A black screen in a Linode-hosted YouTube loop stream can come from the source video, FFmpeg, the VPS-to-YouTube connection, YouTube ingest, or playback. First compare the video FFmpeg produces with YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and health message; that tells you which boundary to investigate instead of changing settings at random.
Locate where the picture disappears
- Check YouTube’s preview and health message. Open Live Control Room, note the exact health status or error and its timestamp, and look at the preview. YouTube’s dashboard provides stream-health messages and performance metrics (YouTube: Monitor your live stream). Its live-streaming tips also recommend checking the preview before starting and monitoring video quality (YouTube: Live streaming tips).
- Compare YouTube with the encoder’s output. Inspect the source video and, if available, a local recording or other output from the FFmpeg process. If that output is black too, investigate the media file, playlist or input selection, filters, and encoding process. If it is visible locally but black in YouTube’s preview, focus on the stream configuration, format, or outbound connection.
- Check the channel/watch page separately. If Live Control Room shows a picture but the viewer-facing page does not, test the channel or watch page on a separate device. This helps distinguish ingest from playback or viewing issues. YouTube recommends verifying access on channel/watch pages and mobile as part of the end-to-end check (YouTube: Live streaming tips).
Check the source video and FFmpeg output
Confirm the input is the intended file
- Verify that the file path in the FFmpeg command or playlist points to the expected video and that the file exists.
- Check that the service account running FFmpeg can read the file and any playlist or related assets.
- Play the source directly. If it is black there, the stream settings cannot restore picture missing from the source.
Inspect what the process is producing
Review recent FFmpeg logs and, where practical, inspect a local archive or capture of the output. A process that remains running is not proof that it is producing usable video frames. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the quality of sources routed to the encoder, encoder errors, CPU load, and a local archive (YouTube: Live streaming tips).

If the source is visible but the local encoded output is black, check the input selection, filters, and encoding command. Change one relevant setting at a time and inspect the resulting output before restarting the full stream. A healthy-looking process alone is not conclusive: one community operations note describes a silent freeze where an audio demuxer error was eventually identified. That is an anecdote, not evidence that the same fault explains your stream.

Compare the current URL and key
Copy the current stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, then compare them with the values configured for FFmpeg or the service that launches it. YouTube’s setup process uses both values (YouTube: Set up your encoder for live streaming). If the key was reset or exposed, replace it in the encoder configuration. Treat it as a secret: do not paste it into public logs, screenshots, or support posts.

Use the health message to decide whether format is relevant
For YouTube’s specific “incorrect stream format” error, its documented required video and audio codecs are H.264 and AAC (YouTube: Troubleshoot live stream issues). A black picture on its own does not establish that the codec is wrong. Check the exact Live Control Room message and the actual encoded output before re-encoding; otherwise, a format change may leave the real fault untouched.
Check FFmpeg and the Linode service
Inspect the process and recent logs
On the VPS, check whether FFmpeg is running, whether it is reporting errors, and whether it is advancing through the input and producing video frames. Confirm that the command’s input path is valid for the service account. If the loop is managed by systemd, check the unit’s status and recent journal output; a service being “active” does not by itself confirm that its video output is visible.

Linode’s RTMP guide demonstrates checking service status and describes an example architecture (Linode: Streaming Video with Nginx RTMP). The guide dates from 2021, so use it for the operational idea rather than assuming its package versions or endpoints are current.

- If FFmpeg logs show that the input cannot be opened, address the path, permissions, or file first.
- If the local output is black or has no usable frames, investigate the source, command, filters, and system load.
- If local output is visible but YouTube’s preview is black, recheck the current URL/key, the format indicated by YouTube, and the outbound path.
- If YouTube’s preview is healthy but playback elsewhere is not, verify the viewer-facing page on another device before changing the VPS configuration.
Check the VPS upload path
When local video looks correct but delivery to YouTube is unreliable, investigate outbound capacity and stability. Download speed does not establish upload capacity. YouTube recommends allowing 20% above the total stream bitrate requirement (YouTube: Troubleshoot live stream issues). This is YouTube’s recommendation, not a measured performance guarantee. If the encoder appears healthy while viewers report stream problems, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance points toward the outbound connection as a possible area to check.

Measure upload capacity from the VPS or the relevant network path, and compare it with the total bitrate being sent. If capacity is insufficient or unstable, reduce the stream’s bitrate only as a targeted test, then watch Live Control Room’s preview and health indicators. Do not assume that upgrading Linode or switching hosts is the right first fix unless the diagnostics point to a hosting or network limitation.
Verify the complete stream after a fix
- Confirm the source plays correctly and the FFmpeg output contains visible video.
- Check that Live Control Room receives the stream, shows a picture, and reports no unresolved health error.
- Check the channel or watch page from a separate viewer device, including mobile if available.
- Monitor audio and video quality after the change rather than treating a running process as proof of a successful repair.
