How do I compare phone deals?
Use the same expected holding period for every offer—for example, the 24 months you expect to keep the phone. Separate the cost of the device from wireless service, and note the conditions attached to any discount.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Identify the exact offer. Record the seller, phone model and storage configuration, advertised retail price, amount financed, and any required trade-in.
- Write down what is due at checkout. Include a down payment, taxes, activation or upgrade charges, and other mandatory fees shown for that offer.
- Calculate device payments over your chosen period. Record the monthly installment and number of installments. If the installment term is longer than your planned holding period, do not count payments outside that period as though they were already paid; separately note the balance that could remain.
- Add the incremental service cost. Include the required plan’s monthly price over the same period, but count only the amount above what you would otherwise pay for service. If you would keep the same plan at the same price, it is not an extra cost created by the phone deal.
- Subtract only credits you expect to earn. Note the credit amount, when credits begin, how long they last, and the plan, line, trade-in, or account conditions. Do not count credits that rely on a condition you do not expect to maintain.
- Check the exit and return terms. Find out what happens to credits and the remaining device balance if you cancel, change plans, pay off early, or return the new phone. Read the trade-in terms separately.
A useful comparison formula is:
Expected outlay = upfront device amount + taxes and required fees + device installments during your chosen period + extra required service-plan cost during that period − promotional credits you expect to receive.
Show the time horizon and assumptions beside each result. This is an estimate of outlay over that period, not necessarily the full cost of owning the phone: if the installment term continues beyond your horizon, account for the remaining balance when considering an early exit.

Is a free phone really free?
Usually, “free” describes the device price after qualifying bill credits, not a promise that you owe nothing under every circumstance. A deal may spread credits across a long installment term and require a qualifying plan or active line. If you stop meeting the conditions, future credits may stop while the device balance remains payable.
For example, AT&T’s U.S. offer page lists an iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max discount of up to $1,200 after 36 monthly bill credits, with a qualifying trade-in and eligible Premium 2.0 plan. The listed minimum single-line plan price for that offer is $100 per month before taxes and fees. AT&T says credits start within three bills, may be reduced or stopped if the plan is lowered, and stop if service is canceled; the remaining device balance is then due. The page also lists tax on the full retail price and a $35 activation or upgrade fee. These are offer-specific terms, not a general estimate of what any AT&T customer will pay. Check the live AT&T offer terms for the exact model, plan, and checkout details.

Keep financing and service in separate columns. AT&T’s installment agreement describes its device transaction as 0% APR with no finance charge, interest, origination fee, or other cost under that agreement, and says the total of payments equals the amount financed. That does not make the required wireless plan free; service charges are separate. Read the AT&T installment terms alongside the offer.

What happens to phone bill credits if I switch carriers?
Credits are generally conditional, so the cost of leaving early can include both a device balance and promotional value you will no longer receive. Before accepting a deal, identify the line tied to the installment agreement, whether the credit requires a particular plan, and what the agreement says about cancellation or payoff.

Verizon’s device-payment FAQ says monthly promotional credits stop when the device is paid off, and disconnecting the associated line can make the remaining balance billable. Its support page also distinguishes the device installment agreement from the separate customer or service agreement. For a Verizon offer, use the device payment FAQs to check the consequences that apply to the specific agreement.
To compare a promotion with a different carrier’s offer, calculate what you would actually pay if you stay for your planned period. Then identify the remaining balance and unearned credits if you might switch sooner. Do not treat credits as guaranteed savings when your plans may cause them to stop.

Is it better to trade in my phone or sell it?
Compare the trade-in amount you can realistically qualify for with the net amount you expect from selling the phone yourself. A trade-in may be convenient, but its advertised value can depend on eligibility, condition, timing, and inspection. A private sale may involve more work and its proceeds are not established by the trade-in offer, so compare actual available options rather than assuming one route always pays more.
Before sending a phone, check the exact promotion’s model and condition criteria, required preparation, shipping or hand-in deadline, and what happens if inspection changes the valuation. Samsung’s U.S. trade-in terms, for example, require shipping the old device within 15 days of receiving the new one. The eligibility rules cover whether it powers on and charges, display and device condition, ownership, removal of anti-theft locks, a factory reset, and FCC ID. Samsung says a late device may result in a chargeback of the trade-in value; under its standard terms, an ineligible device can receive a $25 valuation with a charge for the remainder of the applied trade-in amount. The specific promotion may have different requirements, so consult the terms attached to that offer and Samsung’s U.S. trade-in terms.

Can I return a phone after trading in my old one?
Returning the new phone and recovering the old one are separate questions. Read the seller’s return policy and the trade-in terms together, especially if you are relying on a short window to test the new device.
Samsung’s U.S. trade-in terms say a submitted trade-in cannot be returned, even if the new device is returned. That means returning the new phone should not be assumed to reverse the trade-in. Confirm the exact promotion’s rules before shipping the old device.
Return windows and fees differ by seller and offer. AT&T’s current offer page states a 14-day return window and a possible restocking fee of up to $55. Those terms are specific to the listed offer and can change; verify the policy, device-condition requirements, and return channel for the purchase you are making on AT&T’s offer page.
