On a DigitalOcean LAMP Droplet that runs MySQL locally, the root password is in /root/.digitalocean_password. A DigitalOcean Droplet created with a managed database instead uses /root/.digitalocean_dbaas_credentials, the DATABASE_URL environment variable and the database cluster’s control-panel details. Bitnami images use a generated application password as the MySQL password; Lightsail’s Bitnami LAMP image exposes it with cat bitnami_application_password.

Start by identifying the deployment
One-click LAMP is a packaging label, not a single operating system image. The provider, image publisher and database choice determine the account name, password location, network endpoint and authentication behavior. A password copied from one image can be completely irrelevant on another.
- DigitalOcean LAMP with local MySQL: the Droplet’s MySQL service runs on the same server and its root password is stored in
/root/.digitalocean_password. - DigitalOcean LAMP with Add a Database: the local MySQL service is stopped and disabled; use the managed cluster credentials in
/root/.digitalocean_dbaas_credentials,DATABASE_URLand the control panel. - Bitnami LAMP virtual machine: the MySQL username is
root, and Bitnami identifies the database password as the application password. - Amazon Lightsail Bitnami LAMP: the instance’s generated application password is read from
bitnami_application_passwordin the home directory.
If you are unsure which image you launched, check the provider’s instance or Droplet details before changing credentials. The image name is more useful than the generic phrase “one-click LAMP.”

Also note which machine you are logged into. A credential file on one Droplet cannot authenticate you to a different Droplet or to a managed cluster. Record the provider, image publisher, instance name and database choice first. This simple inventory prevents mixing a DigitalOcean local password with a Bitnami application account or using a local socket when the application was configured for a remote hostname.
DigitalOcean LAMP with MySQL running locally
Read the generated root password
- Connect to the Droplet over SSH as
root. Use the password supplied at creation or the SSH key configured for the Droplet. - Display the image’s password file:
sudo cat /root/.digitalocean_password
DigitalOcean’s LAMP catalog documentation states that the MySQL root password is in this file. The image initializes MySQL, runs mysql_secure_installation and creates the debian-sys-maint system user for initialization scripts. That system account is an operating-system service identity, not a replacement for the application’s database login.
The leading dot in the filename makes it a hidden file in ordinary directory listings, but it is still a normal readable file for the root account. Do not move it to a convenient shared directory. Its location and restrictive ownership are part of the image’s security model.
Use the password without exposing it
Start the client with an interactive prompt:
mysql -u root -p
When the client prints Enter password:, paste or type the value from the file. Do not append the password directly to the command, because shell history, process listings or copied terminal output can expose it. Treat the file as a secret: do not put it in tickets, source control, screenshots or public logs.
An interactive prompt also reduces accidental quoting errors. You do not need to surround the password with quotation marks, escape shell characters or worry that a special character will be interpreted by the shell. If you must automate an application connection, place the rotated secret in the application’s protected configuration or secret store rather than embedding it in a command copied into a shared script.
Confirm that this is really local MySQL
A local deployment should have a MySQL service on the Droplet. If the image was created with a managed database, the local service is deliberately stopped and disabled, so a correct local password will not make a local client connect to the managed server. Check the database choice in the Droplet’s configuration and use the managed procedure below when Add a Database was selected.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Local means that the server process, data and authentication endpoint are on the Droplet. The client normally connects to that local service, rather than to a public cluster hostname. Consequently, a network problem involving trusted sources or a managed-service firewall is not the first explanation for a local login failure. First verify that you are using the local account and local service on the intended Droplet.
DigitalOcean LAMP with a managed MySQL database
Find the managed credentials
When Add a Database is selected during creation, the LAMP image is configured for a managed MySQL cluster instead of its local server. Read the credentials file as root:
sudo cat /root/.digitalocean_dbaas_credentials
The Droplet also receives a DATABASE_URL environment variable. If it is available in your current shell, print it without adding a password to a command line:

