DOOM Eternal’s Horde Mode is a different kind of solo challenge: a score-focused run through a defined sequence of combat, timed, and traversal rounds. Choose Ripatorium for control over the encounter; choose Horde Mode for a structured run with lives, scoring, and unlocks.
What is Ripatorium in DOOM: The Dark Ages?
Ripatorium is The Dark Ages’ customizable arena mode. Its Encounter Manager lets you select demon types and quantities, choose an arena, adjust the enemy respawn counter, and set a time limit or switch on Endless mode. The initial release included City of Ry’uul, Village of Khalim, and Harbor of Souls. Bethesda’s Update 2 notes, dated August 7, 2025, describe it as an endless arena mode for setting up custom combat encounters.

Updates expanded the feature. Update 3 added more encounter presets, deeper customization, jukebox tracks, and passcode sharing for custom encounters on a per-round basis. Bethesda’s Update 3 notes date those additions to November 18, 2025.
The later Ripatorium 3.0 announcement ties additional maps, demons, and fully upgraded weapons to completing Master Arenas in the Revelations campaign. That is bonus content for Ripatorium 3.0; the announcement does not say Revelations is required to access the original Ripatorium. Bethesda’s Revelations announcement is dated July 7, 2026.

How does DOOM Eternal Horde Mode work?
Horde Mode is a single-player score competition built from three missions drawn from DOOM Eternal and The Ancient Gods – Parts One and Two. Rather than letting you construct the encounter, it sends you through a series of round types: an Arena Round, a Blitz Round, an optional Bonus Coin Round, a Traversal Round, and an optional Bonus Blitz Round. The official Horde Mode announcement says runs have no checkpoints and begin with three extra lives.
Scoring and progression
Points come from eligible demon kills, mission challenges, and coins in rounds where they apply. Larger demons are worth more, while a bounty demon’s value decreases over time. Score milestones unlock customization items. Each run starts with a mastered Combat Shotgun; after each Arena Round, the player receives another mastered gun at random, according to the official mode description.

Which mode should you play?
Pick Ripatorium if you want to shape the challenge
Ripatorium suits a solo player who wants to choose which demons appear and how the arena is configured, then decide whether to use a time limit or Endless mode. Later customization and passcode sharing make it possible to set up and share particular encounters. Calling it a practice or sandbox mode may be convenient shorthand, but Bethesda describes it as an arena mode or custom arena challenge mode.
Pick Horde Mode if you want a defined score run
Horde Mode is the fit if you want the game to supply the sequence and judge the run by its score, lives, and round performance. Its timed and traversal rounds break up arena combat, while its milestone rewards give the run an unlock track.

Are these modes in the same game?
No. Ripatorium belongs to DOOM: The Dark Ages; Horde Mode belongs to DOOM Eternal. Both are described by their official sources as single-player, but they are not two names for the same feature or two modes inside one game.
