBS versions before following version-specific directions. OBS’s Laptop Troubleshooting page (published 2021-06-12) says its newer Display Capture method requires OBS 27 or later and Windows 10 version 1903 or later. It discusses leaving OBS on the default high-power GPU in the circumstances described and trying the Windows 10 capture method manually if automatic selection fails. Treat those as version-scoped directions, not universal current UI instructions; verify them for your installed releases. OBS Laptop Troubleshooting.

If YouTube is black but OBS looks right
Compare OBS’s preview and encoder output with YouTube’s live preview. Check the YouTube Live Control Room for encoder errors and check OBS’s CPU load. If OBS’s output and a local recording contain the expected picture but YouTube’s delivered stream does not, investigate outbound connectivity rather than changing a working scene source. YouTube recommends testing the connection and contacting the internet service provider if the test identifies a problem. YouTube live-stream troubleshooting.

If OBS reports dropped frames or disconnections
Dropped frames point to delivery over the network, not necessarily to a black capture source. OBS says dropped frames can mean the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate; too many may lead to disconnection. OBS Project’s official guidance says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” That statement concerns network dropped frames, not all black-screen problems. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
- Check whether your upload connection can sustain the stream’s configured bitrate. If not, try a lower bitrate and see whether stability improves.
- Prefer a wired connection where possible. Check for interference or congestion if using Wi-Fi.
- Temporarily investigate VPNs, firewall/security software, network-optimization software, and network drivers that may affect the connection. Change one factor at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
- Dynamic bitrate can be a fallback during congestion, but it reduces quality and does not fix the underlying network cause. OBS Dynamic Bitrate.
Use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance for the relevant checks; do not treat a network adjustment as a fix for a source that is already black in OBS. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

The built-in cable features 26AWG (2C) + 30AWG (1P) tinned copper conductors, ensuring excellent conductivity and corrosion resistance, enhancing durability, and reducing signal loss
If output is choppy or OBS reports encoding/rendering overload
Performance overload is a separate branch from a capture-source mismatch or network drop. Check GPU use and reduce the workload methodically: simplify the scene, remove sources you do not need, and reduce output resolution or frame rate if necessary. Media and browser sources can consume resources, particularly when large or numerous. These steps address performance evidence; they do not prove that scene complexity caused a particular lofi black screen. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.

Keep a 24/7 stream running after you identify the fault
A 24/7 schedule makes it useful to note whether the failure recurs and whether OBS, YouTube, or the archive first shows the problem. It does not, by itself, establish a time-dependent OBS defect. Save a local recording during diagnosis, and check copyright and YouTube’s monetization rules for the music and visuals you use; permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions. See YouTube’s live-stream guidance and review your content rights before leaving a loop running.
