The fastest way to find a Minecraft item ID is to identify your edition first, then type /give @s and use the in-game completion list. Java Edition uses namespaced identifiers such as minecraft:stick. Bedrock Edition also accepts textual item names, but its older numerical IDs still appear in some JSON UI, runtime-texture, and add-on workflows. The correct identifier depends on your edition, game version, and whether you are working with vanilla commands or custom content.

What an item ID is—and why the edition matters
An item ID is the identifier Minecraft uses to refer to an item in a command, data file, datapack, or add-on. In modern command usage, that identifier is normally a namespaced text value. A stick, for example, is written as minecraft:stick. The namespace prevents collisions between vanilla content and custom content supplied by a datapack or add-on.

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition have different command implementations and documentation. Bedrock also retains numerical or runtime values for particular internal systems. Before copying an ID, establish all three of these details:
- Edition: Java or Bedrock.
- Version: the exact release running your world or server.
- Purpose: a chat command, command block, datapack, resource-pack or add-on file, JSON UI, or runtime texture slot.
An identifier that works in a Java command is not automatically valid in Bedrock, and a legacy Bedrock number is not a drop-in replacement for a modern textual command identifier.

Java Edition: find an ID with autocomplete
The in-game completion menu is the most reliable source for a Java command because it is generated by the exact server or single-player world you are currently running. The example below uses the modern Java syntax introduced before and retained in Java 1.20.5 and later; check the completion list on your own patch before putting the command in a datapack.
Use /give completion
- Make sure commands are enabled. In a Java single-player world, Mojang documents enabling commands when creating the world or later through World Options.
- Open chat and type
/give @s, including the space after@s. - Press the key used for command completion on your platform. The suggestions show valid item identifiers for that running world. Select the item rather than guessing its spelling.
- Keep the namespace when it appears. A vanilla result normally looks like
minecraft:stick, not juststick. - Test a small quantity, such as
/give @s minecraft:stick 1. If the command succeeds, the selected item name is valid for that version.
Autocomplete is especially useful after a major update, when an item has been renamed, split into variants, or added with a different identifier. It also exposes IDs supplied by installed datapacks, which may not appear in a generic vanilla list.
Inspect the item already in your hand
If you possess the exact item, hold it in your main hand and run:
/data get entity @s SelectedItem
Java prints the held stack’s stored structure. The result includes the item ID and can also reveal count, components, and custom data. This is useful when you received an item from a map, datapack, or command and need to reproduce it.
Java 1.20.5 changed the storage format: item components replaced the older item-tag layout. A tutorial written for a pre-1.20.5 release may show a tag compound, while a current result displays components. The identifier itself is still obtained from the returned item structure, but any copied metadata must match the format of the version you are running.

Confirm the result before building a larger command
Run a one-item test first. Once the basic ID works, add a quantity or other arguments. For example, with the same Java 1.20.5-or-newer syntax:
/give @s minecraft:stick 1
Testing the unmodified item separates an ID problem from a syntax problem in later arguments such as components. If the item is not granted, read the red chat error: it may indicate an unknown item, a missing argument, disabled commands, or malformed component data.
Bedrock Edition: use completion and Microsoft’s item references
Bedrock’s command parser supplies the quickest answer for a command in the current game. Microsoft’s documentation provides the authoritative cross-check when you are writing a command outside the game or working on an add-on.
Find a command identifier in chat
- Enable cheats as required for the world. In Bedrock single-player, Mojang calls this permission Allow Cheats in the Game settings. Mojang explicitly warns that turning on cheats disables achievements in that world.
- Open chat and enter
/give @s, leaving the trailing space. - Choose an item from the completion list. The displayed spelling is the one the current Bedrock command parser accepts.
- Test it with a small quantity. For example, use the item name selected by your game in a command such as
/give @s minecraft:stick 1when the completion list shows that namespaced form.
Do not assume that a Java-only argument or data format will work after the item name. Bedrock command syntax differs in selectors, data values, and item components, so validate the complete command in a Bedrock world.
Cross-check the spelling in official lists
For documentation and add-on work, compare the in-game result with Microsoft Learn’s Item enum. Microsoft describes that enum as a source used by commands including clear, give, and replaceitem. The enum page was listed as last updated on 2025-08-07.

Microsoft Learn also maintains Default Minecraft Item Listings, a separate catalog of vanilla items. That page was listed as last updated on 2026-08-25. Use the listing that matches your target edition and release, then test the identifier in the same Bedrock version that will run the command. A documentation page can be updated after your installed client, preview build, or server has changed.
Why Bedrock achievements are part of the decision
Allow Cheats is not merely a command toggle. Mojang’s documented behavior is that enabling it in a Bedrock single-player world disables achievements for that world. If achievements matter, make a copy of the world or use a separate test world before enabling the setting.
Which identifier belongs in each common task?
The item name is only one part of the solution. The command or file format determines what else must be supplied.
| Task | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition | How to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Give an item | Use the item ID selected after /give @s , commonly a namespaced value such as minecraft:stick. |
Use the item name offered by Bedrock completion; cross-check Microsoft’s Item enum. | Run a one-item /give test. |
| Clear an item | Use the same valid item ID in the Java /clear syntax for your version. |
Use the Bedrock item name documented in the Item enum. | Test against one player and a known quantity. |
| Replace an inventory slot | Use the Java item ID and Java slot/component syntax. | Use the Bedrock item name and Bedrock slot syntax; do not paste Java arguments. | Test in a disposable world or with a nonvaluable item. |
| Command block | Paste the same command that succeeded in chat, adjusted for the block’s executor and selectors. | Paste the Bedrock command that succeeded in chat. | Run the command manually first. |
| Datapack | Use Java identifiers and the data format for the target Java release. Java 1.20.5+ uses components instead of the older item-tag layout. | Bedrock does not use Java datapacks; use the appropriate behavior-pack or add-on format. | Load the pack in the exact target version and inspect errors. |
| Add-on, JSON UI, or runtime texture work | Follow the Java resource or data format required by that project. | Determine whether the file expects a textual type ID or a numerical/runtime value before entering anything. | Check the project’s schema and test in the matching Bedrock build. |
The table deliberately separates command identifiers from internal values. The same visible item can be represented differently depending on the subsystem that reads it.

