For Netflix, the service recommends a stable connection of 15 Mbps or higher for UHD/4K; that is Netflix’s recommendation, not a universal target for every streaming service.
First, find out where the problem is
Compare playback across apps and devices before changing router settings. These checks help narrow the cause, but they are clues rather than proof: a service outage or device-specific fault can affect the pattern.

- Try another app on the same TV or streaming device. If other apps play normally, check the affected service’s playback guidance and make sure its app is current.
- Try the affected service on another device connected to the same home network. If several devices or services buffer, look more closely at the connection, router, household internet use, or ISP.
- Temporarily pause other internet activity. Prime Video recommends pausing activity on other devices while troubleshooting. Retry the stream to see whether reduced network use changes playback.
Check the connection on the device that is buffering
A speed test on a phone or computer may not reflect the route or Wi-Fi conditions experienced by the TV. When available, use the streaming app’s network check on the affected TV or device. Netflix supports a network check in its app on TV-connected devices and directs mobile and computer users to Fast.com.

A single speed result is only a snapshot: fluctuations, Wi-Fi interference, device software, or service-side conditions can still cause buffering. - If the result is below Netflix’s recommendation, pause other household internet use and test again.
- If results remain lower than expected for your connection, note where and how you tested before contacting your ISP.
- Do not treat a fast result from a different device as proof that the TV has a stable connection.
Improve the Wi-Fi route before buying equipment
Try simple placement changes one at a time, then replay the same stream. This makes it easier to tell whether a change helped.
- Move the router and streaming device closer together if practical.
- Place the router in an open, elevated spot, such as a shelf or desk, rather than on the floor or inside a cabinet.
- Keep the router away from appliances and other wireless devices where possible.
- Avoid placing the router or TV behind metal, in a recess, or where walls and other obstructions block the signal.
Netflix recommends closer placement and an open, elevated router location; YouTube also advises keeping a TV within router range and avoiding interference or obstructions such as metal. Restart the device and network
- Close the streaming app and restart the TV or streaming device.
- For Netflix’s TV troubleshooting sequence, unplug the modem and, if separate, the router from power for 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem and router. Wait until their indicator lights settle, then try playback again.

Update software and check for service-specific issues
Install available updates for the TV or streaming device and for the streaming app. The exact update path varies by device, so use its settings or manufacturer’s support instructions.

If the problem is limited to Prime Video, check its specific playback guidance rather than assuming Wi-Fi is the cause. Amazon notes that simultaneous use of the same account can limit playback of a title; VPN or proxy use and incorrect device date or time can also matter for certain playback errors. These are service-specific checks, not the default explanation for general Wi-Fi buffering. Consult Prime Video Help.
On hotel, café, school, hotspot, cellular, or satellite internet, network policy or connection capability may affect video playback. Netflix notes that some public networks block video services; see its buffering troubleshooting page.

Use Ethernet as a diagnostic, if your device supports it
If the TV or streaming device has an Ethernet port, connect it directly to the router and retry the same stream. Check the device’s ports first; some setups may require an adapter, and compatibility depends on the exact device.

If playback is stable over Ethernet but not Wi-Fi, wireless coverage or interference becomes a more likely area to investigate. That comparison is suggestive, not proof: a wired connection cannot fix a weak broadband connection, service outage, or device fault. Netflix recommends telling your ISP whether the device connects by Wi-Fi or direct cable in its buffering guidance.

What to tell your ISP if buffering continues
Contact your ISP if the connection tests below expectations or the problem persists across devices or services. Give them useful observations rather than only saying that streaming is slow:
- When the buffering happens and which service and device are affected.
- Whether other devices or streaming services on the home network also struggle.
- The speed-check result, including which device performed the check and where.
- Whether the affected TV or streaming device uses Wi-Fi or a direct Ethernet connection.
Netflix says an ISP may be able to check for area outages, common modem or router problems, and incorrect network settings. Its guidance is at TV show or movie loads slowly or keeps buffering.
