1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo check whether a USB device is disrupting your Wi-Fi, compare the connection with that device unplugged and reconnected while keeping your location, network task, and other conditions as steady as possible. Repeat the comparison one device at a time. If the problem consistently follows a particular device, try moving the Wi-Fi receiver, antenna, device, or cable farther apart. Symptoms alone do not prove USB interference: drivers, router settings, and other sources can cause similar problems.
Why a USB device could affect Wi-Fi
Some USB 3.0 equipment can emit broadband radio-frequency noise that overlaps the 2.4–2.5 GHz range. Noise can radiate from a computer’s USB connector, the peripheral, or its cable. If a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi receiver is nearby, that noise can reduce the receiver’s signal-to-noise ratio and sensitivity, potentially reducing wireless performance.

Intel’s April 2012 technical paper describes this mechanism and measurements from particular test setups. In one setup, connecting an external USB 3.0 hard drive raised the measured 2.4 GHz noise floor by nearly 20 dB. The paper also observed mouse lag beginning at three feet in its tested configuration. Those results illustrate that proximity can matter; they are not universal thresholds or proof that a given USB device is causing your Wi-Fi problem.

- Choose a repeatable Wi-Fi task. For example, use the same call, download, or location-specific connection test. Note where you are, whether the connection is on 2.4 GHz if you know, and what the problem looks like. Keep the router, task, and other conditions as consistent as practical.
- Unplug one suspected USB device and retest. Do not disconnect several devices at once; otherwise, you will not know which change mattered.
- Reconnect that device and repeat the same task. If possible, repeat the unplugged/connected comparison again. A symptom that reliably disappears when one device is disconnected and returns when it is reconnected is stronger evidence than a single before-and-after observation.
- Test other connected devices individually. Give particular attention to USB 3.x storage devices, flash drives, hubs, and nearby cables when they are close to the Wi-Fi antenna or receiver. Intel directly tested an external USB 3.0 hard drive and discusses a flash drive, but that does not establish that every device in these categories will cause interference.
A device may be relevant even when it is not actively transferring data: in Intel’s particular mouse test, the observed effect was similar with the external drive connected and with data being written to it. Treat that as a finding about the tested setup, not a rule for all hardware.

Check whether distance and placement change the result
If a repeatable comparison points to one device, change only its placement or the receiver’s placement and rerun the same task. Move an external Wi-Fi dongle or antenna away from the USB 3.x port, cable, and peripheral. If your computer offers ports in different locations, try a port farther from the receiver. Keep track of each arrangement so you can compare like with like.
Intel tested a wireless mouse dongle stacked directly above a USB 3.0 port and found no response at the tested distances. In that setup, moving the dongle to the opposite side of the notebook with a USB 2.0 extension cable produced an OK response at two, three, and five feet. The result demonstrates that placement can help in some configurations, not that a cable guarantees a Wi-Fi fix or removes all interference.

- Supports Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP/ Mac OS X 10.9-10.14
You can try repositioning a receiver you already own before buying anything. If moving it helps, a USB 2.0 extension cable may be a practical way to keep a wireless dongle farther from a USB 3.x device; Intel’s example concerned a mouse receiver, so the outcome for your Wi-Fi adapter will depend on your equipment and setup.
When the USB test does not explain the problem
If unplugging and repositioning devices do not produce a repeatable change, look beyond USB. Intel’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance, last reviewed February 7, 2025, lists possible causes including outdated or incorrect drivers, network configuration, adapter settings, access-point or router configuration, and interference.

- Check whether other devices have the same problem in the same location. If they do, that points away from a single computer’s USB setup.
- Check whether the problem occurs only on one Wi-Fi band or network, if you have access to that information.
- Review the Wi-Fi adapter’s driver and settings, along with the router or access point’s configuration.
- Consider other local interference sources rather than assuming a USB device is responsible.
For broader checks, see Intel’s Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting guide. Its general advice can help investigate other causes, but it cannot identify a particular USB device as the culprit.