printf '%sn' "$DATABASE_URL"
The file and variable contain connection information for the managed service, including the host, port, username, database name, password and any SSL-related settings supplied by the deployment. Keep the complete value private; a database URL commonly embeds the password.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA database URL is convenient for an application but can be easy to leak. Avoid pasting it into a chat window, issue tracker or terminal recording. If you need to inspect one field, use the provider’s control panel or a protected configuration workflow instead of copying the entire URL into an untrusted tool.
Use the cluster’s control panel as the authority
DigitalOcean’s managed-MySQL documentation identifies doadmin as the default accessible user. The standard MySQL port is 3306 unless the cluster specifies another port. The cluster Overview page shows the current hostname, port, database and SSL or trusted-source requirements, and the control panel can reveal or copy the password.
Use the values shown for your cluster in an interactive client. This example illustrates the shape only; replace every placeholder with the control-panel value:
mysql -u doadmin -p -h HOSTNAME -P 25060 -D DATABASE
25060 in that example is not a universal port. Managed clusters can use a different port, so copy the actual value from the Overview page. Omit the password after -p so the client prompts securely.
Read the command from left to right when troubleshooting: -u selects the database account, -h selects the remote host, -P selects the port and -D selects the initial database. A valid password paired with the wrong hostname or port still produces a connection failure. Likewise, a reachable host can reject the connection when the account, database name or TLS requirement is wrong.
Account and network differences from local MySQL
- The account is normally
doadmin, not the local image’srootaccount. - The endpoint is a remote cluster hostname rather than
localhostor a local Unix socket. - The cluster can require SSL settings or a trusted source before it accepts a connection.
- Backups, maintenance and availability are handled as managed-service functions rather than by the MySQL daemon on the LAMP Droplet.
Copying the local password into a managed connection command, or using root against the managed endpoint, addresses the wrong account model. The managed cluster’s Overview page is the current authority if values in an older file, environment variable or deployment note disagree.
Bitnami LAMP virtual machines
Understand the Bitnami account model
Bitnami documents the MySQL username as root and says that the database password is the same as the application password. The password is generated for the image; it is not safe to assume a universal bitnami password.
This relationship matters when an application installer asks for database credentials. On the documented Bitnami image, use the generated application password with the root database user. It is different from the operating-system login used to reach the virtual machine, even though both credentials are obtained during initial deployment.

Retrieve the application and database password
On supported Bitnami virtual-machine images, run:
sudo cat /home/bitnami/bitnami_credentials
Newer images generate the password randomly. Older image revisions can use a different mechanism, so an absent file or a rejected value should be handled according to the documentation for that exact image release rather than by trying common defaults.
Do not assume that every vendor-hosted image carrying the Bitnami name has identical paths. The virtual-machine procedure above is the Bitnami-documented pattern for supported images; a marketplace wrapper can alter the login user or file location. Confirm the image release and follow its instructions if the path is missing.
Connect after retrieving it
Use the value at an interactive MySQL prompt:
mysql -u root -p
If the image’s instructions provide a different operating-system account or client path, follow those image-specific instructions. The important distinction is that Bitnami’s application credential is also the database credential, while DigitalOcean’s managed deployment uses a separate cluster account and endpoint.
Amazon Lightsail Bitnami LAMP
Read the password from the instance
In the Lightsail console, open the instance’s Connect tab and choose Connect using SSH. From the resulting shell, run:
cat bitnami_application_password
If the shell is not in the home directory, use the absolute home-directory form:
cat $HOME/bitnami_application_password
AWS documents this as the default application-password procedure for its Bitnami LAMP instance. Because Bitnami identifies the application password as the MySQL password, use the displayed value when the image asks for the database password.
The relative command works only when the shell starts in the directory containing the file. Using $HOME avoids guessing the current directory while still reading the instance’s own credential file. Keep the output private and close or clear any terminal transcript that captured it.
Why the value in the file may not work
1. The deployment type is different
The most common mistake is reading a local-DigitalOcean file for a managed database, or reading a Bitnami file on a non-Bitnami image. Verify the image publisher and whether Add a Database was selected. A managed deployment can intentionally disable the local MySQL service.

A password is valid only for its account and server. Local DigitalOcean MySQL expects the local root account and a local connection. A managed cluster normally expects doadmin, its remote hostname, its assigned port and any required SSL or trusted-source configuration. Bitnami’s documented database account is root.

3. Extra whitespace was copied
Password files end with a newline, and copying a line through a terminal or ticketing system can add spaces or other invisible characters. Re-read the value directly on the server and type or paste it into the hidden prompt rather than copying surrounding text, quotation marks or the filename.
4. The password was changed after provisioning
The file records the image’s generated credential, not necessarily a later password rotation. Check the managed cluster’s current control-panel value or the application’s current secret configuration. Do not overwrite a working production credential merely because an old file still exists.
5. Authentication behavior differs by image revision
DigitalOcean confirms that its one-click image initializes the root password and runs mysql_secure_installation, but its catalog does not promise one reset procedure for every image revision or authentication plugin. If the expected file is absent or the value is rejected, use the current recovery documentation for that exact provider image. Avoid changing authentication plugins or manually editing grant tables without confirming the image’s supported recovery path.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
6. The managed service blocks the connection
A correct managed password still fails when the client uses the wrong port, an unapproved source address or missing SSL settings. Compare the command with the cluster Overview page and its trusted-source or TLS requirements. Do not substitute localhost for the cluster hostname.
7. The file belongs to a different account or machine
Root-only paths and Bitnami home-directory paths are local to the server where you run the command. If an SSH session opened a different instance, container or recovery environment, the expected file may be absent or may contain unrelated credentials. Confirm the hostname shown by your provider and the shell’s target before interpreting a missing file as evidence that the password was never generated.
8. The application is using another secret
Finding the original image password does not prove that the deployed application still uses it. An administrator may have rotated the database credential and updated the application configuration while leaving the original file unchanged. Compare the application’s active environment or secret-store entry with the provider’s current account value, and rotate deliberately rather than replacing a credential blindly.

