No separate app is needed. If the tools below are missing, update WhatsApp on your Android phone or iPhone first. Custom packs depend on a recent version.
Find stickers
Start in the sticker tray: open a chat, tap the emoji icon, then switch to the sticker tab. You can browse stickers and packs there. If someone sends you a sticker you like, you can add it to one of your own packs (see below).

Newer discovery features
- Text stickers. In January 2026, Meta announced: “You can also now turn any word on WhatsApp into a sticker by typing your text into Sticker Search.” New stickers can be added straight to a pack (Meta Newsroom, January 7, 2026).
- Emoji-to-sticker suggestions. Meta has also announced suggestions that let you swap an emoji for a matching sticker as you type. Rollout can vary, so you may not see it yet.
Make a sticker from a photo
- Open a chat and tap the emoji icon, then the sticker tab.
- Tap Create.
- Go through Recents and See more to reach Photos, then pick an existing image or take a new photo.
- In the preview, add a sticker or emoji, text, or a drawing.
- Send the finished sticker.
This follows the route in WhatsApp’s Help Center article on creating and sharing custom stickers and packs. Labels can differ slightly between app versions and platforms.
Make an AI sticker
- From the emoji and sticker tray, tap Create, then Generate with AI.
- Type a description of the sticker.
- WhatsApp may offer up to four options. Pick one to send, or revise your prompt and try again.
Availability is limited by country, according to the current Help Center. Descriptions are supported in English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish. If you don’t see Generate with AI, the feature probably isn’t available for your account yet.

Keep stickers together in a pack
- Long-press a sticker, either in the tray or in a chat.
- Choose Add to sticker pack.
- Select an existing pack, or create a new one and name it.
To rearrange an existing pack, open it in the pack editor, select stickers and move them into the pack. Packs hold up to 30 stickers.
Share a pack
- Open the individual or group chat you want to send it to.
- Open emoji and stickers.
- Use the more-options menu next to the pack and choose Send.
Meta announced the feature on April 16, 2025: “You can now create your own sticker packs and share them directly in your chats, so your friends and family can all use your custom stickers to express themselves.”

File limits for prepared stickers
If you build stickers outside WhatsApp’s own tools, for example in an image editor or a third-party sticker-maker app, the Help Center lists these limits. The built-in photo workflow above doesn’t make you handle these details manually.

A pack must be entirely static or entirely animated, so you can’t mix the two. Stickers must also be legal, authorized to use, and acceptable under WhatsApp’s terms.

Built-in tools or a separate app?
For most people the built-in tools are enough: they cover photos, emoji, text, drawing, AI generation and pack sharing. A separate sticker-maker app is optional. It mainly makes sense if you want to prepare many stickers at once or need more advanced editing than the in-app preview offers. WhatsApp’s own developer documentation treats sticker-maker apps as an alternative route for creating packs. Check any app’s privacy terms and current availability yourself before installing it, since those details change.

If something is missing
- No Create button or pack options: update WhatsApp from Google Play or the App Store.
- No Generate with AI: likely a country or rollout limit.
- Imported sticker rejected: check the size, file-size and animation-length limits in the table, and that the pack doesn’t mix static and animated stickers.
