Open Settings > Battery to see which apps and system activities used the most iPhone battery. The list ranks usage; it does not provide a separate ranking of individual settings. Check the activity details and Apple’s suggestions to decide what may be worth changing.
Find battery use by app and system activity
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Review App and System Activity Usage for the battery-use percentage attributed to each app or system task.
- Tap View All Battery Usage to inspect recent daily usage. Select a day, then tap an app to see more battery and activity detail.
Apple’s iOS 26 guide describes the section as a way to understand what is using battery by listing the percentage used by each app and system task. The menu labels and history views can differ on older iOS versions. Apple’s Daily Usage chart requires iOS 26 or later, according to its battery-drain troubleshooting guidance.

Read the activity details in context
A high-ranked entry is a clue, not proof that an app or setting is faulty. Compare the percentage with the app’s activity type, how long you used it, and what you were doing during the period shown.

- On-screen activity: The app was open and visible. Longer screen time can help explain higher use.
- Background activity: The app did work while not visible. Directions, music playback, photo syncing, and mail fetching are examples Apple identifies.
- Cellular coverage or low signal: Using an app in a low-signal area can take more power; the phone may also use energy searching for Wi-Fi or cellular service.
- Notifications: Notifications can wake the iPhone to check for new information. If an app’s notifications are unnecessary, changing its notification settings may reduce those wake-ups.
When using internet apps, Apple says Wi-Fi generally uses less power than cellular, and recommends using a strong signal when possible. Consider that alongside your own usage rather than treating any one activity label as a universal cause.

Check Daily Usage and iOS suggestions
Depending on your iOS version and what the phone detects, Settings > Battery may show Daily Usage comparisons, insights, or suggestions above the usage section. Apple’s examples include enabling Auto-Brightness or Auto-Lock and reducing high brightness. These are prompts to consider, not a requirement to change every setting; choose what fits how you use your iPhone.
Check battery condition separately
Battery usage and battery health answer different questions. The usage list shows where power went; Battery Health helps assess the battery’s condition.

- iPhone 15 models and later: Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Apple documents capacity and details such as cycle count, manufacture date, and first-use date.
- iPhone 14 and earlier: Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.
If Battery Health shows Service, Apple says to consider battery replacement and directs users to Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. A battery needing service is a different issue from an app appearing near the top of the usage list.
