To craft a furnace in Minecraft, open a crafting table, place eight cobblestone blocks around the outside eight squares of the 3×3 grid, leave the center empty, and take the furnace from the result slot. Place it, put a smeltable item in the top input slot, and add coal, charcoal, or another valid fuel to the bottom slot. The finished item appears in the output slot on the right. What a furnace does
A regular furnace is Minecraft’s general-purpose smelting and cooking block. It transforms an accepted input into a different output while consuming fuel. Common jobs include cooking raw food, smelting raw iron or raw gold into metal, converting cobblestone into stone, and turning logs into charcoal.

The recipe produces one furnace. In versions that support them, blackstone or deepslate can serve as alternatives to cobblestone. Availability of those alternatives can depend on the edition or version, so the recipe book is the safest confirmation for a particular world.

Furnace crafting recipe

- Interact with the crafting table to open its 3×3 grid.
- Put cobblestone in all eight perimeter squares.
- Leave the middle square blank.
- Move the furnace from the result box into your inventory.
A two-by-two personal crafting grid cannot make this recipe because it has no perimeter arrangement large enough for the eight-block pattern. If the result does not appear, verify that the center is empty and that every surrounding square contains an accepted furnace material.
How to place and open the furnace
- Select the furnace in your hotbar.
- Use the place action on a suitable block face.
- Use the interact action on the placed furnace to open its interface.
The interface has three functional slots:
- Input, top: the raw item, ore, block, or food that has a furnace recipe.
- Fuel, bottom: a burnable item accepted by the furnace.
- Output, right: the completed result, which you collect when processing finishes.
Place the input and fuel in their respective slots. The furnace consumes fuel as necessary, advances the smelting operation, and puts the completed item in the output slot. A recipe cannot run if the item is in the wrong slot, the fuel is invalid, or there is no furnace recipe for the input.
Step-by-step: smelt or cook an item
- Open the furnace.
- Put the item you want to transform in the upper input slot.
- Put a valid fuel in the lower fuel slot.
- Wait for the progress indicator to complete.
- Take the result from the right-hand output slot.
For a batch, place multiple compatible input items in the input slot and enough fuel below them. The furnace processes the stack one item at a time. If the output slot fills, processing cannot continue until you remove finished items.
What you can put in a regular furnace
The exact recipe list depends on edition and version, but these are the core uses documented for a regular furnace:

Choosing furnace fuel
Coal and charcoal are straightforward general-purpose fuels. A regular furnace smelts eight items per coal or charcoal. That figure comes from the cited Minecraft gameplay guides and describes normal furnace operation, not an independent laboratory test.

Use the fuel’s burn time to match the size of your batch: a small batch may not justify loading a long-burning item, while a large batch can leave less unused burn time when you choose a fuel that lasts through several operations.

Do not assume that every item that looks wooden is accepted as fuel, or that all accepted fuels last the same length of time. If the furnace refuses an item in the fuel slot, replace it with a known valid fuel such as coal or charcoal.
How long smelting takes
A regular furnace takes 10 seconds for each item. This is the gameplay figure reported by the cited Minecraft Wiki beginner guide. It applies per item, so a stack takes roughly the number of items multiplied by 10 seconds while the furnace remains supplied with fuel and has room for output.
The furnace does not partially smelt an item. If you remove the input, the fuel runs out, or you break the furnace before the current operation completes, the input remains unchanged and progress pauses rather than producing a partly transformed item. Restore a valid input and fuel, then allow the operation to finish.

Why a furnace is not smelting
The item is not a furnace input
Many items have no regular-furnace recipe. Remove the item and check the in-game recipe book for a furnace result. Some recipes belong to a smoker, blast furnace, crafting table, or another block instead.
The fuel is in the wrong slot
Fuel must go in the lower slot. An item placed in the input slot will not power the furnace, even if that item is burnable.
The fuel is not accepted
Replace the questionable item with coal or charcoal. If those work, the original item was not a valid fuel in that edition or version, or its burn behavior differs from what you expected.
The output slot is full
Take the finished items from the right-hand slot. A full output slot prevents the furnace from completing additional operations because it has nowhere to place the result.
The furnace ran out of fuel
Smelting pauses when there is no remaining fuel. Add another valid fuel item. The unfinished input is not converted into a partial product.

You removed the input or broke the block
Putting the input back restores the operation. If the furnace was broken before completion, the cited guide states that the input remains unchanged rather than becoming a damaged or incomplete item.
The recipe differs by edition or version
Java and Bedrock can differ in recipe availability and fuel behavior, and changes can occur between game versions. Search the in-game recipe book in the world you are playing instead of relying on a list made for another edition.
Making furnace work less wasteful
Match fuel to the batch
Count the number of items before adding fuel. Coal and charcoal each cover eight regular-furnace operations, so a batch of eight is a simple match. For other fuels, use the item’s listed burn duration and avoid starting a long burn for only one or two items unless convenience matters more than efficiency.
Keep input, fuel, and output clear
Before starting a large batch, leave space in the output slot and have somewhere to move finished items. Removing output periodically prevents a full result slot from pausing the furnace.
Use the right specialized block
A regular furnace accepts general smelting and cooking recipes. A smoker is specialized for food, and a blast furnace is specialized for ores and nuggets. Both specialized blocks process their eligible categories faster, but they do not replace the regular furnace for every recipe.
Automating a furnace with hoppers
For continuous processing, the automation tutorial cited for this guide uses one furnace, three hoppers, and three chests. The hoppers move input, fuel, and output without requiring you to open the furnace for every item.
- Place the furnace where you can access it.
- Attach a hopper above the furnace and connect a chest to that hopper. This chest stores input items; the hopper feeds the furnace’s top slot.
- Attach a hopper to the furnace’s side and connect a second chest to it. This chest supplies fuel to the furnace’s bottom slot.
- Attach a hopper beneath the furnace and connect a third chest to it. This hopper pulls finished output from the furnace.
- Load the input chest, fuel chest, and then inspect the output chest as the furnace works.
Hopper orientation matters: each hopper must point toward the furnace or the chest it is meant to serve. Test the system with a small batch before filling all three chests. Automation does not change the furnace’s recipe rules or its normal 10-second-per-item timing; it simply moves items for you.

The speed distinction comes from the cited automation guide. Exact recipe eligibility can vary by edition and version, so use the recipe book to verify whether a particular item belongs in a smoker or blast furnace. Keep a regular furnace available for recipes those specialized blocks cannot handle.
Edition and version checks
- Identify the edition: the documented Microsoft recipe page is for Bedrock, while other cited guidance is general gameplay advice.
- Check the game version: recipe acceptance and fuel values can change.
- Use the recipe book: it reflects what the current world recognizes as craftable or smeltable.
- Verify alternatives: blackstone and deepslate furnace recipes are available only in applicable circumstances or versions.
If an online instruction conflicts with your game, trust the recipe book and the furnace interface in that specific world. Do not substitute a Java recipe list for a Bedrock world, or vice versa, without checking the version.
A dependable furnace workflow
- Craft one furnace from eight perimeter blocks, leaving the center empty.
- Place it near your storage or mining and cooking area.
- Sort the job: food, metal, stone, charcoal, or another known furnace recipe.
- Check the recipe book if the input is unfamiliar.
- Load the input above and coal or charcoal below.
- Keep the output slot clear and collect results after each batch.
- For repeated work, add the three-hopper, three-chest arrangement and test it with a small load.
- Move food to a smoker or ore and nugget work to a blast furnace when the faster specialized block accepts the recipe.
This arrangement gives you a general-purpose furnace for mixed tasks while preserving faster options for dedicated food or metal production.
