How to Find the Cheapest Gas Stations Along a Route in Google Maps

Google Maps can find gas stations along an active route and show nearby fuel prices, but it does not guarantee a worldwide cheapest-first list. Here is how to compare realistic stops, verify fuel grade and price age, and account for detours.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

To find gas stations along your drive, start navigation in the Google Maps mobile app, tap the magnifying-glass search control, and choose Gas stations (or search for “gas station” or “petrol station”). Maps will surface stops intended to be along the drive, so you can add one without planning a separate destination.

Finding stations and comparing their prices are related but separate tasks. Search Maps for gas prices or open individual station listings to compare the displayed price, then check the fuel grade, price age if shown, and the extra distance and time before committing. Google does not promise a complete, worldwide route list sorted from cheapest to most expensive.

What Google Maps can—and cannot—do

Google Maps has two useful tools for finding affordable fuel:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Along-route search: While turn-by-turn navigation is running, the in-navigation search button finds gas stations and other places along the drive. You can add a selected station as a stop.
  • Nearby price search: A separate search for “gas prices” can show fuel prices at nearby stations. You can also open station listings and inspect their details.

Those tools do not amount to a guaranteed route-wide “cheapest first” list. Price availability, sorting behavior and station coverage vary by country, platform and app version. Some listings have no price, and a displayed amount may not be current or may apply to a different fuel grade than the one your vehicle uses.

The practical method is therefore: find realistic stops along the route, compare the prices that Maps actually provides, and decide whether the saving justifies the detour. Think of the route search as a way to build a shortlist, not as proof that its first result is the best deal.

Before you search

Use the mobile app and start navigation

The documented along-the-drive workflow is in the Google Maps mobile app. Enter your destination, select a driving route and tap Start so that turn-by-turn navigation is active. Google’s route-search guidance describes tapping the magnifying glass during navigation to find gas stations and other places along the way. The exact icon placement can differ between Android, iPhone and app versions.

Know the fuel your vehicle needs

Record the required grade before comparing prices. Regular petrol, premium petrol, diesel and region-specific grades are not interchangeable prices. A station that appears cheapest can be more expensive for your vehicle if Maps is showing another grade. Compare the price for the fuel you actually intend to buy, rather than the lowest number visible in a station card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide how much of a detour is acceptable

A low pump price is not automatically the lowest trip cost. A station several miles away can consume enough fuel and time to erase the saving. Set a personal limit—for example, only consider stations that add a few minutes—or calculate the break-even point after you see the candidates. The best practical stop may be a little more expensive at the pump but much closer to your route.

Step-by-step: find gas stations along your route

  1. Enter your destination. In Google Maps, search for the destination, tap Directions, choose the driving mode and select a route.
  2. Start navigation. Tap Start to enter the live driving view. The along-route search controls are available while navigation is running.
  3. Open the in-navigation search. Tap the magnifying-glass or search control on the navigation screen. If the control is hidden, tap the map or the navigation panel to reveal the controls.
  4. Choose the gas-station category. Select Gas stations, or type gas station or petrol station into the search field. “Petrol station” is commonly used in the UK and other markets.
  5. Review the route candidates. Maps presents stations it considers along the drive. Look at the map position and the added time shown for each result, rather than assuming that every result is directly on your road.
  6. Open a candidate. Tap a station to view its listing, hours, available details and any displayed fuel prices. Check that the location is open when you expect to arrive.
  7. Add it as a stop. Use the option to add the station to your current trip. Maps recalculates the route with the fuel stop included. If the stop is unsuitable, remove it and select another candidate.

This search is designed to help you find places along the drive and avoid a major detour; it does not prove that the selected station is the cheapest in the area. Treat the route result as a shortlist for the price-comparison step. If the list does not suit you, try the alternate wording “petrol station” or inspect the map around the route for other candidates.

Step-by-step: compare prices in Google Maps

  1. Run a separate price search. In Maps, search for gas prices. Google’s 2023 published tip describes this query as a way to see fuel prices at nearby stations.
  2. Inspect the station results. Open each plausible station rather than relying only on the map pin. The listing may identify a fuel grade, a price and other station information.
  3. Match the grade. Compare like with like: the price for the grade your vehicle requires against the same grade at another station. Do not compare a regular-petrol price with a premium or diesel price.
  4. Check the price date or age notice. If Maps displays when a price was updated, use that information. A price without an age indicator is not proof that it was updated recently.
  5. Compare the route impact. Note the additional driving time and distance for each stop. A station with a slightly higher price may be cheaper overall if it is already on the route.
  6. Choose and add the best practical stop. Return to navigation, select the station and add it as a stop. Confirm the final route before pulling away.

