How to choose and contact a post
- Locate yourself. Note the city or state where you are now and compare it with the cities in the directory.
- Check the live listing. Open the Brazil Travel Advisory and review “Embassies and consulates.” The directory also links to the official U.S. mission website at br.usembassy.gov.
- For routine service, use the main contact. Check the mission website for current instructions before visiting; the State Department’s Help Abroad guidance directs travelers to an embassy or consulate for routine services as well as emergency help.
- For urgent help after hours, use the listed emergency contact. Belo Horizonte and Manaus route callers to Brasília, Fortaleza routes callers to Recife, and Salvador routes callers to Rio de Janeiro.
- If someone faces an immediate threat to life or safety, contact Brazilian emergency services first. Then contact the U.S. post for consular assistance. Do not assume the embassy can dispatch local responders.
What U.S. consular staff may help with
USAGov says U.S. citizens abroad can contact a U.S. embassy for assistance with situations including stranded citizens who need help returning to the United States, foreign crises and natural disasters, lost or stolen passports, medical emergencies, crime or arrest, missing persons, parental child abductions, and deaths abroad. For circumstances specific to you, contact a post for guidance. See USAGov’s emergency assistance abroad guidance, last updated March 31, 2026.

What “nearest” does—and does not—tell you
The closest listed city is a practical starting point, not proof that the post handles your particular service or has jurisdiction over the state where you are. The available directory does not establish current state-by-state consular district boundaries. If jurisdiction matters, check the relevant service instructions on the mission website or ask the post before traveling.
If you cannot reach the nearest embassy in an emergency, the State Department’s Help Abroad page lists 202-501-4444 for all other locations. Confirm the number on the live page before using it.
