Empty the bag, inspect the full zipper, then use the matching repair below.
Inspect the zipper before trying a repair
Lay the backpack flat in good light and empty the affected pocket. A full or compressed bag can put tension on the zipper, while repeated skipped teeth can point to wear. Check the entire zipper for fabric caught in the slider, grit in the teeth or coil, bent or missing teeth, torn zipper tape, and a slider that looks distorted. Do not pull harder to overcome resistance.

If possible, note whether the zipper has a coil or molded-plastic chain. Construction affects which replacement slider will fit; repair kits and sliders are not universally interchangeable.
If the zipper drags or catches on fabric
Free the snag and clear debris
- Gently move the slider back from the snag rather than forcing it forward.
- Ease trapped fabric out of the slider. Brush visible dirt from the teeth or coil with a nylon brush; debris lodged around the slider is a common cause of sticking, according to iFixit’s backpack zipper guide.
- Try moving the slider gently after cleaning. If the chain is intact but still drags, a small amount of zipper lubricant may help. Follow the backpack maker’s care instructions, which can vary by bag.
Lubricant can help with friction on an intact zipper; it cannot repair missing teeth, a damaged slider, or torn tape. Helly Hansen also warns against forcing a stuck zipper because that can make the problem worse (zipper repair guidance).

If the zipper closes but opens behind the slider
When the teeth separate again after the slider passes, the slider may no longer grip both sides of the chain properly. Kipling and Helly Hansen describe careful plier adjustment as an option for a loose slider.
- With the zipper open and accessible, use pliers to make a very small adjustment to the slider.
- Test the zipper gently after each adjustment. Stop if the slider distorts, cracks, or continues to let the teeth separate.
- If careful adjustment does not restore engagement, replace the slider with one that matches the zipper’s type and size. A generic repair kit is not guaranteed to fit.
Do not squeeze hard: excessive pressure can damage the slider. For guidance on slider repair and replacement, see Kipling’s zipper repair page and Helly Hansen’s repair guidance.

- No tools or sewing required: Fix zip isn’t your average zipper repair kit. It’s a replacement zipper slider that you can install without tools or sewing.
- Repair most zippers easily: apparel, backpacks, tents, boats, marine, sleeping bags, purses, jackets, pants, bags, luggage, wetsuits, and more. Works on open-end, closed-end, and invisible/ Watertight zippers.
- Size GUIDE: Small zipper slider: teeth and coil sizes 1-4, medium zipper slider: teeth and coil sizes 5-7, large zipper slider: teeth and coil sizes 8-10
- CHOOSE SIZE: (See Video) check back of broken zipper; most zippers have a size number (1-10) on back of slider. Sizing chart below will determine which FixnZip is right. If zipper doesn’t have number, measure width of zipper teeth in millimeters or inches
If the pull tab is missing
The pull tab is the part you hold; its absence does not necessarily mean the slider has failed. If the slider still moves and joins the teeth, attach a replacement pull tab or use a thin zip tie temporarily, as Kipling suggests. Keep the temporary loop short enough that it will not snag the bag or interfere with the slider. If the slider itself is damaged, replacing the pull alone will not solve the problem.

If the slider came off or the teeth will not align
When the slider has come off one side, or the teeth do not mesh, the repair depends on the zipper construction and where the slider detached. Some re-alignment methods require moving the slider to the end, restoring its position, then sewing a reinforced stop. iFixit’s backpack zipper re-alignment guide lists a needle, thread, and pliers among the materials that may be needed.

Cleaning and lubrication are appropriate only when the zipper chain and tape are intact. A missing tooth, damaged coil, torn tape, or failure that continues after a slider repair calls for repair or replacement rather than more lubricant. A professional can assess whether the slider can be replaced or whether the zipper must be sewn into the backpack.
Also check whether the pocket is under tension. Lowepro notes that compression or tension can contribute to skipped teeth, while persistent problems may indicate wear and a need for replacement (Lowepro support). If the zipper repeatedly separates or derails even after the bag is unloaded, have the chain and attachment inspected.

Choose the repair by the symptom
| What you see | What to try | When to escalate |
|---|---|---|
| Slider drags; teeth and tape look intact | Remove any snag, brush away debris, and try gentle movement. Consider suitable zipper lubricant if friction remains. | If it still catches, inspect for slider or chain damage. |
| Zipper closes, then separates behind the slider | Try only a minimal, controlled slider adjustment with pliers. | Replace the slider with a compatible one or ask a repair professional if adjustment fails. |
| Pull tab is missing, but slider works | Fit a replacement pull or a temporary short loop. | Replace or repair the slider if it does not operate correctly. |
| Slider came off, teeth do not align, teeth are missing, or tape is torn | Do not force the zipper or cut sound material. | Use a construction-specific re-alignment repair or have a tailor or bag repair shop assess the zipper. |