Google’s price-search tip concerns nearby fuel prices, while its route-search guidance concerns finding places along the drive. They are related actions, but the published descriptions do not establish that every driver can see one complete route-wide list sorted by price. You may need to compare a few individual listings and use the map and route estimates to decide which ones are genuine candidates.

Maps may show prices only for some stations, and its interface may not offer a route-wide cheapest-first sort. If a result has no price, keep it in the route shortlist only if its location or convenience is important; do not treat an absent price as a low price.

How to decide whether a cheaper station is really cheaper

Use the fuel quantity you expect to buy

Calculate the pump-price saving with the amount you plan to purchase:

saving = litres (or gallons) × price difference

For example, a 10-unit price difference per litre saves 5 units on a 50-litre fill. That saving must cover the extra fuel burned and any value you place on the added driving time. The calculation compares the pump prices only; your actual trip cost also depends on the detour and your circumstances.

Account for the detour

Compare the station’s added distance and time with the saving. A station on your side of the road may have a small price premium but avoid a long turnaround, toll or congested junction. Maps’ route estimate is useful for this comparison, but traffic can change while you drive. A cheap station that requires a substantial diversion may not be cheaper once you account for the extra driving.

Include access and opening hours

A listing can be inexpensive yet impractical if the entrance is on the opposite carriageway, the station closes before arrival or the forecourt is difficult to enter with a trailer. Confirm operating hours and the actual route to the entrance when those details are available. The map pin alone does not tell you whether the entrance is convenient for your direction of travel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse a station’s listing with a guaranteed checkout price

A price shown in Maps is not a promise that the amount will be identical at the pump when you arrive. Recheck the grade and price at the station. A stale or mismatched listing can eliminate the expected saving. When two options are close, give more weight to a clearly labeled grade and a fresh price indication than to a lower figure with no context.

Compare the same things for each candidate

A quick side-by-side comparison should include the fuel grade, displayed price, price age if shown, added driving distance and time, and whether the station is genuinely close to your route. Also consider whether the station is open and reachable on your side of the road. A station only makes a useful comparison when you have enough information to distinguish a real saving from a stale price, a different grade or a long detour.

Price freshness and regional coverage

There is no reliable global percentage for how many Google Maps fuel listings have current prices, and there is no universal update interval. The behavior documented in one market should not be presented as a worldwide guarantee. Some areas may show useful prices for many stations; other areas may show only station locations or limited price information.

United Kingdom: Fuel Finder integration from 8 October 2026

On 8 October 2026, the UK government announced that Google Maps had begun displaying near-real-time petrol and diesel prices using the government’s Fuel Finder data. UK stations have been required since February 2026 to report a price change within 30 minutes. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said Fuel Finder data represented around 99% of fuel sold on UK roads at the time of the announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those figures describe the UK scheme, not every country’s Google Maps coverage. The government estimated that comparing prices could save an average household with a car around £40 a year; that is an estimate, not a guaranteed saving for an individual driver. Actual savings depend on how much fuel a household buys, price differences and whether a cheaper station is convenient.

Polly Billington MP, Minister for Energy Consumers, said: “Accessing the cheapest fuel should be simple, which is why it’s a gamechanger for near real-time fuel prices to be shown on Google Maps for the first time in the UK, helping drivers to find the best deal and save money at the pump.” Sarah-Jayne Williams, Google’s Director of Global Product Partnerships for Geo, said integrating Fuel Finder data into Google Maps and Waze gives drivers visibility on nearby pump prices and helps them make intentional choices to help their budgets go further this winter. Both statements refer specifically to the UK announcement and Fuel Finder data.

Australia: an age notice documented by the ACCC

An Australian Competition and Consumer Commission report published in 2024 described Google Maps showing prices for different fuels and displaying a notice when a price was more than 24 hours old in the context it examined. The ACCC also said it could not confirm the source of the prices shown in Google Maps and Waze in that report’s context. This is useful context for evaluating a listing, but it should not be generalized to every country or current app version. In particular, the 24-hour notice described in the report does not establish a universal Maps rule.

Elsewhere

In markets without a government-backed feed or broad station participation, you may see fewer prices or none at all. Search results can still help you locate stations along the drive, but you may need to verify the amount on arrival or use a local comparison service. There is no basis to assume that a price display or update schedule available in the UK or Australia will work the same way where you live.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

UK alternatives when Maps does not show enough

For UK drivers, the government says Fuel Finder data is also used by Waze, Petrol Prices, the AA, Confused.com and RAC Fuel Watch. These services can provide another way to inspect local prices when a Maps listing is missing a grade or station. Their coverage, interfaces and update behavior can differ, so compare the actual price date and station location rather than assuming they are interchangeable. This is an optional fallback, not a requirement for using Google Maps or a claim that any one service is best.

