Both lead to official learning collections and opportunities. Choose the route that fits the learner, search by a mission or subject, and check each individual page for audience, format, dates, eligibility, and access details before building a lesson or plan around it.
Why begin with NASA or ESA?
When accuracy and attribution matter, an agency-owned page is a useful starting point: it connects learners to resources published or organized by the agency responsible for the missions and programs being studied. The NASA and ESA education hubs also make it easier to move from a broad interest in space exploration to a resource intended for a particular age group, classroom, or kind of learning.

That does not mean every page is suitable for every learner, or that a top-level hub answers every practical question. A mission page, activity, video, teacher guide, or student opportunity can have different audiences and conditions. Treat the hub as a reliable route into the collection, then assess the specific item before using it.

The same article described nearly 2,000 items in NASA’s STEM Resource Search at that time. That is a dated catalog count, not a current total; check the search itself rather than assuming the number has stayed the same. NASA’s navigation guide explains how to use the collection.

Choose the right starting point for the learner
The quickest way to avoid a poor match is to decide who will use the material before searching. A child exploring independently, a teacher preparing a class, and a university student looking for a hands-on opportunity may all be interested in the same mission, but they need different kinds of resources.
| Reader or use | NASA route | ESA route | What to look for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Children and school-age learners | For Kids and Students | ESA Kids and Paxi, linked from ESA Education | Age or grade fit, accessible explanations, and a format the learner can use independently or with an adult. |
| Classroom teachers | For Educators | Teach with Space and Teachers’ Corner, linked from ESA Education | Lesson or activity materials, intended grade band, subject, and what preparation or materials the page specifies. |
| University students | Explore Opportunities, linked from NASA For Kids and Students | ESA Academy | Whether the item is learning content or an application-based opportunity, plus current eligibility and deadlines. |
| General or informal learning | NASA Science Learning Resources | ESA Kids and other public resources linked from ESA Education | A clear topic match and a format appropriate for self-guided exploration. |
NASA’s student hub separates routes into Space to Play for grades K–4, Out-of-this-World Stuff for grades 5–8, Experience NASA for grades 9–12, and Explore Opportunities for college students. These labels are useful first filters, not a substitute for reading the description on the resource itself.
ESA’s hub offers several different paths rather than one single age-banded directory: ESA Kids and Paxi for younger audiences, Teach with Space and Teachers’ Corner for teaching, school projects for participation, and ESA Academy for university students. The hub lists projects such as Astro Pi, CanSat, Climate Detectives, Mission X, and Moon Camp. Their dates and entry rules can change, so use each project’s own page to determine whether it is open and appropriate.

How to search NASA’s learning collections
Use the STEM Resource Search for a targeted query
Open NASA Learning Resources and follow the STEM resource search. Search for a topic, mission, or keyword, then narrow the results using the available grade-level and subject filters. This is usually more productive than browsing a large collection without first deciding what the learner needs.

- Choose a learner level. Select the grade or audience closest to the intended user. If a resource is for a mixed-age group, inspect its page to see whether it offers adaptation guidance rather than relying on the broad category alone.
- Enter a concrete search term. Try the subject or mission the learner wants to understand, such as Artemis, the Moon, Mars, satellites, or the International Space Station. A specific term helps focus results; broaden it if the collection returns too few relevant items.
- Apply a subject filter when useful. A mission may involve several STEM subjects. Filtering can help you find a resource aligned with the class or learning goal instead of a general mission overview.
- Open likely results and read their descriptions. Confirm the intended audience and whether the item is a lesson, activity, video, interactive, or another format. The search result is a discovery aid, not the whole specification.
- Check practical details before committing. Look for the resource’s publication or update date, prerequisites, materials, time expectations, language information, and any geographic or application conditions that are stated on the page.
Browse NASA Science by topic or material type
If you are exploring broadly or want to distinguish an activity from another kind of learning material, use the NASA Science resource catalog. Its catalog supports browsing and filtering by subject and material type. This route can be helpful when you know the concept you want to teach but have not yet settled on a particular mission or format.
NASA also provides a broader Science Learning Resources collection for people of different ages. Use it to explore collections and participation programs, then follow through to the individual item for its audience and current details.
How to find ESA material for your purpose
For classroom teaching
Start at ESA Education and follow the links for Teach with Space or Teachers’ Corner. These are the relevant routes when the goal is to bring a space topic into a lesson or find teacher-oriented support. Check the linked resource’s own description for the class level, format, preparation, and any other stated requirements before scheduling it.
For younger learners
Use the ESA Kids and Paxi paths from the education hub when looking for child-focused material. These routes are distinct from teacher training or university opportunities. As with any age-directed page, read the item itself to confirm that its language and format suit the particular learner.

