To find out why a YouTube live stream process stopped on Ubuntu, first identify how it was launched, then compare its application or supervisor logs with kernel messages and YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health errors. The player going offline alone does not show whether the encoder exited, the host terminated it, or YouTube stopped receiving usable video.
Start by preserving the incident details
Before restarting services or rotating logs, note when the stream disappeared, including the time zone; the Ubuntu release; the encoder and version; and whether the machine rebooted. If the incident is still under investigation, capture relevant logs before changing the system. Convert timestamps to one time zone before comparing them.

Find the logs for the way the encoder was started
A systemd unit, interactive shell, container, or other supervisor can send output to different places. Use the systemd journal only if that unit managed the process.

If systemd managed the stream

Check the unit and its recent state:
systemctl status <unit>Replace
<unit>with the actual unit name. Look for the active or failed state, exit status, signal, restart count, and the final messages shown. -
Read the journal for the incident window:
sudo journalctl -u <unit> --since "2026-10-03 20:00:00" --until "2026-10-03 23:00:00" --no-pagerReplace the example dates and times with your incident window. Ubuntu documentation uses
journalctl -u lxdas an example of filtering the journal for a service.
The last application output, systemd’s stop or restart message, and the recorded exit status can help distinguish a normal stop from an unexpected exit. Do not assume this journal includes a process that the unit did not launch or supervise.

If a shell, container, or another supervisor launched it
- Interactive terminal: inspect the terminal output, if it is still available, and the logging destination configured by the command or launcher.
- Container: inspect the container runtime’s logs and status as well as any host-level messages.
- Another supervisor: inspect that supervisor’s own logs and process-exit record.
When those records are missing or have been rotated, the original exit reason may no longer be recoverable.
Check kernel and host events around the same time
Application logs may not explain a termination caused by the host. Check kernel messages for memory pressure or OOM events, device resets, kernel errors, and security denials:
sudo dmesg -T | tail -n 250
sudo journalctl -k --since "2026-10-03 20:00:00" --until "2026-10-03 23:00:00" --no-pagerAdjust the journal time range to match the incident. dmesg displays the kernel ring buffer. On Ubuntu 20.10 and later, access is restricted by default to privileged users with CAP_SYSLOG; using sudo is appropriate for this check.

Check for AppArmor denials
AppArmor denial messages can appear in dmesg and other logs that collect kernel messages. Entries can identify the operation, profile, requested path or name, and process ID or command. Ubuntu’s AppArmor documentation cautions that explicit AppArmor denies do not produce a log entry, so the absence of a denial message does not conclusively rule out policy involvement.

Ubuntu 22.04 release notes say systemd-oomd shipped by default on Ubuntu Desktop to help avoid overload before the kernel OOM killer acts, and mention oomctl for checking OOMD status. This is specific to that release and edition; do not assume it is present on every Ubuntu installation.
Compare local evidence with YouTube stream health
Open the relevant stream in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect stream-health messages for the time the local process stopped. YouTube says these messages include timestamps and distinguishes critical red errors from moderate yellow errors. Match each message to the application, supervisor, and kernel logs rather than treating it as proof of a local process exit.

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. An ingest or format error while the encoder is still running points the investigation toward its output, stream URL or protocol, codec, and network path. It does not, by itself, explain why an Ubuntu process exited.

Check whether the encoder is actually gone or merely unable to deliver a usable stream. A supervisor’s exit record and the process state are stronger evidence of local termination than the YouTube player going offline alone.

Then correlate those with kernel and host messages.
- Encoder still running, but YouTube reports an ingest or format problem: inspect encoder output and settings, the stream URL or protocol, and the network path.
- Operator or scheduled stop: look for an explicit stop command, systemd stop, scheduled shutdown, or reboot in the local records.
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe ending a stream by stopping content from the encoder and state that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Archiving is not an explanation for why the local process stopped; use the process and supervisor records to establish that.

Test the network hypothesis if the process is still alive
If the encoder remains running while YouTube stops receiving usable content, check outbound upload capacity, packet loss or interruptions, and recent network changes. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth, with 20% headroom, and warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. Compare the configured total bitrate with the connection’s available upload capacity; a connection that cannot sustain it can interrupt delivery even if the process has not exited.
Use the evidence to narrow the cause
