Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf OBS Game Capture shows a black screen, first make sure the source is set to the running game and visible in your scene. Then check whether another overlay or recorder is conflicting, OBS and the game are using different GPUs, or the game stops rendering when minimized. If Game Capture cannot hook the game, try Window Capture; use Display Capture only when its compatibility requirements fit your setup.
Check the Game Capture source and target
-
In OBS, select the scene that should contain the game and confirm the Game Capture source is present and visible in the Sources list.

Make a short test recording and play it back. A black OBS preview while the game is minimized does not necessarily mean the recording is black.
OBS describes Game Capture as a Windows source for DirectX or OpenGL games. Some games cannot be hooked by it, so a correctly selected source is not a guarantee that every title will work.
Restart OBS with administrator access if the game requires it
Some games require OBS Studio to run as administrator to capture correctly. Close OBS, right-click its shortcut, choose Run as administrator, and test the game again. This is a game-dependent troubleshooting step, not a setting every user needs to enable.

Temporarily check for overlays and capture conflicts
Overlays, performance displays, monitoring tools, and other recording applications can interfere with Game Capture. Close them temporarily, then test again. OBS specifically identifies MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner as prevalent conflicts; other overlays may also be involved.
Some antivirus or firewall products can interfere as well. Rather than disabling security software indiscriminately, check its settings and allow OBS if it is being blocked. Re-enable or restore any temporary changes after testing.
Distinguish a minimized-game preview from a failed capture
Some fullscreen games stop rendering when you Alt+Tab away. In that case, the OBS preview may turn black while the game is minimized even though capture works while the game is active. Test with a recording and review the file, or use a second monitor to keep OBS visible while the game remains open.

For certain games, OBS recommends switching the game to windowed or borderless fullscreen and using Window Capture instead of Game Capture. This changes the capture method; it is not evidence that the recording itself is broken.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check the game’s graphics API and compatibility
OBS documents that certain DirectX 12 games may crash with OBS or show frame problems. If the game offers the option, try launching it with DirectX 11 and test again. OBS lists this as a workaround for Fortnite, among other examples. Its guide also names Window Capture alternatives for games including Counter-Strike 2 and Destiny 2. These are examples, not a complete compatibility list, so consult the game’s current settings and OBS guidance for title-specific advice.
Fix a GPU mismatch on a laptop or multi-GPU PC
A laptop may use integrated graphics for desktop work and a discrete GPU for games. OBS says Game Capture may fail if OBS runs on the integrated GPU while the game runs on the discrete GPU. On Windows 10 version 1809 or later and Windows 11, the OBS laptop guide explains assigning OBS to the high-performance GPU for Game Capture or Window Capture.

If the issue remains, check the game’s graphics assignment too. OBS and the game need compatible GPU assignments for Game Capture to work reliably.
Display Capture is a separate fallback
Display Capture records the monitor rather than hooking the game. OBS describes a cross-GPU Display Capture method for Windows 10 version 1903 or later with OBS 27 or later. If automatic selection does not work, its laptop guide says to try the Windows 10 capture method manually. A yellow border may appear with this method. These requirements apply to that Display Capture approach; they are not requirements for ordinary Game Capture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose another source when Game Capture cannot hook the game
| Source | What it captures | When to try it | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game Capture | A supported Windows DirectX or OpenGL game. | Use it for a game-specific capture; OBS describes it as efficient. | Some games, older titles, and emulators may not work with the game-hooking process. |
| Window Capture | A selected application window. | Try it for games OBS identifies as incompatible with Game Capture, including some cases where windowed or borderless mode is recommended. | The game window must be available to capture; behavior varies by game. |
| Display Capture | The selected display. | Use it when capturing the whole screen is acceptable or when following OBS’s cross-GPU laptop method. | It includes the display rather than only the game. The cited cross-GPU method requires OBS 27 or later and Windows 10 version 1903 or later. |
For older games and emulators that do not work with modern hooking, OBS suggests trying Window Capture or Display Capture. Display Capture can include unrelated desktop content, so check what will be visible before recording or streaming.
Console video is a different capture problem
A console’s video is external input, not a PC game window. OBS describes using a Video Capture Source with a capture device, or capturing a console remote-play application window. Remote play depends on a sufficiently fast network connection. A capture card is relevant to that console workflow, not a general fix for a black PC Game Capture source.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from prerecorded videos, that is separate from fixing OBS Game Capture. StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping on YouTube from the cloud: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
