Computer terminology is the vocabulary used to describe computing concepts, systems, methods, and practices, along with the definitions that explain those terms. Because computing spans many specialties, a term’s meaning can depend on its subject area, source, and publication date.

What is computer terminology?

Computer terminology is the set of words and expressions used in the computer field and the meanings assigned to them. A glossary or dictionary gathers terms and definitions so people can describe technical ideas consistently. IEEE describes its Computer Dictionary project as an effort to identify terms in current use and establish standard definitions for them.

Terminology is more than a list of words: definitions are tied to context. The same term may be used differently in software engineering, cybersecurity, networking, or everyday computing. A definition is most useful when read alongside its source and the subject it addresses.

Why isn’t there one glossary for all computing?

Computing covers many distinct areas, including computer architecture, storage, software engineering, networking, programming languages, security and privacy, artificial intelligence, data management, and graphics. A glossary focused on one specialty cannot automatically serve as a universal dictionary for all of them.

Formal references also have a defined scope and edition. IEEE Std 610.12-1990 is a glossary of software engineering terminology, not a current all-purpose dictionary. Its foreword describes the broader IEEE Computer Dictionary project, but the standard itself is specific to software engineering.

Definitions can differ even in formal references. IEEE’s glossary foreword explains that editors drew on established standards and developed new, revised, or composite definitions when existing standards were incomplete, unclear, or inconsistent. Such differences can reflect the scope or editorial approach of a source rather than a simple error.

How do authoritative glossaries handle different meanings?

Cybersecurity and privacy references

The NIST CSRC Glossary aggregates cybersecurity and privacy terms from NIST standards, guidelines, technical publications, and CNSSI 4009-2022. NIST cautions that a term may have varying definitions across publications written at different times, and advises readers to consult the underlying source document for authoritative terminology and context. The glossary page reports that it was last updated August 26, 2026.

Historical compilations

NISTIR 4659, Glossary of Computer Security Terminology, published in September 1991, is a historical compilation of terminology used by federal departments and agencies. It explicitly did not aim to settle every entry on one agreed definition, and notes that some definitions may not be wholly consistent. It is useful for understanding historical usage, not as a current, universal authority.

How to look up an unfamiliar computer term

  1. Identify the subject area. Decide whether the term is being used in general computing, software engineering, cybersecurity, networking, or another specialty.
  2. Choose a source that covers that area. Use a relevant standard or glossary rather than assuming a general reference covers every technical use.
  3. Check the source and version. Note the issuing organization, publication date, and edition so you know which wording you are reading.
  4. Follow the definition to its source document. In particular, NIST recommends consulting the underlying publication to understand authoritative terminology and context.
  5. Compare definitions in context if they differ. Record each source’s scope and date, and distinguish an adopted definition from wording revised or combined by glossary editors. Do not force differing definitions into one universal meaning.

How to compare two definitions

When two references appear to disagree, compare the details that shape their wording:

  • Subject area: Is the definition for general computing, security, software engineering, or another specialty?
  • Provenance: Does it come from a standard, a government technical publication, or a compiled glossary? Can you trace it to the document that supplied it?
  • Date and edition: Were the definitions published at different times or under different editions?
  • Definition status: Is the wording adopted from a source standard, or revised or combined by glossary editors?
  • Intended use: Is the term being used in policy, engineering, software, security, or everyday conversation?

IEEE’s broader Computer Dictionary project illustrates why these checks matter: it brought together terms across subject areas, while its software engineering volume had a narrower scope. NIST’s cybersecurity glossary likewise directs readers back to the source publication because context and publication date can affect a definition.