Are Minecraft item IDs still numeric?
For ordinary modern commands, use a textual item identifier. Numerical IDs are a legacy Bedrock concern rather than a universal replacement for names such as minecraft:stick.

Where Bedrock numbers still appear
Older Bedrock documentation and tooling use numerical or runtime IDs in areas such as JSON UI and runtime texture slots. Those values are internal slots, not a promise that a number can be entered wherever a command expects an item name.
The Bedrock Wiki’s numerical-ID reference documents the vanilla range and explains that raw-ID placement can be affected by custom add-on items. That reference was current for Bedrock version 26.50. A number copied from it may therefore be unsuitable for a different release, pack set, or load order.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsText ID versus numerical/runtime ID
- Textual type ID: the name used by modern command syntax and many content definitions, such as
minecraft:stick. - Legacy numerical ID: an older or subsystem-specific value, mainly encountered in Bedrock JSON UI and runtime texture contexts.
- Runtime value: a value assigned or interpreted at runtime and potentially affected by version and installed add-ons.
When a guide gives you a number, first identify the file or API that consumes it. If the target is a chat command, start over with autocomplete and obtain the textual item name instead.

Pin the exact release
An item name can remain stable while its surrounding command syntax changes. Java’s 1.20.5 item-component migration is a concrete example: older tutorials may still be correct about the base ID but wrong about the metadata structure. Record the full version in your notes, including a preview or snapshot label when applicable.
Account for custom content
A datapack or add-on can introduce its own namespace or alter which identifiers are available. Autocomplete reflects content loaded in the current world, making it safer than copying a list prepared for a different pack set. For a custom item, retain the namespace shown by the completion menu; do not replace it with minecraft:.
Best Value
Do not treat resource-pack order as a universal ID source
Resource packs can change models, textures, and presentation without changing the command identifier. A texture slot or runtime number used by a Bedrock UI file can be affected by pack and add-on ordering, while the textual command ID remains the value exposed by the command parser. Keep those two jobs separate when debugging.

The completion list is empty
- Check that you typed the command prefix and a trailing space:
/give @s. - Confirm commands are enabled. Java uses the world’s command permission; Bedrock uses Allow Cheats.
- Make sure you are actually in the edition you think you are. A Java tutorial cannot be validated in Bedrock by changing only the namespace.
- Check whether a server or realm restricts command permissions even when the client has cheats enabled.
The ID looks right but the command fails
- Run the smallest possible command with one item and no optional data.
- Read the complete error message. “Unknown item” points to an ID or version mismatch; an error farther along the command points to syntax or argument differences.
- Remove copied Java components, NBT, or data values from a Bedrock command, or remove old
tagsyntax from a Java 1.20.5-or-newer item command. - Retest in a clean world without add-ons. If the clean test works, add packs back one at a time.
A copied number produces the wrong result
Stop using the number unless the target file explicitly requires a numerical/runtime value. Confirm the Bedrock version, installed add-ons, and the documented subsystem. For a normal /give, return to textual autocomplete and use the name it supplies.
The held-item output is different from a tutorial
Compare the tutorial’s Java release with yours. In Java 1.20.5 and later, /data get entity @s SelectedItem reports components where older releases used an item tag. Copy the ID from the returned structure, then rewrite metadata in the syntax required by your release.
A repeatable workflow for commands, maps, and add-ons
Use this checklist whenever you need an identifier that another person can reproduce:
- Write down the edition and exact version.
- State whether the target is chat, a command block, a Java datapack, a Bedrock behavior pack, JSON UI, or a runtime texture system.
- Use autocomplete in a test world to obtain the current textual name.
- For a held item in Java, run
/data get entity @s SelectedItemand save the relevant structure. - Cross-check Bedrock names against Microsoft’s Item enum and Default Minecraft Item Listings, noting their update dates.
- Run a one-item command before adding quantity, selectors, components, or custom data.
- Record the namespace, version, and installed pack set next to the finished command.
This procedure prevents the most common failure: using a valid identifier from the wrong edition, release, or subsystem.
Quick examples
Java Edition 1.20.5 or newer
/give @s minecraft:stick 1
/data get entity @s SelectedItem
The first command tests a namespaced item ID. The second inspects whatever is currently held and reports the component-based structure used by this Java release family.
Bedrock Edition
/give @s
Stop after the trailing space, choose the item from Bedrock’s completion menu, and then add the quantity shown by your version’s syntax. Cross-check the selected name in Microsoft Learn’s Item enum before putting it into a behavior pack or documentation.
Sources and update boundaries
Mojang’s guidance covers where to enable Java commands and explains that Bedrock’s single-player permission is the Game-tab setting named Allow Cheats; enabling it disables achievements in that world. Microsoft Learn’s Item enum was listed as updated 2025-08-07, and its Default Minecraft Item Listings page was listed as updated 2026-08-25. The Bedrock Wiki numerical-ID reference was current for Bedrock 26.50. Treat each date as the boundary of that page’s maintenance, not as a guarantee that every later preview or add-on uses identical data.
