Check closures, incidents, construction, road conditions and weather alerts, then use a navigation app or other source as a second view. Recheck close to departure: traffic information can change, and no map guarantees that every closure appears immediately.
Start with the road authority’s official service
For a trip in the United States, look for the state or regional Department of Transportation (DOT) traveler-information site or 511 service covering each major part of your route. Caltrans explains that 511 is a three-digit number that routes callers to region-specific information; many 511 systems also offer websites, trip planning and mobile apps. Those features vary by location, so check what your route’s service actually provides: Caltrans 511 information.

Wisconsin, for example, offers its 511 service online, by phone and through an app. Its service includes incidents, construction, travel times, road conditions, speeds and lane closures, and lets users create alerts for selected counties. These details describe Wisconsin’s service, not every 511 system: Wisconsin 511.
The cited services are U.S. examples, not a global directory. Outside the United States, find the official transportation authority for the jurisdiction you will travel through. On a long trip, identify the authorities responsible for the route’s different segments; coverage may change at state, regional or national boundaries.

- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones

Check the route, direction and event details
Enter your route in the official site or inspect the road numbers and direction manually. A colored congestion line is not enough: open the available layers, alerts or incident details and look for information such as:
- Full road closures and lane restrictions.
- Crashes, other incidents and construction.
- Road conditions, travel times and speeds.
- Weather alerts, forecasts and relevant camera images, where offered.
Read each important notice for its location, direction, reported or updated time, start time, expected duration and detour details, if provided. A service may show cameras, message signs or other context that helps clarify what an alert means. Alaska 511, for instance, lists road conditions, traffic speeds, cameras, weather alerts and forecasts, route planning, and optional notifications for roadwork, incidents or conditions: Alaska 511 help.

Do not assume a road is open just because a navigation app still draws a route through it. If a notice is unclear or consequential, check the responsible road authority’s information or phone service before relying on that segment.
Use a second source to cross-check, not replace, official information
A navigation app or crowdsourced report can provide another view of congestion and reported events. Its usefulness depends on the road, location and underlying data; a user report is not necessarily confirmed, and coverage varies.

For example, Alaska 511 says Waze incident and closure information appears alongside information reported by Alaska DOT. That is an example of one service’s integration, not a guarantee that every state or regional system incorporates Waze or other community reports: Alaska 511.
Data provenance also differs within official services. The Bay Area’s 511.org FAQ says CHP supplies its traffic-incident data, while construction and event information comes from several sources, including the Caltrans Lane Closure System. That description applies to the Bay Area service, not 511 services nationwide: 511.org FAQ.

Judge an alert before changing your plans
When sources disagree or an alert could change your route, assess what the information actually establishes:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Authority: Is the notice from the agency responsible for that road, a regional service, or an individual report?
- Coverage: Does the source cover the exact road, direction and segment, including rural roads and jurisdiction boundaries?
- Freshness: Is there a reported or updated time? Treat an old or undated alert cautiously.
- Specificity: Does it say whether the road is fully closed or restricted, where the event is, and whether a duration or detour is available?
- Corroboration: Do a camera, message sign, agency feed or second service support the notice?
If a major closure remains ambiguous, contact or consult the authority responsible for the road rather than treating an app’s suggested route as confirmation.

Refresh close to departure and check safely
Closures and incidents are time-sensitive, so revisit the official source near departure. There is no universal number of hours in advance that suits every journey. For a long trip, check again during a safe stop before reaching a segment where a new incident could change your plan.
Do not handle a phone while driving. 511.org advises checking before leaving, calling 511 for voice information, or pulling over safely before checking a smartphone: 511.org. Use a voice-operated service only where available and when it can be used safely.
