A YouTube stream that keeps reconnecting has a connection or configuration problem, but the symptom alone does not identify which one. Start by checking OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection status, then read the stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. If OBS is dropping frames, test a lower bitrate and a wired network connection; if YouTube reports a configuration issue, correct the setting it names. Change one thing at a time and observe the result rather than treating any setting as a universal fix.
1. Find out where the failure appears
Watch OBS while the stream reconnects
In OBS, note whether the dropped-frames counter rises and whether its connection indicator degrades at the time of a reconnect. OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; too many dropped frames can disconnect you. That points toward the connection or bitrate, not automatically to a YouTube outage. OBS also says it is “extremely unlikely” for OBS Studio itself to cause dropped frames; that is not a guarantee that software bugs are impossible. OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide was dated September 30, 2024.

Compare the same time in YouTube Live Control Room
Open the stream’s health diagnostics in YouTube Live Control Room and match any warning to the time of the reconnect. YouTube recommends testing before going live, including with audio and video movement similar to the real broadcast, and monitoring stream health during the event. The YouTube LiveStream configuration-issues reference, last updated September 14, 2026 UTC, identifies warnings for bitrate, codec, keyframe frequency, missing or insufficient video, audio, and mismatched primary and backup streams. Use the warning actually shown; a reconnect alone does not establish which component failed.

2. Fix the issue YouTube or OBS identifies
If OBS reports dropped frames, test bitrate and connection stability
Compare your configured bitrate with both YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate and the upload capacity that remains stable over time. A single speed-test result does not establish sustained upload performance. As a troubleshooting starting point, OBS suggests setting bitrate to 75% of total upload speed; this is OBS guidance, not a YouTube rule or a guaranteed safety margin. Reduce bitrate in a measured step, then observe whether dropped frames and reconnects change.

The following are YouTube Help’s currently published recommended bitrate ranges, accessed in 2026. These are encoder bitrate recommendations, not measured internet-speed requirements:
| Output | Codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p, 60 fps | H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Use the row that matches the output you actually configured; do not treat a recommended bitrate as proof that your network can sustain it.

If YouTube flags encoder configuration, match the warning
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube supports multiple video ingest codecs, so check the current settings for the codec you selected rather than assuming every stream must use the same codec. Its encoder settings and bitrate guidance also covers supported video and audio options. If you send primary and backup feeds, check that their parameters match when YouTube reports a mismatch. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP.

3. Test the network path
Isolate Wi-Fi and local equipment
If the encoder is using Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection. OBS identifies Wi-Fi instability as a possible cause of dropped frames, not a guaranteed explanation. Inspect network cables and devices on the route, then restart the modem and router if local network trouble is plausible. Replace a cable only if it appears faulty or a test points to it.
Check software and drivers that can interfere
Temporarily isolate a VPN, firewall or security suite, or bundled network-optimization software if it could be affecting the connection. Check whether network drivers are outdated. Make one change at a time and keep track of whether it changes the OBS counter or YouTube warning; otherwise, you will not know which test mattered.

Escalate with useful evidence
If these local checks do not resolve the issue, contact your ISP. Congestion or a routing problem beyond your home network may be outside your control. Give support the reconnect times, OBS symptoms, and corresponding YouTube health messages so the problem can be investigated against the route and time involved.
4. Test before relying on a 24/7 schedule
A 24/7 schedule does not have a special encoder setting in the cited YouTube guidance. It does make monitoring and testing important: run a test with representative audio and video movement, watch OBS and Live Control Room together, and note whether a change improves the stream over a meaningful period. There is no official reconnect-frequency statistic in these sources, so a reconnect by itself cannot be compared with a published “normal” rate.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you stream uploaded videos rather than a live camera, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
