How to Find or Reset Your phpMyAdmin Username and Password

phpMyAdmin normally uses a MySQL or MariaDB account rather than its own credentials. Find the account in your hosting panel, local stack, or config.inc.php, then reset and update it safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

phpMyAdmin usually has no separate account or password. It signs in to MySQL or MariaDB with a database user, so the username and password you need are the credentials for that database account. Find the account in your hosting panel, local development stack, or config.inc.php; if you still have an administrator login, reset it with ALTER USER, then update every application and configuration file that uses the old password.

What your phpMyAdmin login actually is

phpMyAdmin is a web interface for MySQL and MariaDB. In the normal setup, it does not create a second identity system. The login prompt is asking for a database account that the database server recognizes. On a local installation, that account is often root. On shared hosting, it is more commonly a database user created and assigned to a site in the host’s control panel.

This distinction explains why changing a password in one place can leave phpMyAdmin, a content-management system, and command-line tools disagreeing. The password belongs to the MySQL or MariaDB account. phpMyAdmin merely stores or requests that credential, depending on its authentication mode.

Check phpMyAdmin’s authentication mode first

The setting named auth_type in config.inc.php determines whether phpMyAdmin asks you for credentials or supplies them from its configuration. The phpMyAdmin documentation describes cookie as the default mode and config as the mode that stores a username and password in the configuration file.

Authentication mode What you see Where the credentials come from
cookie A login form appears when phpMyAdmin opens. You enter a MySQL or MariaDB username and password each session. The user and password entries in the server block are not used for the login.
config phpMyAdmin may open without showing a login form. The username and password are read from $cfg['Servers'][$i]['user'] and $cfg['Servers'][$i]['password'] in config.inc.php.
Other modes Behavior depends on the installed phpMyAdmin version and web-server integration. Follow the configuration for that installation; do not assume the file contains a usable password.

Do not edit a password in config.inc.php until you know the file is being used. In cookie mode, changing a stored value there will not change the database account and will not fix a rejected login.

Find the username and password by installation type

Local XAMPP, MAMP, WAMP, or a similar stack

Local bundles commonly use the MySQL root account. Some installations initially leave that account’s password blank, while others set one during installation or provide a stack-specific default. A blank password is not the same as a missing account: in a cookie-mode login, leave the password field empty only if you know that the server account has no password.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the stack’s database settings, documentation, or existing application configuration to identify the host, port, username, and password. MAMP’s documented workflow, for example, changes the password in MySQL and then changes the corresponding phpMyAdmin configuration. The exact file location varies by operating system and bundle version.

  • Look for the database section of the stack’s control panel and note the server port.
  • Inspect the site’s own configuration file for a database host, user, and password. A working application often reveals which account it uses.
  • Check phpMyAdmin’s config.inc.php only after identifying the active server block and auth_type.
  • If the account is root and the password was never set, test an empty password only on a private development machine, never on an exposed server.

Shared or managed hosting

Open the hosting dashboard’s database area—often labelled MySQL Databases, Database Users, or a similar name. Find the user assigned to the database used by your site. The panel may display the username but normally will not reveal the current password. Instead, it provides a change-password action.

On shared hosting, use that panel rather than attempting to edit system tables or stop the database server. The provider controls the database service, and its panel applies the provider’s required username format, permissions, and password policy. After changing the password, update the site’s configuration file and any scheduled jobs that connect with the same account.

Docker and other containerized setups

Read the container definition, environment file, or secret store that starts MySQL or MariaDB. Variables such as an application user, root password, or database password may be passed when the container is created. A value in a compose file can be stale if the database volume was initialized earlier: changing the environment variable alone does not necessarily change an existing database account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the account inside the running database, the host name visible from the phpMyAdmin container, and the port exposed between containers. A correct password sent to the wrong host can produce the same “access denied” message as a bad password.