| Port | Local client defaults, unless configured otherwise | 3306 unless the cluster specifies another; the example value 25060 is not universal |
| Local service state | MySQL runs on the Droplet | Local MySQL is stopped and disabled |
| Connection requirements | Local account and server authentication | Cluster account plus any SSL or trusted-source requirements |
| Maintenance responsibility | You maintain the MySQL service on the Droplet | The managed database service handles its platform maintenance and backup features |
The practical trade-off is operational as well as technical. With local MySQL, the credential and data are on the Droplet, and you are responsible for the daemon and its maintenance. With a managed cluster, the application reaches a separate endpoint and follows the provider’s account, network and SSL rules, while platform maintenance and backup features belong to the managed service. The credential lookup therefore tells you which operational model you are actually using.

Safe handling checklist
- Run password-display commands only in a trusted SSH session.
- Use
mysql -u USER -pand enter the secret at the prompt. - Never place the password after
-pin a shared shell or script. - Do not paste credential files or database URLs into support tickets, repositories, chat rooms or public logs.
- Protect access to the root-only files and do not broaden their permissions just to make another account read them.
- After rotating a password, update the application’s environment or configuration and any deployment secret store that uses the old value.
- Limit who can open the provider control panel, because managed passwords can be revealed or copied there.
- Remove temporary notes, screenshots and terminal recordings that contain the credential.
A practical recovery sequence
When you cannot log in, work through the checks in this order:
Best Value
- Record the provider and image name from the instance or Droplet details.
- Determine whether the database is local or managed; a managed setup may have no usable local MySQL daemon.
- Read only the credential location belonging to that image.
- Use the documented username, hostname and port together; do not mix local and managed values.
- Connect with an interactive
-pprompt and verify the exact database name and SSL requirements. - Check for copied whitespace, an outdated rotated secret or a different SSH target.
- If the file is missing, stale or rejected, consult the current recovery instructions for that image revision before changing authentication settings.
This process distinguishes a missing credential from a wrong endpoint, a disabled local service, a network policy failure and a genuinely changed password. It also avoids destructive “reset” steps that can lock out applications or alter an image’s supported authentication configuration.
What to record for future administration
Once access works, document the provider, image family, database type, account name, endpoint source and rotation owner without writing the secret itself into ordinary notes. Record whether the application reads DATABASE_URL or separate fields, and identify where the deployment secret is stored. This makes the next password rotation predictable and prevents an operator from reaching for the wrong image file months later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the MySQL password on a DigitalOcean LAMP Droplet?
For a Droplet using local MySQL, SSH in as root and run sudo cat /root/.digitalocean_password. Use the value with mysql -u root -p.
What if my DigitalOcean LAMP Droplet uses Add a Database?
The local MySQL service is stopped and disabled. Read /root/.digitalocean_dbaas_credentials, inspect DATABASE_URL, and confirm the hostname, port, user, database and SSL or trusted-source settings on the cluster Overview page. The usual user is doadmin.
Where does Bitnami store the MySQL credentials?
Supported Bitnami virtual-machine images provide the generated application credential in /home/bitnami/bitnami_credentials. Bitnami documents the MySQL user as root and the database password as the same application password.
How do I find the password on a Lightsail Bitnami LAMP instance?
Open the instance’s Connect tab, choose Connect using SSH, and run cat bitnami_application_password. If necessary, use cat $HOME/bitnami_application_password.
Why does the password in the file not work?
Check that you identified the correct image, database type, SSH target, username, hostname and port. Also check for copied whitespace, a password rotated after provisioning, and managed-service SSL or trusted-source requirements.
Is the DigitalOcean local root password the same as the managed database password?
No. Local MySQL uses the Droplet’s root account and /root/.digitalocean_password. A managed cluster normally uses doadmin and its own current credentials and endpoint.
Can I put the password directly after -p?
You can, but it can leak through shell history, process listings or copied output. Run mysql -u USER -p without a value after -p and enter the secret at the hidden prompt.
What should I do if the credential file is missing?
Do not invent a default or change authentication plugins blindly. Confirm the exact provider image and revision, then follow that provider’s current recovery procedure. A managed deployment may not have a usable local MySQL service at all.

The Bottom Line
Find the image first, then match its account and endpoint: DigitalOcean local LAMP uses /root/.digitalocean_password; DigitalOcean managed MySQL uses /root/.digitalocean_dbaas_credentials, DATABASE_URL and cluster details; Bitnami uses its generated application password; and Lightsail exposes it with bitnami_application_password. Connect with an interactive prompt, protect every credential, and troubleshoot the deployment type before attempting a reset.
