If you need a broader view of battery condition and usage history, Windows also provides the powercfg /batteryreport command.
Check battery use by app in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Select Battery usage.
- Review Battery usage per app and look for apps with notable battery use, including background use.
This Settings view is the direct built-in way to investigate app-level battery use; you do not need a separate monitoring app for this check. Its figures are useful for spotting likely contributors, but they do not by themselves establish that an app is faulty or that it is the only cause of short battery life.

Check whether an app is running in the background
Some apps provide a background-activity control from the Battery usage list. Select the app’s More options menu, then choose Manage background activity. If the option is available, set Let this app run in the background to one of these choices:
- Always: Allows background activity.
- Power optimized: Lets Windows balance power savings with periodic updates and notifications.
- Never: Stops background activity while the app is inactive. The app may then stop sending background notifications or updates.
Not every app offers this setting. Microsoft Support explains that background activity lets apps send notifications, sync data, and stay up to date: Manage background activity for apps in Windows.

Use the battery report for broader diagnostics
The Battery usage per app screen is the place to start for app attribution. For additional battery and usage information, generate Windows’ HTML battery report. It complements the app list rather than replacing it.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Enter
powercfg /batteryreportand press Enter. - Read the saved HTML report path shown in the Command Prompt window, then open that file in a browser.
- Start with the Installed battery, Recent usage, and Battery usage sections.
Microsoft’s instructions are in How to create a battery report in Windows. The report is useful when you want a wider view of battery capacity and usage history; it is not a prerequisite for checking which apps appear in Settings.

Reduce battery drain after identifying likely contributors
Review Energy recommendations
In Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations. Depending on the PC, Windows may suggest changes to power mode, brightness, screen-off timing, sleep timing, or other settings. The recommendations can vary with device capabilities, sensors, and whether the laptop is plugged in or running on battery. See Microsoft’s Energy recommendations in Windows 11.

Windows power modes include Best power efficiency, Balanced, and Best performance. Best power efficiency prioritizes saving battery; Best performance prioritizes performance. Choose according to what you are doing and whether you are on battery or plugged in. The available choices can depend on the PC and its manufacturer. The steps above are for Windows 11. Windows 10 settings and available controls can differ by version and hardware, and Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025.
