How to Find the Backlink Gap Between Your Site and Competitors

A backlink gap reveals domains or pages linking to competitors but not your site. Learn how to compare the right competitors, verify real opportunities, and prioritize prospects without treating a link report as a ranking promise.

A backlink gap is the set of referring domains or individual pages linking to one or more competitors but not to your site. Find those differences with a competitor-link comparison, then inspect each live source page and decide whether you have something genuinely useful to offer its audience. The result is a prospecting list—not a promise of a link or better rankings.

What a backlink gap shows—and what it does not

A backlink is a hyperlink from another website to one of your pages. A referring domain is a domain that provides one or more backlinks. If one domain links to a competitor several times, it is still one referring domain, so a referring-domain gap measures domain coverage rather than raw backlink volume.

Gap reports identify places where competitors have links and your site appears not to. They do not establish that the link is currently live, that it is editorially attainable, or that earning a similar link will change search rankings. Treat each result as a lead to verify.

How to find and evaluate the gap

  1. Choose competitors that share your search audience

Compare sites that compete for the same readers or search results. Tool-suggested organic competitors can help, but review them manually: a much larger brand, directory, or unrelated site may produce a gap that is large but not useful. Ahrefs’ methodology guide discusses organic competitors and relative site scale as selection cues: Ahrefs’ Link Intersect guide.

  2. Set the same scope on every side

Use domain-level comparison to explore broad link profiles. If you are trying to support one article or topic, compare the relevant URLs or pages instead; a site-wide comparison can obscure whether a prospect is suitable for that specific resource. Ahrefs Link Intersect supports domain or URL targets and up to 10 competitor URLs; Semrush Backlink Gap documents comparisons of up to five sites and accepts domains, subdomains, or URLs. These are documented product limits and may change. See Ahrefs Link Intersect help and Semrush Backlink Gap documentation.

  3. Run a referring-domain comparison

Enter your site and the selected competitors, then filter for domains linking to competitors but not your site. Note how many competitors each domain links to. A domain linked to by several competitors may indicate recurring relevance in that niche; a domain linked to just one competitor can still be a good prospect if the source page is closely relevant.

  4. Open the source page, not just the domain

A domain-level match is not enough to judge a prospect. Find the page containing the competitor’s link and check whether the link is live, what it points to, how it fits the page, and whether your own resource would add value for that page’s audience. Ahrefs recommends checking relevance and site quality and then using a referring-pages view to locate the specific page.

  5. Record a reasoned shortlist

For each possible prospect, record the referring domain and source page, which competitors it links to, the page on your site that might serve the audience, your review status, and why it merits attention. Ahrefs suggests treating domains linked to by all competitors as high priority and those shared by at least two as medium priority. These are workflow heuristics, not universal ranking thresholds; relevance and editorial fit still require human judgment.

  6. Verify before contacting anyone

Revisit promising links on the source pages. Link databases and reports may not reflect the current live page. Contact a site only when you can explain a genuine editorial reason to consider your resource; a missing link is not, by itself, a reason to request one.

How to prioritize prospects

Assess each candidate using the following factors, in roughly this order:

  • Topical and audience relevance: Does the site and the particular source page serve readers who would benefit from your resource?
  • Source-page context: Is the competitor link part of an editorial recommendation, a resource list, a citation, or some other context your page could credibly improve?
  • Competitor overlap: How many of your selected competitors does the domain link to? Treat overlap as a clue, not a score that overrides relevance.
  • Link and destination status: Is the link live, and does it lead to a useful page? If it is broken or points to an outdated destination, establish that before considering outreach.
  • Potential value of your page: Can you offer a more useful, accurate, or relevant resource for that audience? If not, there may be no sound reason to seek a link.
  • Traffic and authority estimates: Use these as secondary indicators, not proof. Semrush describes Authority Score as a compound domain metric and Monthly Visits as an estimate; neither is a direct Google measure or evidence that a placement is worthwhile.

Where the tools fit

Tool Useful for Documented comparison scope Important qualification
Ahrefs Link Intersect Finding domains or referring pages that link to competitors but not your site; drilling into links and exporting results. Up to 10 competitor URLs; domain- and URL-level targets. Ahrefs help said the feature was available on all subscription plans when updated September 3, 2026. Confirm current plan details and interface before relying on that availability. Official help.
Semrush Backlink Gap Comparing sites, filtering for missing prospects, reviewing match counts and link status, and exporting. Up to five sites; domain, subdomain, or URL scope. Usage and report limits vary by plan. Official documentation.
Google Search Console Cross-checking links reported for a site you control. Not a competitor-gap comparison tool. The Links report is a sample, not a complete inventory. Google’s Links report documentation.

The feature descriptions establish what these tools say they can do; they do not provide an independent accuracy comparison or show that one tool produces better rankings. Choose based on the comparison scope and workflow you need, and check current plan limits before depending on a feature.

Use Search Console as a partial cross-check

For a property you control, Google Search Console’s Links report shows top linking sites, top-linked pages, linking text, and some linking pages. Google explains that the report is not a comprehensive list: it provides a sample, groups entries by root domain and canonical URL, combines duplicates, and can include links that have since disappeared. It also does not say whether a listed link is nofollow. An absent row therefore does not prove that no link exists. Use Search Console to inspect your own reported links, not to establish a complete competitor gap.

Keep outreach within Google’s link-spam policies

Google defines link spam as “the practice of creating links to or from a site primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings.” Its examples include buying or selling ranking links, exchanging goods or services for links, automated link creation, excessive exchanges, and paid articles whose links pass ranking credit. Keep outreach focused on earning relevant editorial references. Google permits advertising and sponsorship links when they are qualified with rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored". See Google Search Central’s link-spam policy.
