A comfortable seal helps in-ear earbuds deliver their intended bass and passive noise isolation; a loose seal can make sound seem thin. Try the supplied tip sizes, adjust each earbud gently, and assess your left and right ears separately.
What a proper earbud fit should feel and sound like
A well-fitting tip sits securely without needing to be pushed in hard or creating excessive pressure. It should stay in place during ordinary movement and feel comfortable over a listening session. Ears are not always alike, so the best size for one side may not be the best size for the other.

The tip also needs to seal the ear canal. JBL explains that a poor seal can make in-ear headphones sound thin, with less bass, and block less outside sound. If the audio seems unusually light on bass or isolation is weak, fit is one thing to check before changing EQ settings or deciding the earbuds are defective. This is a troubleshooting step, not a definitive diagnostic test. JBL’s fit and comfort guide describes the link between fit, sound, and blocking unwanted noise.
How to find the right tip size and position
- Start with the supplied tips. Use the size already installed or try the other sizes provided with your earbuds. Follow the wearing instructions for your specific model; the shape and insertion method vary.
- Insert the earbud gently and adjust it slightly. A small change in position or rotation may improve the seal and stability. Do not force the tip deeper to make it fit.
- Assess comfort and security together. If the tip feels too large or uncomfortable, try a smaller size. If the earbud feels loose, slips out, or sounds unbalanced, test another size or position. Look for a snug fit without pain or excessive pressure.
- Repeat separately for each ear. Try sizes independently on the left and right. Bose and beyerdynamic both note that ears can differ, so wearing different sizes is reasonable if that gives each side a comfortable, stable fit. Bose’s wearing guidance and beyerdynamic’s fit advice cover this variation.
- Use a fit check only if your model offers one. Some earbuds or companion apps provide a fit or seal test. Treat it as a product-specific guide, alongside your comfort and listening check—not a feature every earbud has. For example, Apple explains the ear-tip fit test and seal guidance for AirPods Pro, while Sony describes fit and tip selection for its supported headphones.
How the seal affects sound and noise control
The tip forms a physical barrier that contributes to passive isolation. When that barrier is incomplete, outside sound can leak in and bass may seem reduced. Reseating the earbuds or trying another supplied size is a useful first check when music sounds thin.

Active noise cancellation (ANC) is different: it uses microphones and electronics rather than relying only on the tip’s physical barrier. A good seal can support ANC, but it does not mean every sound will disappear. Sennheiser says ANC generally works better on lower-frequency sounds such as engine hum or air conditioning than on higher-frequency sounds such as voices; results also depend on the model and fit. If none of the included sizes feels comfortable and secure, look for replacement tips only after confirming they are compatible with your exact earbud model and attachment. Tip mounts are not universal, and a replacement that does not attach properly may not fit or seal correctly. Check the earbud maker’s compatibility information before buying. Apple and Sony provide model-specific fit guidance in their support pages linked above.

There is no universally best tip size, shape, or material established by these manufacturer guides. Prioritize a comfortable seal, stable fit, and compatibility with your earbuds rather than assuming one material or style will work for everyone.
