Yes. OBS supports WebM as a local media file, and its VLC Video source can play a playlist of files. Install VLC that matches your OBS architecture, add the WebM files to a VLC Video source, and check playback and audio in OBS before going live. The playlist’s file format is separate from the protocol and codec OBS uses to send the live stream to YouTube.
Use VLC Video for a multi-file playlist
OBS documents WebM among the video file types supported by its Media Source. That source is for a single local file; for a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source. - Install VLC in the architecture matching your OBS installation. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, select the scene for the program, add a VLC Video source, and add your WebM files to its playlist.
- Set the playlist’s loop and shuffle options for the program you want. Loop is on by default and shuffle is off by default, according to OBS’s documentation.
- Preview the playlist in OBS. Confirm that the video plays and that the intended audio is audible before starting the broadcast.
- Configure OBS’s stream output separately for the YouTube ingest protocol you selected.
Why VLC Video may be missing
The first thing to check is whether VLC is installed. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source; for 64-bit OBS, the documentation specifically requires 64-bit VLC. If the source is still unavailable, check that the installed VLC architecture matches OBS and consult the current OBS documentation for your operating system and build.

Choose playlist behavior deliberately
- Loop: Leave playlist looping enabled if the program should repeat. Turn it off if the stream should stop playing after the list ends.
- Shuffle: Keep shuffle off for a fixed sequence; enable it if you want the playlist order randomized.
- Preview the exact files: OBS’s file-type list establishes WebM support, not guaranteed playback of every WebM codec combination, audio track, damaged file, or computer configuration. Check the actual files in your scene rather than relying on the extension alone. OBS Project: Media Sources
VLC Video also exposes settings for visibility behavior, network caching, audio tracks, and subtitles. These are available when relevant to your sources; the essential checks for a local playlist are that it plays in the intended order and produces the intended audio.

Keep the local playlist format separate from YouTube ingest
OBS reads and decodes the WebM files as local inputs, then encodes the outgoing live stream. YouTube’s ingest requirements apply to that output—not to the container used by the files in your OBS playlist. For ordinary RTMP ingest, YouTube lists H.264; other ingest protocols have their own requirements and codec options. Check the current requirements for your selected protocol and the corresponding OBS output settings before broadcasting. Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video does not appear: Install VLC, then make sure its architecture matches OBS. In particular, OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- A WebM file will not play or has no sound: The extension alone does not establish that the file’s codecs or audio track will work in your environment. Test the specific file in the OBS scene and check the source’s audio-track settings.
- The playlist stops when it reaches the end: Check the VLC Video source’s loop-playlist setting.
- Files play in an unexpected order: Check whether shuffle is enabled; OBS documents it as off by default.
- OBS previews correctly, but YouTube will not accept the live output: Check the selected YouTube ingest protocol and OBS’s outgoing encoder settings. A WebM playlist does not mean the live output is WebM.
