A delay does not mean a game has been canceled, and a long silence does not prove development has stopped. Check the developer’s or publisher’s latest dated statements, look for specific evidence of work, and distinguish a postponed release from a pause or an explicit cancellation. If the official record is unclear, report the last verified update and treat the current status as uncertain.
Check official sources first
Search the exact game title alongside its developer or publisher. Open the studio’s own news or blog and the publisher’s announcements rather than relying on search-result snippets, community posts, or reposts.

- Read the developer and publisher’s latest updates. Note the date and the exact wording about the game’s status.
- Check the game’s official store page and news feed. Steam and other platform pages can surface announcements, but a listing or planned release date alone does not show that development is active.
- Look at other official project channels. These may include the project website, the team’s social accounts, Discord announcements, or crowdfunding updates. Prefer dated statements from the team or publisher.
- Compare the newest statement with older plans. Check whether a date or release window was replaced, whether the team says work is continuing, or whether it describes a pause or termination.
- Record the evidence and its date. Include the status phrase, any concrete work mentioned, and qualifications such as “no new date yet.” If no official source resolves the question, say so rather than making a definitive claim.
Understand what the status terms mean
Delayed
A delay changes the planned release timing; it does not by itself establish whether development continues or has stopped. Look for both a revised date or window and evidence of ongoing work. In a June 17, 2025 update, Bungie delayed Marathon and also described planned closed tests and development priorities, showing how a delay can be accompanied by evidence of continued work: Bungie’s update.

A hiatus may stop builds or public updates without ending the project. Look for a statement about whether the game is canceled, what conditions might bring work back, and whether the team gives a return plan. In an official Steam announcement dated April 15, 2026, PixelPunk Studios said Raveren was not canceled while stating that no new builds or updates would be released during the hiatus: PixelPunk’s announcement.

Canceled, terminated, or production suspended indefinitely
An explicit statement from the developer or publisher is the strongest evidence that a project has ended or been suspended. For example, Spearhead Games said on March 25, 2024, that it had suspended production of Unforetold: Witchstone indefinitely, described layoffs, and said the game was unfinished: Spearhead Games’ announcement. The studio also discussed refunds and delisting, but store availability and development status are separate facts: a game’s presence or absence in a store does not by itself establish whether work is continuing.
Inactive or uncertain
A long gap in updates, an old release date, or an unavailable store page can prompt a status check, but none alone proves cancellation. A 2025 study of successful video-game Kickstarter campaigns retained an ambiguous category for projects that did not fit its other classifications. That is a useful approach when the available evidence does not support a clear yes or no: the study’s abstract.

Weigh the evidence, not just the activity level
Assess a project using several signals together. An infrequently updated team may still be working, while a polished store page may simply be out of date.

- Recency: Use the newest status statement you can verify. Dates, test plans, staffing arrangements, and store listings can change.
- Clarity: Explicit language such as “not canceled,” “on hiatus,” or “production suspended indefinitely” is more useful than vague promises.
- Evidence of work: Testing, builds, feature development, staffing, or revised plans can support a claim that work is continuing, provided the source is official and dated.
- Status and plans: Separate the game’s development status from its release schedule. A revised or missing date does not answer whether the project is active.
A release-delay study by Grewal, Lin, Doucet, and Bezemer examined 23,485 Steam games and found that 48% had a delayed initial release; among games that were delayed, the median delay was 14 days. Those historical figures provide broad context about release schedules, not a way to determine the status of a particular game: the study’s abstract.

A separate 2025 analysis examined 1,967 video-game Kickstarter campaigns, including 531 successful campaigns. Its classifications apply to that campaign sample; they are not a universal test for whether any game is still in development: the study’s abstract.

State what the latest official source says and when it was published. For example: “The developer’s latest update, dated [date], says the release is delayed and describes [specific work]. It does not give a new release date. I could not verify a newer official status statement, so the game’s current development status remains uncertain.” Replace the bracketed details with the source’s actual wording; do not present the example as a finding about a particular game.