Read config.inc.php carefully

Search the active phpMyAdmin configuration for these entries:

$cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type']
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['host']
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['port']
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['user']
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['password']

The user and password values identify a database account only when the server’s auth_type is config. If the mode is cookie, the file can show no usable password at all, because the user supplies it at the login form. A configuration can also contain several $i server blocks, so make sure you are reading the block for the server you actually open.

Treat a password in this file as a secret. Restrict the file’s permissions, do not publish it in a screenshot or repository, and remember that web-server backups may contain older copies.

Before changing anything, identify the exact account

A MySQL account includes both a user name and a host part. 'admin'@'localhost' and 'admin'@'127.0.0.1' can be different accounts with different passwords and privileges. The account in the reset statement must match the account phpMyAdmin uses.

  • Record the database host and port shown in phpMyAdmin’s configuration or hosting panel.
  • Record the exact username, including any hosting-provider prefix.
  • Determine whether phpMyAdmin connects as localhost, an IP address, a container service name, or another host value.
  • List applications, scripts, backups, and monitoring tools that use the same account.
  • Make a recovery plan before changing a production credential; a password change can interrupt every dependent service until its configuration is updated.

Reset the password through a hosting control panel

If your provider offers a database-user password form, it is usually the safest route for shared or managed hosting. The labels differ, but the sequence is generally:

  1. Open the control panel’s database section.
  2. Select the database user assigned to the site, not merely the database name.
  3. Choose Change Password, Set Password, or the equivalent action.
  4. Generate or enter a strong password and save it in a password manager.
  5. Update the site’s database settings, phpMyAdmin’s configuration if it uses auth_type = 'config', and every other client using that account.
  6. Open phpMyAdmin and sign in with the database username and new password, or reload it if config authentication is used.

Provider-specific steps and password rules differ. If the panel refuses a password or the user is not listed, contact the host rather than trying to stop or reconfigure its database service.

Reset it with SQL when you still have an administrator account

Run the reset from a session that has permission to alter the target account. You can use an administrator account in phpMyAdmin’s SQL tab, the MySQL command-line client, or another trusted database client. The MySQL 5.7 Windows guide gives this form:

ALTER USER 'root'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'MyNewPass';

Replace root, localhost, and MyNewPass with the actual account, host part, and new password. The command is an example of MySQL 5.7 syntax; MySQL 8.x, MariaDB, and some managed services can differ, so confirm the statement for your server version before running it.

Using phpMyAdmin’s SQL tab

  1. Sign in with an account that can alter users. The account you are resetting may not have that privilege.
  2. Select the SQL tab rather than selecting a table.
  3. Enter the ALTER USER statement with the exact account and host.
  4. Execute it and read the result. A success message means the server accepted the change; a syntax, privilege, or account-not-found error means you must stop and correct the account or method.
  5. Sign out, then test the new credentials in a fresh phpMyAdmin session.

Using the command line

Connect to the same MySQL or MariaDB server that phpMyAdmin uses, specifying its host and port when they are not the defaults. After authenticating as an administrator, run the statement and exit. If the command-line client connects to a different local socket or container than phpMyAdmin, the reset will affect the wrong server and appear not to work.

Do not put a real password in shell history, a shared terminal transcript, or a script committed to source control. Use a protected secret mechanism where one is available.

Update phpMyAdmin and every dependent application

Changing the server account succeeds immediately, but clients that still hold the old password will fail on their next connection. Update all of the following that apply:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • config.inc.php, but only when its authentication mode is config.
  • Your site’s environment file or application configuration, including CMS, framework, and command-line maintenance settings.
  • Background workers, cron jobs, import/export scripts, backup tools, and monitoring checks.
  • Container secrets, deployment variables, orchestration manifests, and managed-secret entries.
  • Local development tools and database clients used by your team.

Restart or reload services that keep persistent database connections. A PHP request that creates a new connection will usually see the new password immediately, while a long-running worker may retain a connection or cached configuration until it is restarted.

When you cannot log in as any administrator

If no account with sufficient privileges remains, the normal ALTER USER route cannot work. The MySQL 5.7 Windows documentation describes a recovery process that stops the server and edits the user table directly. A common variant starts the server with skip-grant-tables, which disables password checks.