Google Maps features that are easy to confuse with price search

Eco-friendly routing

Google Maps’ eco-friendly route recommendations estimate fuel or energy efficiency for a route in select regions. The estimate can consider vehicle type, traffic, hills and road type. It helps choose a route that may use less fuel; it does not identify the cheapest pump price or rank gas stations. A route that is more fuel-efficient and a station with a lower listed price answer different questions.

Route APIs and developer tools

Google’s Routes API and Places API can be combined by software developers to search for locations along a planned route. That is a programming workflow, not a consumer feature you need to build to find a station during a normal trip. For an ordinary driver, the in-navigation search and station listings are sufficient.

Troubleshooting common problems

No gas-station button appears

  • Confirm that navigation has actually started; the along-route categories are tied to the active driving view.
  • Tap the map or navigation panel to reveal hidden controls.
  • Use the search control and type gas station or petrol station instead of relying on the category shortcut.
  • Update the Google Maps app if the interface is unusually different, then restart navigation.

The station is not really along the way

Open the result and inspect the route preview. Maps’ “along the way” result is an attempt to limit detours, not a guarantee that the station sits directly beside your road. Remove any stop whose entrance, turnaround or added time is unsuitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No price is displayed

Price coverage is incomplete and regional. Try the separate gas prices search, open nearby station listings individually and check whether a local fuel-price service has better coverage. Do not infer that a missing price is cheap. In the UK, Fuel Finder-supported services such as Waze, Petrol Prices, the AA, Confused.com and RAC Fuel Watch are potential alternatives named by the government.

The price looks old or inconsistent

Look for an age notice, compare the same grade at another station and treat an unverified amount as an estimate. Prices can change after an update or between the listing and the pump. The ACCC’s 2024 report described a notice for prices more than 24 hours old in its Australian context, but that detail is not a global freshness standard.

The wrong fuel grade is shown

Read the grade label in the station details and compare only the grade specified for your vehicle. If the listing does not make the grade clear, verify it at the station before filling. A displayed price for a different grade cannot establish which station is cheapest for your needs.

The route changes after adding a stop

Adding a station makes Maps recalculate the trip. Review the new arrival time, distance and traffic conditions. If the change is excessive, remove the stop and choose a station on the original route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A quick decision checklist

  • Is the station on, or close to, the direction you are already driving?
  • Does the displayed price apply to your required fuel grade?
  • Is a price date or age indicator visible?
  • How many extra minutes and miles (or kilometres) does the stop add?
  • Will the price saving cover the detour’s fuel and time cost?
  • Will the station be open when you arrive?
  • Can you safely pull over and complete the search before moving?

Use the checklist to choose the cheapest practical stop, not merely the lowest number in a map listing. Google Maps is strongest at finding candidate stations along your route; its price comparison is useful when data is present but remains dependent on local coverage and freshness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Google Maps show the cheapest gas stations along my route?

Google Maps can find gas stations along an active drive and can show prices for nearby stations in some areas. Google’s published guidance describes route search and price search separately, so do not assume every user gets a complete route-wide list sorted cheapest-first.

How do I find gas prices near me in Google Maps?

Search for “gas prices” in Maps, then inspect station listings and compare the same fuel grade. Price availability and freshness vary by region; a missing price is not evidence that the station is cheap.

Can I find gas stations along the way while navigating?

Yes. In the mobile app, start driving navigation, tap the in-navigation magnifying-glass or search control, and choose Gas stations or search “gas station” or “petrol station.” Review the route impact before adding a stop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Google Maps gas prices always up to date?

No universal update interval or global coverage guarantee is established. Check an age notice if one appears and verify the pump price and fuel grade at the station. The UK Fuel Finder integration announced on 8 October 2026 is a UK-specific development.

Does Google Maps eco-friendly routing find cheaper fuel?

No. Eco-friendly routing estimates route efficiency in select regions using factors such as vehicle type, traffic, hills and road type. It does not compare pump prices or rank gas stations.

The Bottom Line

To find cheap gas on Google Maps, use the in-navigation search to identify gas stations along the way, then separately search “gas prices” and inspect station details. Compare the same fuel grade, note any price-age information, and weigh the displayed saving against the extra distance and time. Price coverage and sorting vary by market, so treat Maps as a helpful shortlist—not a guaranteed worldwide cheapest-first finder.
