To identify who may replace an unavailable NFL wide receiver, use the depth chart to find candidates, then confirm who is active and compare each player’s role and recent participation. The next name listed is a useful lead—not proof that he will inherit the absent receiver’s snaps, routes, or targets.
Start by confirming the receiver is unavailable
First identify the team, game, and receiver in question. A midweek injury designation or an older depth chart can become outdated, so check the team’s latest status and the game-day inactive list before treating a player as out. NFL Support says teams designate inactives about 90 minutes before scheduled kickoff: NFL Support’s inactive guidance. Until that announcement, a replacement projection is provisional.

Use the depth chart to generate candidates
Look at the team’s current depth chart and note the receivers listed behind the unavailable player. Check whether it distinguishes positions such as slot or outside receiver, or simply lists players by position. A depth chart gives you a starting point, but it does not guarantee a particular player’s game-day role.

That distinction matters because receivers’ assignments depend on formation and alignment. NFL Football Operations notes that “A standard formation calls for two wide receivers, but some offenses use three or four at a time.” The listed WR1 or WR2 is therefore not necessarily a one-for-one map to a specific receiver’s snaps: NFL Football Operations’ football terms.

Check that each candidate can play
Do not confuse a team’s roster with the list of players available for a specific game. NFL.com distinguishes the regular-season 53-player roster from the smaller game-day active list; the allowed game-day number depends on the offensive-line count. - Game-day inactive: The player is unavailable for that game. Check the final inactive announcement close to kickoff.
- Injured reserve: A player on IR is not eligible to play while on the list; return depends on applicable rules and timing.
- Practice squad: This is separate from the game-day roster. An eligible player may be elevated, but elevation alone does not establish a receiving role or workload.
- Game-day active: Confirm that a possible replacement is actually available before projecting his participation.
Compare the candidates’ likely roles
If several active receivers could fill in, compare what they do on the field rather than relying only on their order on the chart. These checks help assess fit; none is an official scoring system or guarantees a workload.

- Alignment: Is the absent receiver primarily a slot player, an outside receiver, or someone who moves between roles? A candidate with a similar alignment may be a better fit for that assignment.
- Recent participation: Look at who has been playing in the offense and whether a candidate has already taken part in similar situations.
- Assignment fit: Consider whether the candidate’s role matches the routes or responsibilities that need to be covered.
- Availability: Recheck active status, including whether a practice-squad player has been elevated.
Formation variation is why alignment matters, but it does not establish a universal NFL rule that the slot player replaces a slot receiver or that an outside receiver takes an outside role. Treat role fit as an informed inference.
If you are making a fantasy decision
Identifying a likely replacement and deciding whether to start him are separate questions. For a fantasy recommendation, assess likely routes and targets alongside quarterback and team context and the opponent. The roster and formation guidance above cannot establish a team-specific projection; use current game data and present any workload or fantasy outlook as an estimate, not a certainty.