Use this only on a machine you control and only when you understand the service-management and filesystem steps for that installation. While grant tables are skipped, anyone who can reach the database service may be able to connect without normal authentication. Disconnect the machine from untrusted networks, stop the server as soon as the recovery work is complete, restart it normally, and set a real password immediately.

Why this fallback is risky

  • It bypasses authentication rather than safely changing one credential.
  • Editing system tables directly can damage account metadata or fail on a different server version.
  • Stopping the server interrupts every application using that database.
  • A forgotten abnormal startup option can leave the server running without password protection.

On shared hosting or a managed service, do not attempt this procedure. Ask the provider to recover or reset the database user.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Diagnose “Access denied for user” after a reset

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The new password works in one client but not phpMyAdmin. phpMyAdmin is pointed at another host, port, or server block. Compare host, port, and the selected $i block in config.inc.php with the client that succeeded.
phpMyAdmin immediately logs in with an old password. auth_type is config and the file still contains the old value. Update the stored password, protect the file, and reload phpMyAdmin.
The login form rejects the new password. The username or host part does not match the account that was altered. Check the exact account, such as 'user'@'localhost' versus 'user'@'127.0.0.1'.
ALTER USER returns a privilege error. The session is not an administrator or does not have permission to alter that account. Connect with a properly privileged account or use the hosting panel.
The site fails while phpMyAdmin works. The site’s configuration still has the old password, or a worker has cached it. Update application secrets and restart long-running workers.
The account is reported as unknown. The username-host combination does not exist on that server. Confirm the database server and account list with the provider or an administrator.

Verify the result without exposing the credential

  1. Close existing phpMyAdmin sessions and open a fresh private browser window.
  2. Connect to the intended host and port with the exact database username and new password.
  3. Open a harmless database view or run a read-only query to confirm the session is using the expected account.
  4. Test the website and any critical background jobs.
  5. Review logs for repeated authentication failures, which can indicate an overlooked script still using the old password.

Do not test by displaying the password in a query, echoing it into a page, or adding it to a diagnostic log. Once the reset is confirmed, remove temporary recovery files and restore normal server startup options.

Prevent the next lockout

  • Store database credentials in a password manager or protected secret store, not in a public repository.
  • Use a dedicated application user with only the permissions the application needs; reserve administrative accounts for administration.
  • Document the database host, port, account name, and owning site without documenting the plaintext password.
  • Record where each client stores the credential so a future rotation can be completed in one maintenance window.
  • Keep a tested recovery account or provider support path for systems you administer, and restrict database network access.
  • After changing a password, search deployment variables, scheduled tasks, and backups for stale copies and rotate or invalidate them as appropriate.

Which reset path should you choose?

Your situation Best first action Avoid
Shared or managed hosting Change the database user’s password in the hosting panel, then update the site. Stopping the provider’s server or editing its system tables.
Local development with a known administrator Run ALTER USER against the exact account and host, then update clients. Changing only a phpMyAdmin configuration value.
phpMyAdmin uses config authentication Confirm the server account, reset it if needed, and update both server credentials and config.inc.php. Assuming the file’s password is authoritative when the database account was changed elsewhere.
No administrator access on a machine you control Use the version-specific documented recovery procedure with the server isolated, then restart normally and set a password. Leaving skip-grant-tables enabled or using the procedure on a provider-managed server.
Unclear host, port, or username Identify the active server block and the account assigned to the site before changing anything. Resetting a similarly named account on a different server.

Key takeaway

When you forget a “phpMyAdmin password,” recover the MySQL or MariaDB account rather than looking for a separate phpMyAdmin account. Identify the exact username and host, use the hosting panel or a correctly privileged ALTER USER statement, update every client that stores the credential, and reserve grant-table recovery for an isolated machine you control. The phpMyAdmin configuration page at docs.phpmyadmin.net explains how authentication mode affects the configuration file; the applicable MySQL or MariaDB version documentation should govern any recovery syntax that differs from the MySQL 5.7 example.
