What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start with your country’s official climate or environment agency and your local government, then check hazard-specific official sources for risks such as flooding, extreme heat, wildfire, drought, or sea-level rise. Read each map’s geographic resolution, time period, and measure carefully: a regional projection can help you screen for concerns, but it does not establish the risk to a particular property.
Start with the location and decision you care about
“My area” could mean a neighborhood, municipality, county, watershed, or larger region. Choose the scale before searching, and consider what you need to decide: health preparations, a home purchase, business continuity, infrastructure planning, or community resilience. A tool suited to a county overview may not provide enough detail for a site-specific decision.

Make a short list of the hazards and assets that matter. The U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit describes exposure as the presence of people, assets, or ecosystems in places where hazards could adversely affect them. Its Understand Exposure guidance suggests considering hazards such as flooding, drought, landslides, wildfire, high winds, and extreme heat, and matching possible hazards to assets in an exposure matrix.

Use official sources, but choose the right jurisdiction
Begin with the national or regional climate, environment, or emergency-management agency for your location. Then check your local authority’s hazard, resilience, planning, or adaptation information. Government sources are not automatically interchangeable: a national climate portal, local flood map, and emergency alert service may answer entirely different questions.

- [Wireless Weather Station with Atomic Time&Date] Atomic alarm clock weather station can be used not only as a wireless indoor outdoor thermometer but also as an atomic clock with dual alarms.
For a U.S. example, the U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit Help Desk calls the Climate Mapping for Resilience and Adaptation (CMRA) Assessment Tool “A good place to start” for local climate data and projections. CMRA presents downscaled global climate-model results for selected geographies and indicates projected changes in severity and frequency for five common climate-related hazards through this century. Its geographic coverage and outputs are specific to the tool; it is not a universal portal for every country or every local question.
The Toolkit also lists U.S. federal resources including FEMA’s National Risk Index and Resilience Analysis and Planning Tool, NOAA coastal resources, Heat.gov, Wildfire Risk to Communities, State Climate Summaries, and Climate Explorer. Its Help Desk resource directory is a useful way to identify tools, but use each tool’s own documentation to understand its intended use and limitations.

Separate past events, current conditions, and future projections
These time frames answer different questions. Historical records show what has happened in the observed period; recent trends provide context about changing conditions; future projections estimate possible changes under specified assumptions. The Toolkit’s exposure guidance distinguishes historical, near-term, and future hazard questions.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- For what is happening now: use local weather forecasts, official hazard warnings, and emergency alerts. A long-term climate projection is not a forecast for today or an emergency warning.
- For past events: look for records from the relevant local or national agency, and note the dates and event definitions represented.
- For future conditions: record the projection period and scenario rather than treating a modeled outcome as a definite prediction.
Check what a map or score actually tells you
Before relying on a result, inspect the tool’s documentation and note the publisher, release or update date, hazard definition, geographic resolution, historical baseline, future period, scenario, and model or dataset. Also check whether the displayed result measures the hazard itself, exposure, vulnerability, or a combination. Those terms are related but not synonymous: a hazard map does not by itself show who or what is exposed, and an exposure measure does not necessarily express the vulnerability of those people or assets.

Compare tools by their jurisdiction and scale, hazards covered, time period, scenario and model basis, measure, stated limitations, and intended purpose. A public screening map, emergency-response resource, and technical planning method may all be credible while answering different questions. Differences between their outputs are not necessarily contradictions; first check whether they use the same geography, period, and definition of risk.
Switch to a hazard-specific source when needed
Once you know which hazard matters, use a source designed for it. The U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit lists NOAA’s Sea Level Rise Viewer and Coastal Flood Exposure Mapper for coastal questions, Heat.gov for heat, and Wildfire Risk to Communities for wildfire. State Climate Summaries and Climate Explorer add state and county climate context. These examples are U.S.-specific; readers elsewhere should look for equivalent official sources in their jurisdiction. Check the documentation for the particular tool rather than assuming that a map’s title explains its limits.

Know when public maps are not enough
For a property transaction, development proposal, infrastructure decision, or other consequential choice, a broad map may be too coarse to establish site conditions or satisfy local requirements. Consult the relevant local authority, and consider a qualified local practitioner when the data’s resolution or interpretation is insufficient.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMethods can depend on local rules and the decision being made. For example, England’s Environment Agency flood assessment guidance takes account of catchment, flood zone, development vulnerability, lifetime, and selected climate allowance. It is England-specific and must not be used as a planning rule elsewhere. The applicable GOV.UK guidance on flood-risk assessments and climate-change allowances explains that local context.

New Zealand’s Ministry for the Environment provides a local climate-risk assessment guide and separate coastal hazards and climate-change guidance. The Ministry’s 2024 coastal guidance states: “This guidance does not describe what will or won’t happen with climate change or sea-level rise in any specific area.” Its process can support assessment, but it is not a parcel-level prediction.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before acting on a result
- Confirm the map covers the right jurisdiction and the place at the scale you need.
- Identify the hazard and whether the result describes hazard, exposure, vulnerability, or combined risk.
- Distinguish observed history, current conditions, future projections, and emergency warnings.
- Record the map’s date, time horizon, baseline, scenario, model or dataset, and stated limitations.
- Use a hazard-specific official resource when the decision concerns a particular hazard.
- Seek local technical advice when the decision requires site-level evidence or interpretation.
