During a radiation emergency, the core protective advice is: get inside, stay inside, and stay tuned. Treat unsourced social posts as claims to verify—not as instructions—and follow local officials for incident-specific directions.
Where to get reliable nuclear emergency updates
Use local emergency-management authorities and official alerts first for instructions that apply to your area. FEMA/Ready.gov and the CDC offer general preparedness and public-health guidance, but local authorities determine incident-specific evacuation, shelter, screening, and all-clear directions.

- Local alerts: Sign up for notifications from your local emergency-management agency. They can provide geographically relevant directions.
- Official federal guidance: Check Ready.gov’s Radiation Emergencies page and the CDC’s Preparing for a Radiation Emergency and What to Do in Radiation Emergencies pages.
- More than one alert channel: The FEMA App can provide real-time National Weather Service alerts for up to five locations nationwide and help find nearby shelters, according to Ready.gov. App features and availability can change, so check its current details.
- Radio: CDC recommends a battery-powered or hand-crank emergency radio and identifies NOAA weather radio as one of the best ways to stay tuned. Keep spare batteries if your radio needs them.
CDC also lists television, computers, mobile devices, email, verified social accounts, and SMS as possible ways officials may share updates. Phone calls may be difficult during a large emergency, so do not rely on a single channel or device.
How to check whether a nuclear emergency claim is credible
Before sharing or acting on a post, check who issued it, when it was issued, and which place it covers. Find the original notice from the named agency and compare it with current local alerts and official guidance. An old or out-of-area warning may not apply to your situation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Look for an identifiable emergency-management agency or public-health authority behind the message.
- Check the notice’s date and geographic scope; confirm it is current and relevant to your location.
- Compare its advice with current local instructions and CDC or FEMA/Ready.gov guidance.
- Do not treat a viral post without an identifiable official source as an emergency instruction. CDC notes that officials may use verified social accounts to share updates.
- Avoid forwarding sensational claims about radiation effects, exposure, plume paths, or evacuation zones without an agency or primary-source basis.
Official general guidance helps explain protective actions; it does not establish what is happening in a particular incident. For real-time decisions, rely on local officials rather than a post that predicts conditions or conflicts with current instructions. The reviewed agency guidance does not provide a statistic on how often nuclear-emergency misinformation appears or how much harm it causes.
What to do during a radiation emergency
CDC’s basic advice is to get inside, stay inside, and stay tuned. The precise instructions for an incident come from emergency officials.

- Get inside. If you are outside or in a vehicle, enter the nearest building as soon as possible.
- Move toward the center or basement. Choose a basement or the middle of the building, away from exterior walls, doors, windows, and the roof.
- Stay sheltered and monitor official updates. Do not leave until officials say it is safe, unless the building is unstable or you face another life-threatening condition.
- Decontaminate if you may have been exposed to fallout. Remove your outer layer of clothing, wash exposed skin, and put on clean clothes. CDC says removing the outer layer can remove up to 90% of radioactive material. Avoid harsh scrubbing and follow official or medical directions for additional care.
- Follow instructions about food, water, evacuation, screening, and medical care. CDC’s basic response steps advise using bottled water and food in sealed containers.
How nuclear explosions differ from other radiation emergencies
A nuclear detonation, a dirty bomb, and a power-plant accident are different events. The shared advice to get inside and listen for updates is a starting point, not a substitute for instructions tailored to the hazard.

Reliable updates when the power or internet is down
Plan to receive instructions through more than one route: local alerts on a mobile device, an emergency radio, and other working official channels such as broadcast television or verified agency accounts. A battery-powered emergency radio or hand-crank emergency radio can provide another option when household power or internet service is unavailable; keep spare batteries for battery-operated equipment. No single device guarantees that you will receive an alert.
CDC describes NOAA weather radio as one of the best ways to stay tuned. FEMA/Ready.gov also recommends signing up for local emergency-management alerts and keeping a radio as a backup. Choose channels your household can actually use, and pay attention to whether they work without internet or household power.
