How to Find Reddit Communities and Posts Outside Reddit

Find Reddit communities and discussions with a web search, then refine your search using Reddit’s built-in result types, filters, and sorts.

To find Reddit discussions from a web search engine, start with site:reddit.com and a specific phrase from your question. Then use Reddit’s own search to narrow results by community, title, author, or date. The two routes complement each other: a web search is a quick way to discover likely threads, while Reddit offers purpose-built filters and result types.

Start with a web search

In Google or another general search engine, try site:reddit.com [topic]. Make the topic specific: add a distinctive phrase from the question, a product or place name, a likely subreddit term, or a word such as solved or recommendations. For example, search site:reddit.com raised bed tomatoes to look for discussions that mention those terms.

To focus on thread titles, try a query such as site:reddit.com intitle:"distinctive phrase". Search operators vary between engines, and external indexes can miss Reddit pages or show stale results. Treat this as a discovery shortcut, not a complete index. A Reddit community guide also recommends using Google with site:reddit.com to find Reddit contributions: Reddit’s r/YouShouldKnow guide.

Find relevant communities on Reddit

When you want a subreddit rather than a particular discussion, search a subject or synonym on Reddit and choose the Communities result type. Reddit’s search presents separate result types for posts, communities, comments, media, and people; select the one that matches what you are trying to find. If you are searching within a community, you can restrict the search to it, then switch back to results across Reddit if needed. See Reddit’s search help.

If you do not know the right term or community name, describe your interest in r/FindAReddit and ask for subreddit suggestions.

Discover Tab availability may vary

Reddit introduced the Discover Tab in 2022 as a personalized way to explore content and communities, with topic filters and feedback controls. The announcement described it as an option for discovering communities, but it does not establish that the feature’s current placement or availability is unchanged. Check the app’s current navigation rather than relying on a specific tab location. Reddit’s announcement reported that one in five people joined at least one new community after using Discover during initial testing; that is a company-reported historical test result, not a general or current rate. Read Reddit’s 2022 announcement.

Search for specific posts and comments

On Reddit, begin with a distinctive phrase from the problem or question. Add a field filter to make results more precise. Reddit documents these fields: author, flair, self, selftext, site, subreddit, title, and url. The filter name must touch its value—write author:cats, not author: cats. Put multiword values in quotation marks.

  • subreddit:gardening limits the search to that community.
  • title:"raised bed" looks for the phrase in a post title.
  • selftext:tomatoes looks in a post’s text.
  • author:reddit searches for posts by that author.
  • site:example.com targets posts linking to that site.

You can combine terms with Reddit’s case-sensitive Boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT, and use parentheses to group alternatives. For example, battery AND replacement NOT laptop excludes laptop results, while (seedling OR transplant) AND frost searches for either term alongside frost. See Reddit’s documented search filters and operators.

For advice buried inside a discussion, use comment search on the post in Reddit’s desktop site or native apps. Searching for a phrase in the comments can be more useful than opening a long thread and scanning every reply manually.

Choose a sort and time range that fit the question

After searching, set the sort according to whether you need a close match, a recent discussion, or a popular historical thread. Reddit describes these sorts and time filters in its search results help.

Sort or filter Useful for
Relevance Matching a distinctive question; Reddit says it factors in term rarity, post age, votes, and comments.
Hot Finding posts with recent activity.
Top Finding highly voted posts and discussions; you can narrow by time.
New Finding the newest posts.
Comment Count Finding posts with many comments.
Time range Choose all time, past year, month, week, 24 hours, or hour.

For information that may have changed, choose New and a short time range, then check post dates and corroborate important claims. For an evergreen how-to, start with Relevance to match the specific question; try Top when you want well-known threads. Use Comment Count when you want discussions with substantial replies, but remember that a long thread is not necessarily a reliable one.

Which search route should you use?

Route Best starting point What it offers Limitation
General search engine site:reddit.com plus a topic or exact phrase Convenient broad phrase matching and discovery across the public web. May omit Reddit pages or return stale results; it is not a complete index.
Reddit search Choose Communities, Posts, or Comments, then add a field filter or sort Reddit-specific result types, filters, community scope, and sorting options. Its tools do not establish that every Reddit item will appear in results.

A practical sequence is to search externally for the words a person might naturally use, open promising threads, and move to Reddit search if results are missing, too broad, or old. Once you find a useful community, search within it for a tighter match.
