Build a shortlist of games you genuinely want, set a price target and a total spending cap, then use Steam alerts and price history to judge each offer. A large discount is not a good deal if you would not play the game soon or its final price is above what you planned to pay.
1. Choose games before opening the sale page
Start with titles you would actually buy at a price you can afford. Add them to your Steam wishlist so you can keep track of them and receive sale notifications. Steam says wishlist alerts can arrive by email or through the Steam mobile app; see Steam Wishlist.

This order matters: browsing a large sale first can turn a low price into a reason to buy a game you never intended to play. Your wishlist is a shortlist, not a shopping obligation.

For each shortlisted game, decide the most you are willing to pay before a sale begins. Separately, set a total amount you can spend during the sale. Steam announced wishlist filters for discount levels and price tiers, including titles purchasable with the current Steam Wallet balance, in its 2018 wishlist announcement. The announcement is historical, so check the current wishlist interface rather than relying on an exact menu path.

Keep the target price distinct from the discount percentage. A 70% reduction can still be poor value for you if the game is not on your shortlist or you are unlikely to play it soon. A practical purchase test is:
- Is the current regional price at or below your target?
- Does the offer include the edition and content you actually want?
- Are you likely to start playing it soon?
- Does buying it keep you within your total cap?
If any answer is no, leave it wishlisted and reconsider when circumstances change.

3. Compare today’s price with its history
A discount badge tells you how the current offer compares with a listed reference price; it does not tell you whether today’s price is unusually low. Check a price-history graph for the same game and region. SteamDB provides price-history information, but its displayed low is the lowest price captured during its recording window—not necessarily the game’s all-time low. Regional currencies and recorded coverage can differ, and SteamDB is independent of Valve.

Use the graph as context, not a guarantee. A current price near a recorded low may be compelling if it also meets your own target, but the chart cannot establish what price will appear in a future sale.

4. Use Steam sales and alerts without rushing
Steam runs seasonal sales four times a year. Valve’s schedule, as reviewed on October 4, 2026, lists the following dates; check the Steamworks Seasonal Sales page again because schedules can change.

Valve documents that a discount of at least 20% during a seasonal sale automatically triggers an email notification for a wishlisted game. Notifications can help you notice an offer, but neither an alert nor a seasonal-sale banner promises that a particular title will be discounted—or that its price will be the lowest you will ever see. Publishers control participation and individual pricing through Steamworks.
5. Apply a spending brake before checkout
Before browsing, write down your total cap and the games you might buy. Purchase only when the game is on that list, its price meets your target, and you expect to play it soon. Treat an alert as a prompt to reassess, not an instruction to spend. If you reach your cap, stop—even if more offers look attractive.

6. Treat refunds as a fallback, not a buying strategy
Valve’s standard refund policy for games says a purchase is generally eligible for a refund request within 14 days if the game has been played for less than two hours. Valve also says it does not consider an immediate refund and rebuy at a sale price abusive. These are policy conditions, not a guarantee for every transaction: check the live Steam Refunds policy for exceptions and eligibility, particularly for DLC, bundles, keys, and in-game purchases.
Valve cannot refund purchases made outside Steam. If comparing another seller, confirm the seller is legitimate, the edition and region restrictions match what you want, and the seller’s refund terms work for you. A lower listed price is not automatically an equivalent offer.
