How NHL Teams Manage Goaltender Workloads and Backup Roles

NHL goalie rotations are decisions, not fixed rules. Recovery, travel, health, performance, backup readiness, and team priorities all shape who starts.

NHL teams do not follow a league-wide goalie rotation or a fixed starts limit. Coaches decide who plays by weighing recovery, schedule and travel, health, performance, backup readiness, standings, and postseason plans. On a back-to-back, teams commonly use both available goalies, but the order—and whether the non-starting goalie dresses at all—depends on the circumstances.

What shapes a goalie workload decision?

A starting-goalie decision is not just a count of recent starts. Coaches and goalie coaches consider how much recovery a goalie has had, the demands of the schedule, and the consequences of using one goalie rather than another. There is no established league-wide formula for combining those factors, and the sources do not identify a mandatory starts cap or a required interval between a backup’s games.

  • Recovery and cumulative workload: Game minutes are only one part of a goalie’s workload. Travel, rink time, warm-ups, and the need to stay ready to enter can also make a night at the arena less restful than a night off.
  • Schedule and travel: Consecutive games, the time between starts, and travel between cities affect the available recovery window.
  • Health and performance: A goalie’s physical condition and recent form matter, as does the coach’s assessment of how each available goalie is playing.
  • Backup readiness: A backup needs enough opportunity to maintain game rhythm and confidence, while remaining prepared to enter if the starter cannot continue.
  • Practice demands: Goalies need team practice, but also goalie-specific work that can develop technique and confidence in situations closer to a game.
  • Team priorities: Standings, the late-season schedule, and the possibility of a postseason run can change how a team manages its goalies.

Former NHL goalie coach David Marcoux describes the goalie coach’s role as evaluating the starter’s performance, physical health, and mental state, then advising the head coach on a plan for both starter and backup. He also identifies travel, schedule density, prior and expected workload, injuries, and standings as relevant factors. This is expert guidance, not a formal NHL rule. Marcoux’s NHL.com explanation dates to March 29, 2018.

How teams handle back-to-back games

When a team plays on consecutive days, it commonly splits the games between its available goalies. That is a common approach, not an automatic rotation: the coach may choose the order based on the opponent, each goalie’s rest, and the broader workload plan.

  • FUN: Not only is this item a great way to train for all sports, but it’s also an entertaining way to play with your dog, kids, or friends.

A Seattle Kraken article from January 5, 2022 called splitting a back-to-back a recent NHL standard and summarized differing analyses of consecutive-day play. It reported that a 2013 analysis attributed to Eric Tulsky found a save-percentage reduction of just over 11 percent for goalies playing on consecutive days. The same article noted that follow-up analyses by SMT’s Andrew Thomas and The Athletic’s Dom Luszczyszyn found the effect less significant. That older estimate is not a settled current effect size, nor does it establish that a rested backup will always outperform the starter. The Kraken’s workload explainer also reported 31.5 shots faced and 28.4 saves per goalie across 1,019 games through January 2 of the 2021-22 season; those are figures from that specific historical sample, not current league averages.

Why a starter might not dress as the backup

Being the backup for a game is not the same as having the night off. A goalie at the rink still has to warm up, travel, prepare mentally, and remain ready in case the starter is injured or cannot continue. Seattle goalie Joey Daccord told NHL.com on November 14, 2025 that backing up involves less mental stress than starting but still requires a goalie to be ready to enter.

Some teams therefore use a third goalie to let the starter take a complete night away from the rink. NHL.com’s 2025 account described Seattle carrying three goalies so Daccord could skip dressing when he was not scheduled to play. It also described Toronto and Ottawa using recalled goalies during back-to-back sequences to give their No. 1 goalies a full break. These are team-specific examples, not evidence that every NHL club carries three goalies.

A third goalie can also help with travel and start timing. In a Seattle example reported by NHL.com, Matt Murray traveled ahead to the second city to start the second game while the other goalies handled the first. Montreal and Carolina also used third-goalie arrangements for rest or travel reasons. These choices can give a starter more recovery, but they depend on roster availability and the team’s plan.

Ottawa coach Travis Green described the value of a full break for Linus Ullmark as a chance not to think about hockey and the grind. NHL.com’s November 14, 2025 report covers these examples and the difference between backing up and taking a complete night off.

What the backup does between starts

Backups can go long stretches between games, which can make it difficult to maintain timing and confidence. A backup still practices with the team, works with the goalie coach, and must be able to step in without warning. As Eric Comrie, then a Winnipeg Jets backup, put it to NHL.com in March 2025: “If I don’t play well this game, when am I going to play next?”

Practice is part of keeping a goalie prepared, but it is not identical to game action. The 2025 NHL.com report on backup goalies noted that backups can spend more practice time in shooter-focused situations that differ from game conditions. A goalie coach can balance team drills with technical repetitions and game-like work intended to help preserve rhythm and confidence. NHL.com’s report on backup rhythm and confidence discusses that challenge.

How the emergency backup differs from the regular backup

The ordinary backup is part of the team’s normal game plan and may start games as the workload is shared. An emergency backup goalie (EBUG) is a separate contingency for a situation in which a team needs additional goaltending depth; the EBUG does not replace the starter-and-backup deployment decision.

NHL.com reported on October 2, 2026 that, beginning with the 2026-27 season, each team is required to roster an emergency backup goalie. The report says EBUGs must meet experience restrictions, wear No. 00, practice, and travel with the team. Those requirements concern emergency coverage, not a universal rotation or a regular backup’s start schedule. NHL.com’s 2026-27 EBUG report provides the details.