For school projects and participation
The ESA Education hub links to school projects including Astro Pi, CanSat, Climate Detectives, Mission X, and Moon Camp. These names point to possible project routes, not a guarantee that enrollment is open or that every school can participate at any time. Open the individual project page to verify its current dates, eligibility, and instructions before planning a class around it.
For university students
ESA Academy is the university-level route for hands-on space projects, educational satellites, experiments, and training opportunities. It is different from browsing general explanatory resources: notices and applications may be time-sensitive. Read the current notice for its stated requirements and deadline rather than inferring eligibility from the Academy’s broad audience.
Build a useful learning path around a mission
A mission collection can make space exploration easier to teach because it gives a learner a sequence of connected questions rather than an assortment of unrelated links. NASA’s Artemis I STEM Learning Pathway is an example focused on human space exploration. It includes material tagged for K–4, 5–8, 9–12, and informal education, with themes covering preparation for launch, the journey to the Moon, lunar science, return and splashdown, and future Artemis missions.
Use a mission pathway as a map, not as an assumption that every item must be completed in order. First identify the learner’s question: how a mission is prepared, what scientists learn, or how a spacecraft returns, for example. Then select a mission overview to establish context and an activity or educator guide from the same collection to let the learner work with the idea. Pairing explanation with an exercise helps connect mission facts to something the learner can investigate or do.

- Set a learning goal. Decide what the learner should be able to explain or explore by the end: a mission stage, a science question, or a space-exploration concept.
- Select a matching overview. Choose a resource that gives enough mission context for the learner’s level without trying to cover every detail.
- Add an activity or guide. Look within the same agency collection for a related exercise or educator resource. Confirm that its instructions and materials suit the class or independent learner.
- Check sequence and timing. If the collection presents themes in stages, choose the portion that fits your goal and schedule. Do not assume every pathway item is required or that all items have identical time demands.
- Recheck linked pages before use. Confirm that any activity, opportunity, or supporting material remains available and that its requirements fit your situation.
How to judge whether a resource is a good fit
“Reliable” is not only a question of who published a page. A useful resource must also match the learner, answer the question at hand, and be practical to use. Apply the following checks to each candidate before assigning it, sharing it, or building a lesson around it.
- Provenance: Is the item on an agency-owned page or linked directly from an official NASA or ESA collection? If you find a repost elsewhere, return to the official page to verify the original context and attribution.
- Audience: Does the page identify an age, grade, educator role, or student group? A broad collection may include materials aimed at very different levels.
- Purpose: Is it a mission overview, science explanation, activity, video, interactive, teacher guide, or application-based opportunity? Pick the format that serves the learning goal rather than choosing by topic alone.
- Currency: Is there a date, update note, application window, or deadline? Dates matter especially for projects, training, and other opportunities whose availability can change.
- Access: Does the item state a language, country, institution, or other participation condition? Look for those details on the individual page; the broad hubs do not establish them for every linked item.
- Practical requirements: Does the page specify materials, preparation, prerequisites, or a particular learning setting? Make sure those conditions are manageable before promising the activity to a class.
These checks also help distinguish a stable learning resource from a time-sensitive opportunity. A general activity may remain useful while an application notice linked nearby has expired. Do not extend one project’s eligibility rules to the agency’s entire collection—or assume an opportunity is open simply because its overview page is still accessible.
Common search mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by topic but not by age or role
A search for “Moon” can return material aimed at children, teachers, advanced learners, or the general public. Add a grade or audience filter where one is offered, then verify the description. If you are teaching several ages together, check whether the material supports adaptation instead of assuming a single grade label will work for everyone.

Planning around an old opportunity notice
Projects, training, and applications can have specific windows or eligibility conditions. Follow the link to the current project or notice and confirm the dates and requirements before building a schedule. An entry in a broad hub establishes that a program exists as a resource route; it does not prove a current application is open.
Best Value
Treating a catalog count as permanent
NASA’s nearly 2,000-resource figure was reported by NASA in 2024. Catalogs change, so use current search results to find what is available now rather than repeating an older count as though it describes today’s inventory.
Assuming every access detail is listed on the hub
A landing page is designed to direct users to collections and programs, not necessarily to record every language, accessibility, country restriction, or prerequisite across all linked items. Inspect the destination page for the details it actually states. If an important condition is not stated there, do not infer it from a different resource or from the agency’s general audience description.
Collecting links without a learning sequence
A list of mission pages may be accurate yet hard to use. For a lesson or self-guided project, connect a contextual overview to a related activity or guide, then check that the pair serves one clear goal. This creates a more coherent path than handing the learner a set of unrelated search results.

- Decide whether the resource is for an independent learner, child, classroom teacher, or university student.
- Open the official NASA or ESA hub and choose its route for that audience.
- Search by a mission or topic, then use the available grade, subject, or material-type filters.
- Open the individual result and confirm its purpose, audience, date, format, and stated prerequisites.
- Check any geographic, language, application, or deadline conditions that matter to the learner.
- For a lesson, pair a mission overview with a related activity or educator guide from the same agency collection.
- Before using the material, revisit time-sensitive pages to make sure the details still apply.
Following those steps keeps the search grounded in official collections while leaving the final suitability decision where it belongs: with the specific page and the learner who will use it.
