How to Fix a Black Screen in OBS Studio: Game, Window, and Display Capture

A black OBS screen can come from the wrong source, GPU mismatch, game restrictions, or fullscreen focus behavior. Use the right diagnostic path for Game, Window, or Display Capture.

A black screen in OBS Studio has different fixes depending on what is black and which source you are using. First identify whether the problem is in the preview, the recording or stream, or only when a fullscreen game loses focus. Then match the capture source to the target, check GPU assignment on Windows laptops, and investigate game-specific conflicts. No single setting fixes every black screen.

First identify where the screen turns black

Look at the OBS preview while the target is visible. If the preview is black, check the source itself. If the preview looks right but the recording or stream is black, the issue is elsewhere in the output path and should not be treated automatically as a capture-source problem. If the image disappears only after you minimize a fullscreen game or switch to another window, the game may have stopped rendering while unfocused.

  • In the Sources list, identify whether the black image comes from Game Capture, Window Capture, Display Capture, or a video input.
  • Test with a short recording. For a fullscreen game that vanishes when you switch away, keep OBS on a second monitor if available rather than relying only on the preview.
  • Separate a missing image from stutter or an encoding-overload warning. Those are different troubleshooting branches.

OBS’s Game Capture Troubleshooting and Game Capture Source guides describe the relevant source and game behaviors.

Choose the capture source that fits the target

Source Use it for Important limitation or note
Game Capture DirectX or OpenGL games on Windows. OBS describes it as an efficient way to capture games. It is not available on macOS or Linux.
Window Capture A selected application window; also a useful alternative for games that do not allow the Game Capture hook. Some games work better in windowed or borderless mode.
Display Capture An entire monitor. For the newer Windows capture method, the OBS laptop guide specifies Windows 10 version 1903 or later and OBS 27 or later.
macOS or Linux alternatives On macOS, OBS points to macOS Screen Capture or Display Capture; on Linux, it points to Window Capture. These are source recommendations, not platform-specific permission or Wayland troubleshooting steps.

On Windows, try Game Capture for a game, Window Capture for a particular app, and Display Capture when you need the whole monitor. If the selected source is wrong for the target, changing unrelated settings is unlikely to help. See OBS’s source guide for its platform and source guidance.

Fix a black Game Capture preview on a Windows laptop

A laptop with integrated and discrete GPUs can run OBS on one adapter and a game on another. OBS says that mismatch can prevent Game Capture from capturing the game. Assign the GPU according to the source you use rather than applying one mode to every capture setup.

  1. Close OBS before changing its graphics assignment.
  2. Open Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
  3. Find or add OBS in the app list, open its options, and select High Performance for Game Capture or Window Capture. OBS’s GPU guide recommends Power Saving for Display Capture.
  4. Reopen OBS and the target app, then test the preview and make a short recording.

These assignments address the GPU-selection scenarios described in OBS’s GPU Selection Guide. Display Capture has a separate option on supported systems: OBS says its newer method can capture a display even when OBS and the monitor use different GPUs. If automatic selection fails, try selecting the Windows 10 method manually. The laptop guide’s stated requirements are Windows 10 version 1903 or later and OBS 27 or later; this is not a reason to use the Display Capture GPU assignment for every Game Capture setup. Details are in OBS Laptop Troubleshooting.

Work through game-specific capture and focus problems

Some games restrict the Game Capture hook, and others behave differently depending on display mode. OBS’s troubleshooting guide says certain games, including Destiny 2 and Counter-Strike 2, do not allow OBS to hook in with Game Capture; it recommends trying Window Capture with the game in windowed or borderless fullscreen mode. Because game behavior can vary, treat this as a targeted workaround, not a universal setting.

  • Try Window Capture: Set the game to windowed or borderless mode, then capture its window.
  • Disable conflicts temporarily: Turn off overlays, FPS counters, and monitoring software during diagnosis, then test again. Re-enable them one at a time to identify a conflict.
  • Try administrator mode only when appropriate: OBS lists some games for which running OBS as administrator may be needed. It is a game-specific troubleshooting step, not a required first step for every black screen.
  • Consider the graphics API: Some DX12 games can have capture or crash issues. If the game offers a DX11 option, OBS suggests trying it.
  • Account for focus behavior: Some fullscreen games stop rendering when minimized or when you switch away. Verify with a test recording or leave OBS visible on a second monitor.

Check the game-specific notes in OBS Game Capture Troubleshooting before changing several settings at once.

Fix a black Display Capture source

If Display Capture is the failing source on Windows, check that the system meets the requirements for OBS’s newer capture method: Windows 10 version 1903 or later and OBS 27 or later. If OBS’s automatic method does not capture the display, open the Display Capture source properties and try the Windows 10 method manually, then test again. These requirements and the manual-selection suggestion are from OBS’s Laptop Troubleshooting guide.

When the image is present but OBS stutters or reports overload

A visible but choppy image, or an encoding-overload warning, is a performance problem rather than a black-source preview. OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render scenes. Reduce competing GPU demand and test again:

Quick troubleshooting map

What you see First checks
Game Capture is black on a Windows laptop Confirm the source targets a game; check OBS and game GPU assignment; try Window Capture and windowed or borderless mode if the game blocks the hook.
Only one game causes the black screen Check OBS’s game-specific notes; temporarily disable overlays or monitoring tools; try administrator mode only if that game requires it, or try DX11 if available.
Fullscreen game disappears when you switch away Test-record while the game is active or keep OBS on a second monitor; the game may stop rendering while unfocused.
Display Capture is black on a supported Windows setup Check the Windows and OBS versions; try the Windows 10 capture method manually if automatic selection fails.
Image appears but is choppy or overloaded Reduce GPU demand, cap the game frame rate, close competing apps, and simplify the scene.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate option from OBS game capture: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection left on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not capture a live camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
