How to Loop Church Sermon Videos from Google Drive in OBS for YouTube

To loop a church sermon video from Google Drive through OBS to YouTube, first make the video available on the computer, add it to an OBS scene as a Media Source, enable Loop, then connect OBS to the stream created in YouTube Studio. For several videos in sequence, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. For a service, prepare an offline-ready copy and test the playback boundary before going live.

1. Make the Google Drive video available to OBS

OBS’s Media Source plays a file on the computer. Google Drive for desktop can expose Drive files to the computer in streaming or mirroring mode, but the two modes behave differently.

Access method What it means for the stream
Stream files with Drive for desktop Uses less local disk space, but files not saved for offline use require internet access. Drive for desktop must be running to access streamed files.
Mirror My Drive Keeps a complete local copy of My Drive files and makes them available offline, at the cost of local storage.
Download a local copy Provides a file directly on the computer for OBS to play. Downloading may be unavailable if the owner has disabled downloads for viewers or commenters.

Google says Shared Drives can only be streamed, not mirrored. For the exact current Drive for desktop options, see Google’s guide to streaming and mirroring files.

Prepare the video before the service

  1. In Drive for desktop, choose whether to stream or mirror files. If you stream, mark the sermon video available offline, or download a permitted copy to a local folder.
  2. Confirm the file is accessible on the computer before opening OBS. In streaming mode, offline availability still depends on Drive for desktop being open and the account being connected, according to Google’s advanced guidance.
  3. Check the video’s audio and picture in a local player. If the owner’s sharing settings prevent downloading, ask for an authorized copy or access method rather than trying to bypass the restriction. Google also notes that a file may be temporarily restricted after many views or downloads in a short period. See Google’s download guidance.

Using a file that is already available offline is a practical way to avoid relying on a just-in-time cloud fetch during the service; it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback.

2. Loop one sermon video in OBS

  1. Open OBS and select the scene that will feed the YouTube stream.
  2. In the Sources box, click the + button and choose Media Source.
  3. Create a new source or select an existing one, then use Browse to choose the sermon video file.
  4. In the source properties, turn on Loop, then click OK. OBS defines this option as specifying whether the file plays again after playback has completed. The setting is documented in the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.
  5. Confirm the source appears in the preview and that the audio meter responds when the video plays. If the scene has other sources, check their order and visibility so the sermon is not covered.

OBS lists built-in Media Source support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM. A listed format is not a guarantee that every file will play on every system; codecs and the specific file can matter.

3. Loop several sermon clips in order

For a sequence of videos, use OBS’s VLC Video source instead of creating a separate Media Source for every clip.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source to appear; if OBS is 64-bit, VLC must also be 64-bit.
  2. In the Sources box, click + and choose VLC Video.
  3. Add the sermon clips in the order you want them to play. Leave shuffle off if the order matters.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist in the source properties. OBS documents this option as on by default, but verify it rather than relying on the default.
  5. Preview the complete sequence, including the transition from the final clip back to the first. Listen for gaps, missing audio or an unintended pause.

4. Connect OBS to a YouTube livestream

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a livestream using the encoder workflow. YouTube’s steps and current eligibility details are in its guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
  2. Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
  3. Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the encoder preview to appear in Live Control Room, then click Go live there if YouTube prompts you to do so.
  4. Watch the YouTube preview and check both picture and sound before relying on the stream for the service.

The exact labels and eligibility requirements can vary with YouTube Studio’s interface and the channel’s status. Use the Live Control Room’s current prompts if they differ from the guide.

5. Check the video, audio and YouTube rules

Drive playback resolution is not the livestream limit

Google’s Drive help page states a maximum video playback resolution of 1920 × 1080; that figure applies to playback in Drive, not to OBS or YouTube’s maximum live-stream resolution. Google also warns that internet speed and quality can affect Drive playback. Its supported-format list includes WebM (VP8/Vorbis), MPEG4/3GPP/MOV (H.264/MPEG4 with AAC), AVI (MJPEG/PCM), MPEGPS, WMV, FLV, MTS and OGG, while noting that support can vary by device. See Google’s video storage and playback guidance.

Check rights and stream eligibility

  • Use sermon recordings, music and other material that the church has the rights or permission to livestream. A video being stored in Drive does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it.
  • Review YouTube’s current live-stream eligibility and copyright requirements in YouTube Studio before the service, especially if the recording contains music, licensed media or material from another organization.
  • Keep the video file’s sharing and download permissions intact. If OBS cannot access the file, resolve access with its owner or an authorized administrator.

6. Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
The sermon does not appear in OBS The path points to an unavailable Drive file, or the file is online-only. Open the file from the computer first. Make it available offline in Drive for desktop or use an authorized local download; confirm Drive for desktop is running and signed in if using streamed files.
OBS cannot download the file from Drive The owner may have disabled downloads, or Google may have temporarily restricted a heavily accessed file. Ask the owner for an allowed local copy or access method, or wait and retry if the restriction is temporary. Do not bypass the owner’s permissions.
The clip stops instead of restarting Loop is off on the Media Source. Open that source’s properties and turn on Loop. For a multi-clip source, verify Loop Playlist.
VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check the Sources menu.
The playlist plays clips in an unexpected order Shuffle is on or the files were added in a different order. Turn shuffle off and review the playlist order in the VLC Video source properties.
The picture appears but there is no sound The source’s audio is muted, routed unexpectedly, or the file itself lacks the expected audio. Check the OBS audio mixer while the video plays, inspect mute and monitoring settings, and test the file in a local player before going live.
YouTube shows no encoder preview OBS may not be sending, or the server URL or stream key may not match the current YouTube stream. Confirm OBS is streaming and that its server URL and stream key match the active event in Live Control Room. Re-copy them from the event if necessary; keep the key private.
The scheduled event is not public yet YouTube may be waiting for the operator to start it from Live Control Room. Wait for the encoder preview, then click Go live in Live Control Room when the scheduled-stream workflow requires it.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded sermon videos without leaving a computer on at the church, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not stream from a camera; it plays uploaded videos to YouTube.
