First check whether the picture is already black in OBS. If it is, troubleshoot the active scene, source, capture target, or operating-system permission. If OBS preview and a local recording look right but the YouTube stream is black, check YouTube’s Live Control Room and the outbound stream path instead. That split helps avoid changing bitrate or buying hardware when the fault is elsewhere.
Find where the picture disappears
- Check the active OBS scene and preview. Confirm the expected video source is present, enabled, and visible in the active scene. Make sure the selected camera, display, window, application, or game is the one you intended to capture.
- Record a short local test. Start a brief recording in OBS, then play it back. If the preview and recording are black, the problem is likely before transmission: investigate the source, target, or permissions. YouTube also recommends checking the encoder and local archive when diagnosing stream trouble (YouTube: Troubleshoot your live stream).
- If the local picture is fine, check YouTube. Open the Live Control Room and inspect its preview and any diagnostic messages. Check the encoder’s output and test the outbound internet connection if the encoder output looks healthy. YouTube treats encoder/source problems and outbound connection problems as separate possibilities.
Do not treat a bitrate change as a universal fix for a black picture. Bitrate and network checks matter when investigating delivery problems, but a disabled source or blocked capture permission needs a different fix.

Fix the OBS source that is black
Display, window, or application capture
For an entire monitor, use the appropriate Display Capture source and verify its selected display. OBS marks legacy Display Capture as deprecated on macOS 13 and later; use the macOS Screen Capture source instead. Camera or capture-device source
Check that the camera or capture device is added to the active scene, enabled, and selected as the source’s device. On macOS, OBS lists Camera permission separately from Screen Recording permission; camera and capture-card sources may need Camera access. If the source is still blank, verify its target and follow any operating-system prompts. The exact recovery sequence can vary by macOS version.

On macOS, open the OBS Studio menu and choose Review App Permissions. Enable Screen Recording for desktop, window, and app capture. OBS also identifies separate Camera and Microphone permissions for webcam/capture-card video and audio. After changing access, retest the source and follow any prompts macOS presents. Game Capture
Use this branch only if the podcast scene is capturing a game. OBS notes that some games require OBS to run as administrator; overlays or FPS counters can conflict; and some games work better in windowed or borderless mode with Window Capture. On laptops and all-in-one computers with multiple GPUs, make sure OBS and the game use the high-performance GPU. Check OBS’s Game Capture troubleshooting guide for the game-specific setup rather than applying these workarounds to a camera or display source.

Separate a black source from an overloaded stream
If the picture is static and black, start with the source, target, and permissions—not performance tuning. If the output is choppy or the whole scene becomes unstable, OBS may be short of GPU resources for composing and rendering scenes. Simplify demanding sources, free up GPU resources, or reduce output resolution or frame rate. OBS describes these as performance measures for an overloaded setup, not a default remedy for a blank camera or display (OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting).

Test the fix before the podcast begins
- Make a short OBS recording and confirm the image is present in playback.
- Start a private or unlisted test stream, then check the Live Control Room preview before going public.
- Confirm that the image also appears on the YouTube watch page and monitor audio and video quality during the test.
YouTube recommends testing the stream and checking the Live Control Room preview before starting. Its computer livestream tips also say, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” That is a reason to diagnose and test your existing setup before shopping; it is not a guarantee that every device will work (YouTube live streaming tips – Computer; Troubleshoot your live stream).
