How to find your Google TV remote from the Google Home app

If your Google TV remote has slipped behind the couch cushions, the Google Home app can help you locate it—by triggering a sound or alert from the remote.

This guide walks you through the exact steps, what must be true for the feature to work, and what to try when it doesn’t.

What you can (and can’t) do from the Google Home app

The Google Home app can trigger a remote-finding action for supported Google TV remotes that are paired to your Google TV device. In practice, this starts an audible sound on the remote so you can track it down.

Google TV Streamer 4K - Fast Streaming Entertainment on Your Device with Voice Search Remote - Watch Movies, Shows, Live, and Netflix in HDR - Smart Home Control - 32 GB of Storage - Hazel
  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
  • See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

It won’t help if the remote has no power, isn’t paired to the active Google TV device you’re controlling, or the remote model doesn’t support finding. Also, the feature typically relies on Bluetooth link behavior—so it may fail if the remote is too far away or asleep under certain conditions.

Prerequisites: make sure your devices are eligible

Before you try the steps, confirm these items to avoid wasted time.

1) Your Google TV device must support remote-finding

In most setups, this works with Google TV devices that are designed to work with Google TV remotes (for example, Chromecast with Google TV-class devices). If you’re not sure, check the remote model name/number on the back or in the remote’s documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2) You must be signed into the same Google account

Open the Google Home app on your phone and verify you’re using the same Google account that’s linked to your Google TV home.

3) The remote needs power (and enough battery)

If the remote’s battery is dead, it can’t play the alert sound. Replace batteries (or verify charging if your model is rechargeable) and try again.

4) Your phone needs the right permissions and app health

On mobile, the Google Home app may require Bluetooth permissions and background access to reach devices reliably. Battery saver or aggressive task killers can interfere.

Find your Google TV remote (main method)

From the Google Home app, you’ll start a remote-finding action from the device tile (your Google TV device) rather than from the general home screen.

Android (Google Home app)

Use this flow on Android phones when the feature is available.

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. On the home screen, tap your Google TV device tile (for example, your Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV built-in device).
  3. Look for an option like Find your remote, Find remote, or a similar remote-location control.
  4. Tap the Find action and wait 5–10 seconds.
  5. Listen for the remote sound, then move toward the source.

If you don’t see any “find remote” control on the device tile, go to the troubleshooting section to confirm eligibility and pairing status.

iPhone and iPad (Google Home app)

This is the same idea on iOS, just with iPhone UI labels.

  1. Open the Google Home app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your Google TV device tile.
  3. Find and tap Find remote (or a similarly worded remote-finding control).
  4. Wait for the remote alert sound to start.
  5. Follow the sound and locate the remote.

If the control is missing, it’s usually due to app/device compatibility, permissions, or the remote not being paired to that specific Google TV device.

Choose the right device: which TV or speaker the remote is paired to

Many homes have multiple Google TV devices (for example, living room and bedroom). The Google Home app’s “find remote” action must target the correct one.

If you have more than one Google TV device, repeat the steps from the device tile you think the remote belongs to. If you’re testing from the wrong tile, you’ll start the search on the wrong pairing and won’t hear anything.

Troubleshooting when Find my remote doesn’t work

If the action fails silently or you can’t find the remote-finding control, work through these checks in order.

Remote isn’t being detected

  • Confirm you’re on the correct Google TV device tile. If your home has multiple TVs, the remote is tied to one.
  • Check the remote battery. Low or dead battery is the most common cause.
  • Bring the phone closer to the TV. Some connections degrade with distance or interference.
  • Open the Google TV device interface first. Start the Google TV screen (via the app or by turning on the TV) and try again.

The remote makes no sound

  • Wait longer than you think. Give the action 10–15 seconds in case the remote wakes slowly.
  • Try again once the remote is awake. If the remote is sleeping, press a button on the remote (if possible) or ensure the TV remote connection is active.
  • Test another remote action. If volume/mute or power controls also don’t work, the remote’s connection is likely down.

Battery or Bluetooth issues

Remote finding uses the remote’s ability to respond. If the remote uses replaceable batteries, swap them even if they seem “not completely dead.” If your remote is rechargeable, confirm it has charge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Bluetooth-related behavior, keep the phone reasonably near the TV and avoid extreme background restrictions. Also make sure the remote isn’t paired to a different Google TV device in the same home.

Permissions, location, and background restrictions

If you can’t reliably trigger remote finding, verify these settings.

  • Bluetooth permission: Ensure Google Home can access Bluetooth.
  • Background app refresh: On iOS, allow background refresh for Google Home so it can maintain device connection.
  • Battery saver: On Android, disable battery optimization for Google Home for a quick test.
  • App updates: Update Google Home and your Google TV software so the feature stays supported.

Alternative ways to locate the remote

If the remote-finding button doesn’t appear, you still have a few practical options.

Use the physical remote buttons or TV controls

When the remote is misplaced but not far away, you can sometimes find it indirectly—turn on the TV using other controls (like the TV’s physical buttons or a paired controller) and listen for the remote’s last-known behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your TV has on-screen device controls in its quick settings (and your remote isn’t controlling it), you may still be able to navigate without the missing remote, then concentrate on locating it separately.

Use voice search to test connectivity

If you have a voice-enabled assistant on the Google TV device (or a nearby smart speaker), try voice commands to confirm the TV can communicate with your account and devices. If voice works but remote-finding doesn’t, the problem is more likely remote power/pairing than account or network.

Check for lost remote pairing with another Google TV device

If your remote was recently moved between rooms or TVs, it may now be paired to a different Google TV device. Use Google Home to check which device tile has the remote controls working.

Once you identify the correct TV tile, repeat the “Find remote” action from that tile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Looking for the control on the wrong screen. The find option should be inside the specific Google TV device tile, not just the general app home.
  • Assuming batteries are fine. Even “mostly charged” batteries can fail the remote speaker alert.
  • Forgetting multiple TVs. If you have both a bedroom and living room Google TV, always target the correct device.
  • Running battery saver or task killers. This can prevent the app from reaching the remote at the right moment.

FAQs

Why don’t I see Find remote in the Google Home app?

Most commonly, the feature isn’t supported by your specific remote/TV pairing, the Google Home app hasn’t recognized the remote on that device tile, or you’re signed into the wrong Google account. Battery and pairing problems can also hide the control’s availability.

Can I find the remote if it’s very far away?

Usually, the remote-finding behavior relies on a short-range connection (commonly Bluetooth-like). If you’re in another room or outside a large area, the remote may not receive the trigger.

What if I trigger Find remote and the sound is faint?

Faint sound often points to low battery or a remote speaker issue. Replace batteries and try again. Also, move toward the TV and look for the remote using sound directionality.

Does this work on every Google TV remote?

No. Remote-finding support depends on the remote model and the Google TV device pairing behavior. If your remote doesn’t support the feature, the Google Home app may not show the “Find remote” control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will restoring factory settings on the TV affect remote finding?

Yes. Resetting can break pairing and account associations, so you may need to re-add the Google TV device and ensure the remote is paired correctly again before “Find remote” works.

Bottom Line

To find your Google TV remote from the Google Home app, open your specific Google TV device tile, tap the remote-finding option (for example, Find remote), and then locate the alert sound. Most failures come down to battery/power, wrong device selection, unsupported remote models, or app/device connection permissions.

If the control is missing or the remote won’t sound, verify eligibility on that device tile, replace batteries, and check Bluetooth/background permissions on Android or iOS.
