Start by confirming any breach notice with the named organization through its official website, app, or independently verified contact details. You can also check whether your email appears in known breach records, but a clean search cannot prove your information was never exposed. If a breach is confirmed or suspected, take steps tailored to the data involved and watch for signs of misuse.
How can I check if my personal information was exposed?
- Verify the notice independently. Go to the organization’s official website or app by typing its address yourself or using a trusted bookmark. Look for its breach notice or support page. Do not rely on links or phone numbers in an unexpected email, text, or call until you confirm they belong to the organization.
- Search your email address in known breach records. Have I Been Pwned offers an email lookup and a timeline of breaches listed for an address. Its records are a useful lead, not a complete register of every exposure. Some sensitive results require proof that you control the address, and records can later be retired or removed. The service says its records cover only a small subset of all records breached over the years; breaches may never be detected or made public. A negative result therefore does not establish that your information is safe. Search an email address at Have I Been Pwned and see its frequently asked questions.
- Do not submit your password to a breach checker. An email lookup is different from checking a password. If you think a password was exposed, change it at the affected service and anywhere else you reused it. Use a password manager to create a different, strong password for each account.
A listed breach means the address appeared in records associated with that breach; it does not by itself prove someone used your information. Conversely, no listing is not proof that no exposure happened.

What should I do after a data breach notice?
The right response depends on what information was involved. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) directs consumers to What To Do After a Data Breach and IdentityTheft.gov for steps matched to the exposed information.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If a password or account login may have been exposed
- Change the password for the affected account and for any other account using the same password.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication where available. The FTC explains: “Multi-factor authentication makes it harder for scammers to log in to your accounts if they do get your username and password.”
- Review account activity and recovery settings for changes you did not make.
The FTC’s statement appears in What To Know About Identity Theft, dated September 2024.

If your Social Security number or other identity details were exposed
If a Social Security number was involved, the FTC recommends ordering free credit reports and checking for unfamiliar accounts. Follow the organization’s official breach guidance for any other exposed identifiers, such as financial or health information. If the organization offers free credit monitoring or identity-theft insurance as part of its response, you can consider whether the service fits your needs.
If financial account information was involved
Contact the bank or card issuer using the number on its official website or the back of your card. Ask what protective steps apply to the specific account, and review transactions and statements for activity you do not recognize.

- WHAT DOES IT COVER: Roll once over names, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and prescription details on mail, statements, shipping labels, and boxes before recycling. The patented 0.5" masking pattern hides 3 lines of text in one pass.
- HOW MANY USES DO YOU GET: Each pre-inked Guard Your ID Advanced Roller delivers about 1,000 impressions (roughly 100 feet of coverage), so the 3-pack gives you around 3,000. A twist-on cap keeps the ink fresh for a 2-year shelf life.
- DOES IT WORK ON GLOSSY LABELS: Yes, on most glossy and coated surfaces, plus paper, envelopes, junk mail, and prescription labels. Give the ink 10 to 15 seconds to dry on slick surfaces; it is instant on paper. Results vary by coating.
- IS IT REFILLABLE: No, and that is the point. The Advanced Roller is pre-inked and sealed, so there are no refill cartridges to buy, no ink bottles to handle, and nothing to dry out on the shelf. When one runs out, reach for the next roller.
- SHREDDER OR ROLLER: No jams, no paper dust, no noise, and the page stays intact and recyclable. Covers boxes and shipping labels a shredder cannot. Faster than a redacting marker, fits in a drawer. Turquoise, Green, White: mail, office, parent.
What warning signs should I watch for?
Check bills, bank statements, and credit reports for signs that information may already have been misused. The FTC lists warning signs such as:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Unexpected bills, charges, or withdrawals.
- Accounts on a credit report that you did not open.
- Debt-collection notices for debts that are not yours.
- Bills that stop arriving, which could indicate someone changed the billing address.
If you find evidence of identity theft, IdentityTheft.gov can create a personal recovery plan and help you report the theft and follow recovery steps.

Should I freeze my credit or place a fraud alert?
A credit freeze restricts access to your credit report for opening new credit. A fraud alert asks businesses to verify your identity before opening new credit. The FTC says freezes are free and must be placed separately with each of the three nationwide credit bureaus. For a free one-year initial fraud alert, contact any one bureau; it must notify the other two.
Consider these protections if your exposed information or warning signs create a risk of someone trying to open credit in your name. A freeze can also affect applications you make yourself, so you may need to lift it when applying for credit.

Is paid identity or credit monitoring worth it?
Monitoring services are optional, and different types cover different things. The FTC distinguishes credit monitoring, identity monitoring, and identity recovery services:
Recommended Free Tools
- Credit monitoring generally alerts you to changes reflected in credit reports. It may not alert you to bank withdrawals or tax-return fraud.
- Identity monitoring may scan additional databases, but may not detect misuse involving some government benefits.
- Recovery services may help with letters, freezes, or case management; some of those steps can also be done independently.
Before paying, ask which credit bureaus are monitored, how often reports are checked, what events trigger alerts, whether recovery help is included, and what the service costs. The FTC notes that free credit reports are another way to monitor credit. These services do not replace securing affected accounts or checking for unfamiliar activity. See the FTC’s Data Breach Response: A Guide for Business for its breach-response guidance.
